With the'foregoing and. other objects in view which \wil1 appear more fully as the `des criptionl proceeds, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement or co-operating elements as hereinafter lmore specifically set forth, claimed and shown in -the accompanying drawings formlnga part of the present application, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevation illustrating a direction indicator constructed in accordance with an acceptable embodiment of my present invention, mounted upon the windshield of a. motor vehicle.

A rack 21 is formed in the rod 12, so that the rod, 12 may be forced outwardly to extended position, as hereinafter described. A hollow arrowhead 23 is positioned on `the outer endV ofthe rod 12. A pair of flexible side members 1s spring 24 are secured at their outer ends on lthe flat sides ofthe hollow arrowhead 23, while their inner ends are mounted upon spring rollers 25 within the casing 13.

l The rollers 25 are hollow and have springs 28 provided therein encircling the roller shafts 29. One end of the spring in each hollow roller 28 is f connected thereto, while the other end of' the spring is connected to the shaft 29. Each said roller shaft has a squaredend 30 and the roller shafts 29 are mounted in the casing 13 on opposite sides to prevent rotation of the said roller shafts. It is, therefore, evident that when the "flexible side members 24 are drawn outwardly during the outward movement of the rod 12, the springs 28 are wound up and serve to rewind said flexible side members 24 on the rollers 25 as the rod 12.is receded into the casing 13.
A pair of lamps 31 are carried on the transverse support. 32 and the casing 13. rIhe lamps 31 are surrounded by a reflector 33 having its open end directed towards the opening 13a, the reflector being carried on the support 32. If desired, the hollow arrow head 23 maybe made to form a like reflector adapted to oppose the reflector 33 to deflect the light against said flexible side members for illuminating purposes. Illumination of the Vflexible side members 24 occurs whenever a circuit is completed through the lamps 31, which are connected with the circuit wires 34 extending to the electric mo-` tor 35. The motor 35 is mounted in the casing so that the shaft 41 is parallel with the rollers 25. A gear 42 is positioned on thev shaft 41 of the motor 35 and meshes with and drives thegear 43 rotatably mount- 44. The gear 43 meshes with and drives the gear 45 which is loosely mounted on the roller shaft 29 of one of the rollers 25, and meshes with and drives gear 46 lsecured to shaft 47. Said shaft is rotatably carried in a support 48 extending at right-angles from the transverse bar 32.( The shaft 47has a spiral threaded portion When the motor 35 is energized, shaft 47 is driven through the gear mechanism described, and the pinion 50 is forced along the spiral thread 49 on said shaft 47 into engagement with the'. rack 21 `on the rod 12 and extends said rod outwardly together with the hollow arrow head 23 to which. the exible side members 24 are connected.y
When the circuit to the motor is broken, the spring 20 tensions the rod 12 inwardly and the springs 28 of the rollers 25 serve to rotate the shafts 29 of said rollers and ing, adapted wind the flexible side members'24 thereon.
As the rod 12'is receded, the pinion 5() is moved axially on the spiral threaded portion 49 of the shaft 47 untilthe same disengages the rod 12. f
While the preferred embodiment o the invention has been described it is ,to be understood that minor changes in the details ofconstruction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. V l
Vhat I claim as new is:
1. A direction indicator of the character vdescribe-d including, in combination, an electric motor; arod, provided with an arrowhead, geared to saidmotor adapted to be extended thereby; flexible side members adapted in connection with said arrowhead to form an indicating arrow, and. adapted upon Yactuation of said rod, to extend and recede therewith; spring -to which said flexible members are connected and means for disengaging said indicating arrow mechanism from said electric motor when the same is receded from its full extended position.
2. A direction indicator of the character described including, in combination, an electric motor; a casing; a rod carrying an arrowhead, extendible "from said casing; flexible members connected to said arrowhead adapted to form an indicating arrow in connecton therewith; spring tensioned rollerswithin said casing to which said ilexible members are connected; means for co operating said motor with said indicating arrow mechanism to extend the same from said casing when said motor is energized; and means for receding saidV indicating mechanism after the same has extended a predetermined distance `from said casing and the current to said motor is broken.
3. A direction indicator of the character described including, in combination, acasing; an electric motor positioned in said casing; a rod provided with a rack gear, extending throu h said casing; a drive pinion geared to said motor, mounted upon a shaft having a spiral thread so that said pinion is receded from sa'd rack gear when said rod is receded into said casing; a coil spring for returning said rod from tion; an arrowhead on said rod; flexible side members connected to said arrowhead, wound upon rollers positioned in said casto move with said rod and arrowhead to form an indicating arrow in connection therewith.
