IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-DOOR HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,958, dated May 4, 1875; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ABsALoM S. SrroN'rz,
of Quincy, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fastening the Doors of Stoves, of which the following is a specification: Y
My invention relates to devices for fastening the doors of stoves, and analogous purposes.
Heretofore the key and latch have been made in two parts, one of them 4usually being of malleable iron, to which the other has been fastened by a rivet or otherwise; or the key has been cast with a bolt, and secured to the latch by means of' a nut.
My invention consists in constructing a key composed of a handle and latch, made in one piece, and operating in combination with a boss composed of two pieces, properly attached to the stove-door adjacent the key; one part, H, being cast with the door, the other partfbeing afterward riveted to the door in the proper place.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view showing the construction of the boss and latch. Fig. 2 is a detached View of the boss. Fig. 3 is a view of the combined latch and key, with the boss and other parts in section.
A is the key, and B the latch, which are cast, or otherwise formed in a single piece, and constructed to operate in a manner analogous to an ordinary key and latch.
1n the present instance the circular shoulders a b are provided, and the extremity of the latch rounded away, and other parts arranged as clearly shown in the drawings.
O is theboss upon the interior surface of the January 2S, 1875.
door D, which is in two parts, the part E being removable, and fastened in place by the screw e, or by a rivet or otherwise, and the part H cast with the door, or secured thereto in any other manner.
The parts of the boss may be provided with corresponding flanges, as shown at Fig. 2, to prevent their dislocation.
The aperture in the door and boss is of such size that when the rpart E is removed the latch B may be passed through it, and when the device is inserted, and the part E fastened in place, the form er will be appropriately held, so
las to fully effect its object.
It is manifest that the invention may be practiced in numerous ways other than that above set forth.
I do not, therefore, confine myself' to any particular means of arranging the boss, or the aperture in the door in which the shank of the latch turns, as any method whereby the latch may be inserted through an aperture in the door, and then secured to turn, is within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is- The key composed of the handle A and latch B, made in one piece, and operating in combination with the boss composed of the parts E and H, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in devices for fastening the doors of stoves, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22d day of January, 1875.
