This invention relates to undergarments,

and more particularly to a form of undergarment having a more or less closely fittmg body or trunk portion with closed crotch, and enlarged loosely draped leg portions.

The objects of this invention include the provision of a durable improved undergarment, such as of the step m-chemlse type, of pleasing appearance, wh1ch will be comfortable and convenient in use, may be manufactured in quantitles at a low cost.

Further and more specific objects, features and advantages will more clearly appear upon reference to the following speclficat on taken in connection with the a ccompan mg drawings which serve to describe and 1 lustrate the invention in certam of its preferred embodiments.

Referring to the drawings, shown in Figs. 1 to 6 may comprise front and back body portions which may both be the garment of the general shape of the part 20' shown in Fig. 4. Two of these portions preferably are stitched as at 21 and 22 along the sides of the garment to form the trunk or body of the garment. The upper edlges may be suitably hemmed at 23 and sho der straps as at 24; may be attached thereto. If desired reinforcements as at 25 may be applied at'the armpits.

At these openings fiounces 29 and 30 comprising tubular leg portions are stitched. 29 and 30 may be brou ht together for forming the seam 36 (see ig. 2) at the side of the garment and in alignment with the side seam of the body portion. The flounce pieces may be cut with generally horizontal lower edges as at 37 so that if desired, in the finished garment the lower edges will extend uniformly down to a level approximately at the knees.

In this construction it will be noted that the body portion or trunk part of the garment, if desired may be made substantially form-fitting, whereas the enlarged hip and leg portions are uniformly and loosely draped. It has been found that provision of the straight cut leg openings on the body portion joined to the semi-circular cut edges of the fiounces makes this result posssible without the-use of patterns of complicated outline. Each of the patterns is made up of substantially straight lines and arcs of circles. .Accordingly, the'parts may be accurately and quickly cut by inexpensive labor. These advantages are also accompanied by an improved appearance in the garment since the body portions 20, together with the crotch piece 26, are joined to the fiounces in this simple manner substantially along theupper line of the hips, such line forming a continuous regular curve from front to back of the garment when worn. The body portion and crotch iece to retain the garment in normal position, yet the loosely draped leg portions permit free movement and, although of substantial length, may when necessary be drawn to one side, since the garment has a closed crotch.

In making the garment two body portions of corresponding size may be first stitched together along the sides, as at 21. The upper edges 23 may then be hemmed and the shoulder straps 24 and reinforcements 25 applied. The lower extremities 26 may then be stitched to the ends of the piece 26. The flounce pieces whlch have been cut as above described may have their

34 and 35 first stitched together to form the tubular leg portions and are then stitched at the leg openings in the body portion of the garment, care being taken-to allow the flounce pieces to be uniformly draped, thus permitting the leg portions to hang straight downwardly to a horlzontal line adjacent the knees.

Figures 1 through 6 illustrate the invention as applied to a full length garment. Reference will now be had to Figures 7 through 14 which illustrate the invention as embodied in a step-in garment extendin only up to the waistline.

n this designof garment the trunk portion comprisestwo side pieces or gores v38 and 39 stitched together at the center of the front of the garment as indicated at 40 and also stitched together at the center of the back of the garment for a short distance as indicated at 41 (see Fig. 9). The lower side edges of these gores are also stitched to a crotch piece 42 which extends to a point 43, a substantial distance up the back and also to a point 44, alesser distance up the front of the garment. Arcuate side edges as at 45, (see Fig. 9), are formed on the piece 42 corresponding to the arcuate edges 33 of the crotch iece 26 in the garment above described. ach of the

will be noted that the side edges 46 and 47 of this pattern are substantially straight and parallel except that at 48 the upper corner of the piece is cut at an angle for a substantial distance down the back of the garment. Two corresponding edges 48 on the

38 and 39 are stitched together to form the seam 41 above referred to. The cutting of this edge at the angle indicated permits this seam to be located substantially in alignment with the seams at the side of the point 43 on the crotch piece when the garment is worn, thus insuring a good fit without bulging or wrinkling of the parts joined at this area. 38 and 39 may be cut substantially straight to provide a straight waistline. The lower edges of the gores, however, are preferably cut away in the shape of a shallow straight sided V as indicated at 50 (see Fig. 11). The apex of the V is desi ed to be positioned at the sides of the ip portions of the garment. The upper edges of the gores may be suitably hemmed if desired as at 51 to enclose an elastic band in the conventional manner.

