From the above description it will he apparent that by unlocking` the loeltr 35 and lifting it upwardly. the part 2S ot the hasp can be used as a handle tor rotatingthe pivot-meniber 23, and that the movement of the hasp is communicated to the hook lockinganember 25V in such manner that when the hasp is moved. in one direction this member is unlocked trom the stud 38, and that when moved in the opposite direction it is locked to this stud.
One end oi a link 40 i. pivotally connected with the inner end of the hook locking-element 25g as shown at 41. and the other end ot the link 40 is pivotally connected. with one arm ot the bell crank lever 42, as shown at 43. This hell crank lever is pivotally .mounted upon the inner tace ot the top wall 7 of section h as shown at 114. and the other end of the bell cranltlever 42 is pivotally connected with the sheet metal link 45.. as shown at 46. The oppositie end ot the link 45 is pivotally connected with one end ot the bell crank lever 47 that is similar in shape to the bell crank lever ft2 and pivoted to the inner tace of the trent wall ot section A. as shown at. 48. This pivotal connection is shown at L19. The other end ot the bell crank lever 1T is pivotally connected with the locking-bar as shown at 50.
From the above'description it will be apparent that when the pivot-member 23 is rotated in one direction by means of the hasp 28, the stud 21 will be :forced into the slot 15 of the locking-bar 14 and drawn up to the position shown in Figure 1, thereby sew curely locking both sections together. Upon reverse rotation ot the pivot-member 23 the stud` 21 will be forced downwardly to a position that will release it trom the li'ickin bar 14 so that the two sections can inc opened. It will further be evidenti 'from a consideration ot the shape ot the slot V15, that when the stud 21 is moved upwardly in this slot .it engages the upper inclined edge ot the slot and tends to pull the two sec-tunis ot' the trunk together. It will also be apparent that when the stud 21 is moved downwardly it will engage the opposite side of the slot 'l5 and tend to push the two sections ot the trunk to an open position. .lt will also be apparent that by openingr the top wall oit section B. the locking-bar 111 can be drawn back into the trunk` where it will be out ot' the way. A balance strip 51. secured to seo tion A, and dowels carry all stresses when the trunk is locked (except simple tension) and additionaly tend to hold the top wall ot section B in locked position.
Frein the above description it will be ap*- par-ent that I have provided a trunk con-- struction in which two locking devices, or elements, are carried by walls extending at an angle to cach other but which can be operated by a single element carried by one of said walls. It will also he aiiparent that by placing) the lock and the means 'tor artuatincY the locking' mechanism on the lop wall of the trunk7 I have `made them easiliVY accessible and operable. l.
