As shown in Fig. 4, where there is no cross-piece, the arm portions 27 and 28 may be left off.
The upwardly extending portion ofthe connecting member may or may not be flanged on the outside edges, as at 29, to overlap the side faces of the post 20, as desired.
Instead of providing the special nutvmember 25, vnut pockets 30 may be formed out of sheet metalto` receive and hold ordinary nuts 31,and these pocketmeinbers with the nutsthereinvmay be welded within the channel oftlie connecting member` to hold the nuts' in `position for engagement by bolts 22.
' In the above manner an inexpensive post connection is secured, and a connection which permits ready and easy attachment and detachment of a post, and which is adapted to hold a post rigidly and firmly against loosening or displacement.
4 Preferably thesections l8 and 9 comprise sheet metal stampings, but, if desired, they may be forgings or castings.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and asmany apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scopethereof, it is intendedthat all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.`

A post connecting member of the character described, comprising two complementary sect1ons,.each having post engaging wall portions, and having adjacent inwardly directed portions forming an exterior recess between said wall portions, said sections having at said recess overlapping portions secured together, and bolt engaging means in said recess. i

A post connecting member of the character described, comprising two compleinentary sections, each having post engaging wall portions, and having adjacent inwardly dii'ected portions forming an exterior recess between said wall portions, said sections having at said recess overlapping, portions sey cured togetherbolt engaging means in said recess, and a bolt penetrating said overlapping portions and engaging with said bolty engaging means. f

A post connecting member of the character described, comprising two complementary sections, each having post engaging wall portions, and havingadjacent inwardly'di-` rected portions forming an exterior recess between said wall portions, said sections having at'said recess overlapping portions secured together, a post recessed to receive said inwardly directed portion and fitting `against the post engaging portion of the-connecting Y member, and bolts extending through the post and engaging said means, for securing the post tightly to the post engaging portion of the connecting member.

The combination with a hollow sheet metal sill having inner and outerfwall portions,of a post connecting member comprising two complementary sections, each including wingsv yabutting and secured to the interior surfaces of the inner and outer lsill walls,l and each, including a post engaging wall -portion extending'above the outer sill wall, said post engaging portions having adjacent inwardly-depressed portions overlapping each other and forming anV exterior recess between the wall portions, a post recessed to fitr around said depressed portions and seating ,against the inside of said post engaging wall portions, and bolts-penetrating said post and overlapping portions and i ALBERT L.
