Description

. May 24, 1927.
R. s POTTER DOOR CLOSER Filed Oct. 27, 1926 Patented May 24, 1927.
UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. POTTER, OF GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT,
DOOR CLOSER.
Application filed October 27, 1926. Serial No. 144,574.
scribed, the novel features being particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view 01'' door closer having the invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the same; v
Figure 3 is a detail plan view of the adjusting plate;
Figure 4 is a detail elevation of the adfi justable clamping stud.-
In the drawing, I have shown at 1 a door closer of the type shown in the patent to Regan, No. 999,522, August 1, 1911, in which there is a double or reversible spring, and in which, when the lever or main arm 2 is moved to the right the spring is wound from the top and when the arm is moved to the left the spring is wound from the'bottom. W hen the door is released, the spring moves to the central position and pulls the door to the predetermined position. The lever or main arm 2 is secured on the upper end of the rotary spindle 3 to turn therewith and an adjusting plate l is fixed on the upper end of the spring-winder sleeve 5, as being formed with a central opening 6 having flat sides to fit over, the flat-sided upper extremity of the sleeve and rest upon shoulders at the lower ends of the flat faces as will be understood on reference to Figure 2. The plate 4 is circular with its periphery 7 overhanging its hub portion, as shown in Figure 2. Through the main arm orlever is formed an opening 8, a distance from the centre of the spindle 3 approximately equal to the radius oi the adjusting plate, and in said opening is received a stud or pin 9 having a circumferentially extending notch 10 near its lower end and having its upper end reduced and threaded, as shown at 11. The notch 10 is adapted to engage the edge of the plate 4 and the threaded end 11 projects above the lever to receive a securing nut 12 which may be turned home against the lever to secure the stud therein and it will be noted that when the nut is turned home, the notch in the stud will be brought into binding engagement with the adjusting plate or disk and the lever, consequently, secured in fixed relation to the plate. Thus, by adjusting the door and the lever to the desired position while the plate l and the spring are in central position, and then securing the nut 12 the device may be set to close the door to any desired angle. The closer is reversible and can he set to hold the door at any angle up to lVhen the booth is in use, thedoor can be pulled shut and latched. lVhen the patron leaves the booth, he will open the door and, when he releases it, the closer will close it to the pointdetermined by the adjustment of the lever. v
. Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
The combination with a door-closer including a spring-actuated spindle, and a spring-winder sleeve, of a lever carried by the spindle, a plate carried by the sleeve, a studniounted in the lever and having a notch engaging the edge of the plate. and
means for securing the stud and effecting binding engagement between the same and the plate.
In testimony whereof, I have signed-this specification.
. ROBERT S. ROTTER.