After the parts as thus far described are stitched together, upwardly diverging leg openings will result having substantiall straight out edges (except for the crotch piece) formed b the V out edges 50. These openings exten up the sides of the arments to points close to the waistline. Tieg portions as at 52 ma be provided which are of a shape genera ly similar to that of theflounces of the garment above described. A pattern for such a flounce is shown in Fig. 12. A segmental portion of the upper edge is cut away to provide an arcuate or semicircular attaching edge 53 corresponding to the

31 and 32 of the garment above described. Upwardly convergent side edges 54 and 55 are provided and are designed to be stitched together to form the tubular leg portions as will be readily understood. A generally horizontal lower edge 56 is formed on the flounce pieces so that in the finished garment the lower edges will extend uniformly down a substantial distance to approximately, knee height if desired. Figs. 7, 8 and 9 which show the garment as worn, will serve to best illustrate these horizontally cut lower edges.

The crotch piece as shown in Fig. 13 is preferably of double thickness or otherwise reinforced. In Fig. 14 a crotch piece 57 of a slightly modified form of construction is illustrated. In this form the front and middle portions of the piece are made of double thickness or reinforced as far as a seam 58, but from this seam on up the back of the garment a single thickness is used forming the pointed area 59. Ample reinforcement is thus provided in a simple manner without materially adding to the weight of the garment and without adding complications to the manufacturing process.

It will thus be seen that in a garment of this design just as in the full length type above described, the body or trunk portions may be made substantially form-fitting while the enlarged hip and leg portions are loosely uniformly-draped. The advantages above referred to of durability, comfort and convenience are therefore also available with this design.

While the invention has been described in detail with respect to certain particular preferred and satisfactory examples, it will be understood by those skilled in the art after understanding the invention that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and it is intended therefore in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications.

What is claimed as new and upon which it is desired to secure Letters Patent of the United States is: i

1. A combination undergarment comprising a substantially form fitting body portion with a closed crotch and leg openings diverging therefrom upwardly to points at the sides of the garment substantially at the waistline, and fiounces comprising enlarged leg portions of tubular form secured at said openings, each of said fiounces being when developed a substantially quadrilateral member but with one side cut away to provide a substantially semicircular edge for attachment at one of said leg openings, the two side edges next adjacent said semicircular ed e being stitched together along the side of the garment in forming the tubular leg portion.

2.. An undergarment comprising front and back body portions stitched together along the sides of the garment and secured at their lower ends by a reinforced crotch member, and substantially knee length enlarged closed hip and leg portions secured to said body portions and crotch member, said body portions having upwardly diverging substantially straight edges and said leg portions having when developed substantially semicircular concave ed es for joining said straight edges, whergby the body portions may be substantially formfitting while the enlarged hip and leg portions are uniformly and loosely draped.

3. The method of making a closed crotch undergarment which comprises stitching front and back body portions together along the sides of the garment, securing the lower ends of said portions to. a crotch piece, providing substantially quadrilateral pieces cut with upwardly converging side edges, cutting segments from the upper edges of said quadrilateral pieces to provide arcuate edges, securing said converging side edges together at the sides of the garment to form downwardly flared tubular leg portions,

and stitching said arcuate edges to the sides of the crotch piece and to said body portions with the flared leg portions uniformly draped.

4. A closed crotch undergarment comprising a body portion and leg portions of substantial length joined thereto, the body portion having upwardly diverging straight cut leg openings, the upper leg portions being cut away to provide arcuate concave edges joining said straight cut openings whereby the leg portions may be uniformly loosely draped while the body portion is closely conforming.

5. An undergarment comprising a body portion with a closed crotch and leg openings diverging therefrom upwardly to points at" the sides of the garment substantially at the waistline, and fiounces com rising enlarged leg portions of tubular orm secured at said openings, each of said fiounces being when developed a substantially quadrilateral member but with one side cut away to provide a substantially semicircular edge for attachment-at one of said leg openings, the two side edges next adjacent said semicircular edge being stitched together along the side of the garment in forming "the tubular leg portion.

6. An undergarment comprising two body portions stitched together along opposite sides of the garment and secured at their lower ends by an elongated crotch member having arcuate side edges, and enlarged closed hip and leg portions secured to said body portions and crotch member, said body portions having leg openings with upwardly diverging substantially straight edges and said leg portions having when developed substantially semicircular concave edes for joining said straight edges and the arcuate edges of said crotch piece, whereby the body portions may be substantially form-fitting while the enlarged hip and leg portions are uniformly and loosely draped.
