Each hollow post 'serves as a housing for the vertical swinging and support bar 10which passes longitudinally thereof from a point below the base '9 to within a short distance of the top of post 7. Bar 10 should be supported-for rotary and vertical reciproeating movement bybearings 12', rigidly carried 'by the walls of post 7, and a pair of suitable guide bearings 13 also'similarly' supportedto engage bar '10 adjacent the cam surfaces 14 formed by the spiral twists. 7 A gate member '16 is supported by each bar 10 and should be constructed to present an upper and a lower portion 17 and 18 respectively which are ofa size suitable to pass through the'slots 19 formed inthe side of each post 7 Slots 19 extend a, quarter way around the post 7 and angle downwardly to'allow free turning and lowering slightly of the gate member'16 when bar 10 is moved vertically. The gate member 16 swings open only when bar is pulled down. This is accomplished in an automatic manner by recessing floor 8 as shown in Fig. 2, joining the lower ends of each bar 10 by a link 2( and causing a depressible platform 21. to rest thereon after the platform has been hinged as at 22 to the floor 8 and along one of its sides. 1C i Any suitable bearing 23 such as the wellknown thrust bearing may be used to interconnect bars 10 and link 20 so that when link 20 is exerting a downward pressure, the same may rotate when cam surfaces 1 1 engage opening in bearing 13. Obviously, platform 21 is caused to exert the downward pressure on link when a person steps upon it preparatory to. entering the gate. It may be desirable. to include a counting mechanism 2 1 to record thenumber of persons passing through the gate. This mechanism may be of the ordinary type, supported by one of posts .7, ed to the gate member through a rod 25 which has a squared end adapted to fit into squared socket 26 of gate member 16. This construction permits the gate to raise and lower therequired distance during the turning, yet operate mechanism 24.

This retrieving construction may be varied if desired.
7 Having thus described theinvention, and reserving the right to make all such modifications and changes as might fairly fall withinthe scope of the appended claims, what is claimed. and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gate of the character described a pair of spaced apart tubular posts, means correspond .to

Ina gate of the character described a pair of spaced apart hollow posts, means housed by each post for swingingly support ing a gate member and means for operating said swinging means, said swinging means including a vertically movable member having cam surfaces and moved vertically, the respective gate memher is caused toswing to the open or closed position, said vertically movable" member being a bar, rectangular in cross section and formingsaid cam surfaces by being: twisted to form a spiral. i
3. In a pair of. spaced apart hollow posts, means housed by each post for swingingly supporting a gate member and means for operating said swingingfmeans, including a vertically movable rectangular bar having a plurality of cam surfaces en gaging bearings integral with said [post whereby upon its being disposed vertically, the respective gate member is caused to swing on a horizontal plane to the open or closed position, said cam surfaces being formed by the twisting of said rectangular bar .to form spirals therein.
4. In an automatic gate of the character described, a pair of hollow posts, means housed jby'each post for swingingly supporting a gate member and means formed by said swinging and supporting meansfor receiving theoperating arm of a counting mechanism, said means comprising a squared socket adapted to receive the squared end of arecording mechanism rod, the depthof said socket being sufiicient. to permit raising and lowering of the gate as it is being swung.
