LOUIS H. ZEUN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR- TO JOHN B ADT COMZPARY, OI BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
ELECTRICAL HEATING UNIT FOR DRYING APPARATUS.
Application filed March as, 1925. Serial m. 18,088.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in drying apparatus and is particularly analogous to that type of drying apparatus illustrated 1n co-pen'd- 5 ing application filed December 23, 1924, executed September 25, 1924, Serial No. 757
648, and assigned to the John B. Adt Company of Baltimore, recorded in liber L423,
page 124. It is the particular object of this invent on to provide the heating drum of the drylng apparatus with an integral heatlng unit that is rotatable with the drum and material carried in the drum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rotating material carrymg drum with a plurality of relatively spaced electrlc heating units secured to and formlng a part of the drum, so as to be rotatable therewith.
A further object of the inventlon 1s to provide a drying apparatus with a rotating material carrying drum having fixed thereto and rotatable therewith, a plurality of electric heating units, which heating units are so arranged on the interior of the drum as to radiate heat both to the interior of the drum and the housing surrounding the same.
A further object of this invention is to provide a drying apparatus for tobacco and like material, havlng a rotating heat ng drum carrying electrical heating units, which are of such construction as to render it possible to manufacture the apparatus at a comparatively small cost.
A still further and more important ob ect of this invention is the provision of a rotating drum for drying apparatus provlded with suitable electrical heating units carried by baflles on the interior of the drum.
Withthese and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described,
(5 pointed out in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectlonal view of the dryin apparatus, showin the rotating drum an relative position 0 the heating units as made in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the rotating drum and heating units, and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevatlonal view of the rotating heating drum, showing the air outlets.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a drum housing and this housing 5 supports a rotating drum 6. The housing 5 is identical in construction in every detail with that construction set forth in my co-pending application, Serial No. 757,648, filed December 23, 1924, and as the construc tion of my co-pending application and the present one is identical, and inasmuch as the ousing and the support for the drum forms no part of this invention, specific detail or mentioning of the same is omitted.
The particular invention embodied in this application is the provision of the rotating drum 6, which is provided on its interior with a plurality of relatively spaced sup porting elements 7. The supporting ele ments 7, as here shown, are substantially V- shaped and have the terminals of their open end portions secured to the interior circumference of the drum at regular spaced intervals, as at 8. Secured within these supports 7, are electrical heating units 9, and these units may be in as many series as desired, or if necessary, can be one complete unit for each support 7.
The supports 7 also constitute bafiles for the material which is placed in the rotating drum 6.
Secured between each suport 7, is an auxiliary support 10, which lias one end secured to the support 7 and its opposite end secured to the interior circumference of the drum 6, and each of these auxiliary supports 10 has secured thereto an electrical heating unit 11, of the same configuration as the heat unit 9. Y o
The drum 6 is provided with a series of air or heat openings 12, such opening 12 being located directly opposite each of the heating units 9 and 11, respectively, and the purpose of these openings 12 is to permit the heat to pass from the units into the housing 5 and circulate through the material carried thereby.
The particular-operation of this apparatus is identical with that in my co-pending application above referred to. The material is fed into a hopper at the end of the drum, which has been properly heated both int'eriorly and exte-riorly by the heating units 9 and 11, which are an integral part of the drum. The material sliding about the interior of the drum during its rotation, not only gets the benefit of the heat radiating from the baflies, or supports 7 and 10, but also receives the benefit of the additional heated air passing from the housing through the drum. Thus, the material is thoroughly dried due to the fact that there is a continuous inner heat flowing from the units and a continuous flow of dry air about the drum and through the drum from the housing, which will rapidly remove the enerated moisture, and the material is dlscharged from the drum in the manner explained in my co-pending a plication.
It is to be un erstood that the articular construction of the supports or ba es 7 and l. 10, is of no material consideration, the pre' ferred embodiment of this invention being the provision of electric heating units carried by the drum and rotating therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A drying apparatus including a housing, a rotatin drum mounted in said housing, a plurality of electrical heating units formed integral with the interior of said drum, and said drum provided with heat outlets opposite each of said electrical heating units.
2. A drying apparatus comprising a housing having a rotating drum mounted therein, a pluralit of relatively spaced supports formed on t e interior of said drum, and constituting bafiles, electrical heating units carried by each of said supports, and said drum having openings to permit heated air to pass into said housing and back into said drum.
3. A drying apparatus including the combination with a housing having a rotatin drum mounted therein, said drum provide with a lurality of openings at relatively spaced istances apart, and electrical heat units carried on the interior of said drum and located directly opposite each of said openings for the purpose specified.
In testimony w ereof he hereunto afiixes his signature.
LOUIS H. ZEUN.
