Patented May 24, 1927.
CLARENCE CU'N'DEY, OFJ'PH'ILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
- FIBER-HEAD srooL.
' Application filed May 8,
My invention relates to.spools used for windingteXtile threads as well as wires, and it relates more particularly to the type of spool used for high speed winding, having a hollow barrel of wood and fiber heads or flange of substantially the same diameter as the outside of the barrel. The body of the thimble was passed through a hole of the same diameter in the fiber head and was then driven and glued into'the barrel. In addition to this, a wooden peg was passed transversely through one wall of the barrel at each end, into the body of the thimble, to prevent the thimbles, and hence the spool heads, from working loose. V
This construction has the disadvantage in that when the heads do work loose in time, there is no means of tightening them, and when the bearing holes in the thimbles, or any other part of the spool wears, there is no practical way of replacing the worn part,
and the whole spool must thus be discarded.
The novel construction embodying my in vention eliminates the above disadvantages. by providing a thimble which is readily removable, thus permitting the replacement of the spool heads as well as the thimbles, and whereby any play between the barrel and the heads may be taken up by simply turning the thimble. My novel construction further provides a bearing hole which will have better wearing qualities, particularly when used at high speed, under which conditions a Wooden bearing will not stand up for any length of time.
With the above ends in View my novel fiber head spool consists of a hollow cylindrical barrel preferably of wood, having its bore threaded a certain distance at both ends, a
1924. Serial No. 711,758.
[my invention consists can be variously arranged and-organizedand-that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Fig. 1 represents a perspective View of the novel construction in spools embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the cylindrical barrel of my novel spool construction, having a concentric opening 2 ex tending longitudinally therethrough, and having the two ends thereof threaded as at 3. To the ends of the barrel I secure the two fiber heads 4 by means of the flanged thimbles 5 having their threaded body portions 6 turned into the ends of the barrel.
The flanges 7 are provided with a plurality of recesses 8 for the reception of the-prongs of a sprocket, wrench. the heads 4 from turning, I provide the pins 9 therethrough, driven into the bodyof the embodies the features of advantage enu-v merated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I havev in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention 'or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is: j
In a spool of the character stated, a tubular barrel having internal threads in the terminal portions of the bore thereof, a removable terminal fiber head at each end of said barrel having a central aperture in In order to prevent alignment With the bore of said barrel, locking pins passing through each of said fiber heads and into the terminals of said barrel, a metallic bearing thiinble at each end of said spool haidng an externally threaded tubular portion extending through the central aperture in the respective fiber head and extending into and threadedly engaging the internally threaded terminal portions of the bore of said barrel and having an external terminal flange formed integrally with the tubular portion of said thiinble overhanging and engaging the inner peripheral edge por- -tion of the respective fiber heads to clamp the same endwise to the barrel and overlapping and locking the outer terminals ot the respective pins, and a resilient washer interposed between each end of said barrel and the corresponding fiber head.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunder 20 signed my name.
