' Application filed September 30, ieeefis naluo;138,644;
The purpose of my invention is toprovide parts of my longitudinally extensible boom,
whereby the objects 'contemplated arerat tained, as hereinafter-more fully set ,forth,
pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in V the accompanying drawingsyin which: of a boom illustrating my'invention'. it 7 Figure 2 is'a detail, sectionalview taken on the line 2-2 of Figure lr t Figure 3 is a detail, sectional view taken" on the line 3' 3'of Figure 1;
Figure, tis a sectional view taken on theline Hlof Figure 1; and I a Figure 5 is a-sdetail, sectional viewtaken on the line 55 ofFigure 2. ff I My invention has todo with the provision of a longitudinally extensible boom, particularly adapted .for machines of the type in which the boom carrying ther'excavating machinery, such for instance, as endless, chains and buckets, is pivoted at the rear; end of the machine andjis designed to be lowered into the ditch or raised-fore the convenient transportation of the machine. 5 v
It is frequently desirablethat the length of such a boom bejvaried, and it is somewhat difficult to make; a longitudinally ex tensible boom, because ofthe difficulties of convenient adjustment and of securing proper rigidity when the adjustment has been made.
' It ismy purpose toprovide such a boom wherein such difficulties are eliminated. v
,used the reference character.A toindicate generally the upper sectionlof theqboom,
. which maybe mounted at its 'upper end in "any suitable ,way, preferably" by being oted on a shaft, not here ;sh'own'.
' The upper boom section A compriseslaterv ally, spaced,inwardlyopening channels, 10,
which may beheld in proper spacedfrelation at theirupper ends in any desiredand usual manner. 7 Y. 1
; T iese' channels are of such 7 Figure 1 is a sideelevation ofa portion.
, ports 15, shown in Fi I provide likewise a lower boom sectioliB.
' The lower boom. section B likewisecom- I j j size as-tolbe received within thee nnels 1Q, spaced vertically from the flanges'thereof.

er-endof these supports, later;
ally spaced plates 171 are fixed thereto on opposite sides of the lower end of -the upgtiresfland' 2,7 and per boom sectionil There is enoughresilfl 1 e-ncy 1n the supports to permit these plates enough to tightly grip the lower end of the.

Just below thejl'ower end of the upper boom section a similar boltand nut ,are provided. By tightening'tlie nuts 19 on the bolts 18 it will be seen'that the lower'jeud of the upi g per boom section A may be gripped between the plates.
Mounted on each o f the bolts an eye bolt 20, extending away from the bolts .18,

In a longitudinally, extensible boom,,a boom section comprised of laterally spaced members, a second boom section comprised ofsmaller laterallyspaced members, one'end of the second boom section being received in cured on the inside of the second boom section for holding its members properly spaced apart, a filler adjacent to the .end of the second boom section received between the members of the first boom section, means for detachably connecting said filler with the first boom section, adjustable means for connecting said first means and said filler together, means for gripping the members of said first boom section together and thus gripping between them the members of the second boom section, the members of said: first boom section comprising inwardly tion for holding its members vproperly V spaced apart, a fillerfreceived between the members of the, first boom section, adjustable means for connecting said first means and said filler together, meansfor gripping the members of said first boom section together and thus gripping between them the members of the second boom section.
