WASHING MACHINE.
Appli'c-ationtfil ed m 18,1924. Serial No. 726,857.
This invention relates to washing machines for household laundry'work oi -the type in which a rotary fluid tight cylinder forms the vcontainer for the cleansing liquid as well as for thematerial to be cleansed,
the present invention being an, improvement upon the machine *disclosed in'my co-pending application Serial: No. 709,402, filed 'April28,1924-.
The application above referred to provides means for automatically relieving the cylinder of internal gas pressure during the operation thereof; this bemg accomplish-ed by means ofa pressure relief valve which i V liquids will at times therefrom. i I

Reference should be hadto the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Fig. lis a side elevation of a washingmachine embodying the 2 is e a fragmentary view showing an axial section through the relief the relief valve in ele- Referring to the accompanying drawings,
y the Washing machine consists of a suitable supporting frame 1 in which is mounted a horizontally disposed drum 2, which is supa "the inner side of the ported at'both ends in the .frameby means of trunnions 3 and 4:, the drum being operated through suitable gearing in the gear casing 5. The drum 2 is fluid tight and forms a container for the cleansing liquid and also for the articles being washed. On
drum a series of air trapping chambers are 1J-ributed that the chambers filled with water during passage through the liquid and completely discharge the with *air during cylindrical wall of the formed b arcuate perforated partition plates 6. The drum will be supplied with uid to andduring rotation of the drum the peripheral air chambers become filled with water, while passing through the liquid and discharge the water during their passage above the surface of the liquid. in the plates 6 are so proportioned and diswater and becomefilled their passage above the level of the liquid while their passage beneath the level of the liquid displaces the air, therein causing the air to ticles of clothing in the-liquid and during the of the liquid the streams of liquidare disare completely bubble up throughithe liquid and are The perforations v charged downwardly;from the, chamber-sf The currents of air rising from the air chambers through the liquid tend toforce the material in the liquid upwardly andthis upward 'movementyisv counteracted by the streams of water flm ing has attached thereto a valve casing 8 which opens to the interior of the drum, thevalve 8 being provided with a conical valve seat 9 so a by gravity-fronrthe I chambers above the surface of the liquid. 1 .th'e-liquid are thus upon its inner .end. i The casing i8 carries .a a
valve 10 which engagesthe seat 9 and closes the opening into the drum, the valve: 10 being tends the casing 8 which is provided with a gland 13 to prevent escape of liquid. The valve 10 valve is mounted is a cam 16,
provided withfa stem 11 which exthrough a boss 12 in the outer wall of i is interposed beforming a container for a body of the drum. The cam 16 serves to automatically open the valve during each revolution of the drum to allow escape of gases therefrom thereby preventing excessive pressure within the drum.
A drain pipe 17 is connected to the casing 8 outside the head of the drum and extends inwardly therefrom toward the axis of the drum, the inner discharge end 18 of the drain pipe 17 being bent out ardly from the head of the drum. The discharge end 18 of the drain pipe projects into an annular collecting member 19 which is fixed to the frame adjacent the head of the drum. The annular collecting member 19 is mounted in a vertical position and coaxially with respect to the axis of the drum. The collecting member 19 is formed with inner and outer oppositely facing channels 20 and 21 projecting inwardly toward the head of the drum, the inner annular channel 20 surrounding the trunnion therein and facing outwardly and the outer channel 21 being spaced outwardly from the inner channel 20 and facing in 'ardly. The spaced channel members 20 and 21 provide between them an annular opening into which the discharge end 18 of the drain pipe projects. Liquid discharged from the drain pipe 17 against the outer side of the collecting member or into the inner channel 20 and flows by gravity into the outer channel 21 which is wider than the inner channel 20. A drain pipe 22 extends from the lower portion of the collecting channel 21 and extends to adjacent the bottom of the frame 1 so that liquid deposited in the collecting member 19 may be discharged into a suitable collecting receptacle beneath the machine.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A washing machine having a rotatably mounted substantially fluid tight drum forming a container for a body of cleansing liquid and articles to be cleansed, a pressure relief valve carried by the drum, means for operating the valve during rotation of the drum to permit es tape of gases therefrom, and means associated with the valve for collecting any liquid escaping through the valve. e
2. A washing machine having a rotatably mounted substantially fluid tight drum of cleansing liquid and articles to be cleansed, a pressure relief valve carried by the drum, means for operating the valve during rotation of the drum to permit escape of gases from the interior thereof, a casing enclosing said valve upon the exterior of the drum, and means for draining liquid from said casing.
3. A washing machine having a rotatably mounted substantially fluid tight drum forming a container for a body of cleansing liquid and articles to be cleansed, a relief valve in an end wall of the drum, means for operating the valve during rotation of the drum to permit escape of gases therefrom, a casing enclosing said valve upon the exterior of the drum, a drain pipe connected to said chamber, and a stationary annular collecting member into which said drain pipe discharges.
l. A washing machine having a frame in which is rotatably mounted a substantially fluid tight drum forn'iing a container for a body of cleansing fluid and articles to he cleansed, said drum having a relief valve in an end wall thereof adapted to be opened to permit escape of gases therefrom, a casing enclosing the valve upon the outside of the drum, a drain pipe extending from said casing to ard the axis of the drum, and a stationary collecting chamber fixed to the casing coaxially with the drum, said collecting chamber having a central opening into which said drain pipe extends.
A washing machine having a frame in which is rotatably mounted a substantially fluid tight drum forming a container for a body of cleansing fluid and articles to he cleansed, said drum having a relief valve in an end wall thereof adapted to be opened to permit escape of gases from the drum, a casing enclosing said valve a drain pipe extending from said casing toward the axis of said drum, the inner outlet end of said pipe being bent outwardly from the drum, a collecting member fixed to the frame and having an annular inwardly facing outer channel and an annular outwardly facing channel within the outer channel between which channels the outlet end of the pipe extends. and a drain conduit connected to said fixed collecting member.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto signature.
a tlix my HARRY 1V. MITCHELL.
