Description

B. H. DYE.
CORINCT DEVICE May 17, 1927.
Paiemed v.May 1 7, 1927.
UNITED STATES Borna H. DYE, or '.rIPToN, cALIFonNIA.
` cosine DEVICE.
Application filedA December 9, 1926. Serial No. 153,636.
This inventionv relates to coring devices and more particularly to a device forrelieving pressure within the core barrel proper.
lt is well known to those familiar with the 5 art in rotary well drilling apparatus the drill is ope-rated with a water circulation under considerable pressure. kThe bottomv vof the well is accordingly filled witlrmuddy water i and when the vordinary drill is ,withdrawn for substitution by a core drill, this. mud has a chance to settle,` with the result that there f is a considerablelayer thereof atthe bottom of the well.- As the core drill is lowered intp thevwell, this mud enters the lower ,end of the core barrel and if a complete core, the full lengthof the core barrel. is to be taken. it is necessary that this mudbe permitted to escape therefrom. T o thiseiid, the upper ends of the core barrel have b eeufprovid'ed with outlet openings for lnud andywater and with' check valves controlling. such openings, but these devices are all unsatisfactory in that either they core is subjected to the water pressure or the check valve is held against its feat by the waterpressure, so that the resistance causes the core. to' packandprevents a full core being taken-Accordingly, an imi portant object of this invention'is to provide an outlet' for the mud and water. which enter the core barrel. as it is lowered into the well, which will notbe subjected to the water pressurev Y A further 'ohjc-cto'f the invention is to provide al device oflfthis character such that the current produced by Athe circulation waterv not only prevented from exertingr its pressiurc against a' check valve cont-rolling' the outlet, but is likewise caused to exert a suction uponvthis outlet, with the result that all pressure on the valve is relieved and the `mud and water may readily leave the core barrel. Those 'and other objects l. attain'by the construction shown in the accon'ipanyimtfv drawings, whereinfor the'purpose of illusiiiore' particularly --to the tration is shown a'preferred.enibodinient'of fof the sleeve.
In t-he preferred construction, the check thereof to receivea core formedby-the drill upon the ylower end of the' drill pipe (not shown). In accordance with-my invention, I provide a hollow member 12, the upper 50 end 13 of which is closed and the lower end of which has a central aperture 14 adapted for connection with the upper end of the 'core barrel.A Associated with this' central l aperture 1s a check 15 and seat 16 therefor 65 which act to prevent circulation water from entering the upper end of the barrel. v
Communicating with the hollow body ad` jacent the upper end thereof and diverging 'downwardly from this vhollow body are a 70 pair ofi outlets 17, the lower ends oftwhich preferably project slightly below the lower surface of the hollow body,v as indicated. Associated with this hollow body is an outer sleeve 18 having at its lower end downward- 75 ly directed outlets 19. The sleeve 18 has approximately the same' outsideV diameter as the inside diameter of the drill pipe, so that circulation water forced downwardl through the drill pipe will enter throu '30 mit mud and water. contained inthe core 9U barrel 11 to pass through the opening of the seat 1'6. A f A To assist' in 'directing the water passing through the sleeve 18 downwardly, through A the outlets19 of the sleeve, Vthe sleeve at 95 'its lower end is provided with aibottom 20 through which the outlets open and the exterior face of the yhollow body 12 at 'op posite sides thereof is provided vwith'p irs of Vdownwardly diverging ribs 21, the. outer 100 yedges. 'of which come into close proximity 'to thewalls of the sleeve 18 kand the'lowerj ends of'which extend into close proximity y .to the upper face of the vbottom wall'2Q,
valve seat 16 is carriedby the u per end of ,a nipple 22,fwhich serves. wit a swedge 23', as a means for'connecting the. hollow body to.the` upper end of the core barrel and 110 this nipple is threaded through' a ,central aperture 2 4 formed in the bottom wall 2O i having` an open top and self to rsuch speciiic structure except vas hereinafter claimed.
I'elai1n:-
1. n combination with a core barrel of rotary welll drilling apparatus, a hollow body having a closed upper end, vsaid hollow tbody beingin communication with and supported 'from the upper end of the core barrel, a check valve for controllingv communication between the hollowb'ody and the core barrel, downwardly :directed outlets for the hollow body communicating with the hollow'body above theseat Jfor the check valve and a sleeve surroundin;- the hollow body 'downwardly directed outlets at its lower end, the outlets -of the hollowbody aligning with the Outlets 0f the sleeve. u
2. In combination with a core'barrel of rotary wellrlrilling apparatus. a hollow body having a closed upper end, said hollowbod'y being. in communication with and supported 'from the upper end of the core' barrel, va check valve forv controlling eommunieation betweenvthe hollow body and the eore barrel, downwardly directed outlets for .the hollow-'bodyv communicating with the hollow body above the seat for the cheek valve'and `a'sleeve surrounding the hollow body y directed outlets at its lower end, the outlets having: an open'` top and downwardly of the hollow 4body aligning with the outlets of. the sleeve and extending thereinto.
3. In ycombination with a'core'barrel o1 rotary ywell drilling apparatus, va hollow body having! a closed upper end, said hollow body-being in. communication with andsupported from the upper end of the-core bary rel` a icheck valvefor controlling communication between the hollow body' and the core barrel, downwardly directed outlets for the hollow' body communicating with the hollow body above the seat tor 'the cheek valve,
al sleeve surrounding 'the hollow body havy' ino:r an open top and downwardly directed outlets at its lower end. the outlets of the hollow body aligning with the outlets of the sleeve and means associated with the hollow body and sleeve for directing fluid passing downwardly through th'eislceve to said outlet. f i y In testimony wher'eo-f'l hereuntoatx my signature. y y, v e BOYDE H.
