DOOR BUMPER.
Application filed March 11, 1926. Serial No. 94,078.
, My present inventionv has relation to bumpers for doors and the like; and it contemplates the provision of a door bumper which while simple and inexpensive 1n construction, is susceptible of being applied in different positions so as to operate to the best advantage, and in proportlon to itssize is possessed of large capaclty' 1n absorbing shockand jarwhen a door is violently thrown open.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following descri tion and claims *when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of thlS speclficatlon, 1n wh1ch:-
Figure 1 is a view showing the bumper constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant, as properly applied relative to a door and to a base board or wash board or other'part of the wall of an a artment.

I show in Figure 1 a portion of a swingable door 1, and I alsoshow in'Figure 1 the support 2 which my novel bumper is attached, the saidl support '2 being, within ."the purview of myinvention, a base board to bear against a base board, wash board or the like with a View to contributing to the strength and utility of the connection of the novel bumper to'the base board, wash board or the like.
In addition to the base 3, the novel bumper comprises a semi-globular body 7 of brass or other appropriate material, the said body 7 being provided with a central threaded aperture -8. Threaded in the said aperture or bore 8 of the body 7 is a threaded pin 9,
provided with a wood screw portion 10- and also prov ded with a collar 11, the latter being des gned to rest at the opposite side rangement of the .pin 9 in the slot 6 of the of the wall of the socket .4 with reference to the body 7. Adjacent to its outer end the pin 9 is provided with a diametrical aperture for the reception of a pin 10 through the medium of which .the casing member 12 of my-improvement is strongly connected to the body 7 and the pin 9. The said casing memher 12 receives a reduced portion 13 of the body 7 which construction is advantageous inasmuch as it contributes to the strength of the connection between the casing member, 12 and the body 7. The outer portion of the casing-member 12 is reduced as'designated by 14 to afford an internal abutment 15, which abutment is opposed to a flange 16 at the inner end of a tubular member 17 telescopically arranged in the casing member 12 and-capable of free rectilinear movement therein. A plug 18 is secured in the outer end of the tubular member 17, and a pad 19,-of rubber, or other appropriate material, is connected to the said plug 18 through the medium of a screw 20 the head or enlargement of which is embedded in and secured to the pad 19 at the time of manufacture.
Housed in the casing member 12 and the tubular member 17 and interposed between the body 7 and the plug 18 is an expansion spring 21, the function of which is to cushion the blow and absorb shock and jarwhen the door 1 brings up against the pad 19. Manifestly when the door 1 is impelled against the pad 19, the spring 21 will be compressed, andwill function in the manner and for the purpose indicated, and when the pad 19 is relieved of pressure, the said spring 21 will expand and restore the tubular member 17 and its appurtenances to the position illustrated in Figure 1 relative to the casing member 12 and the body 7. g
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in operation my novel bumper will prevent injury to the door and the apartment or other wall adjacent to the openin controlled by the door; and it will also be appreciated that my novel bumper is susceptible of ready application and is well adapted in general to withstand the usage to which devices of corresponding character are ordinarily subjected. In this latter connection it will be appreciated that by virtue of the capacity of adjustment due to the arbase 3, the cushioning portion of the bumper may be positioned so that the movement of the tubular member 17 by the door and against the action of the spring 21 will be in alinement with the point at which the bumper is attached to the base board or wall I board.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the elements embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of the said embodiment. I donot desire, however, to be understood "as limiting myself to the precise structure and arrangement of parts as disclosed, myinvention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which structural changes and changes in arrangement may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire-to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a door bumper and in combination, a base having a rounded socket and a slot in the wall of said socket and also having a marginal flan e, a semi-globular body disposed in said socl xet of the base and having a threaded aperture and also having a diametrical aperture intersecting said threaded aperture, a threaded pin disposed in said threaded aperture of the body and having a diametrical aperture in coincidence with the diametrical aperture of the body and also having a collar arranged at the opposite side of the wall of the socket in the base with reference to the semi-globular body and further having a wooden screw portion, a casing member surrounding the outer reduced portion of the body andhaving an internal shoulder at an intermediate point in its length, a diametrical-pin extending through and connecting the said casing member, the body, and the threaded pin in the body, a tubular member telescopically arranged in the casing member and having a flange at its inner end to bring up against said internal shoulder of the casing member, a pad carried by said tubular member, and a spring of expansion type housed in the casing member and the tubular member and interposed between the outer portion of the latter and the'body.
2. In a door bumper and in combination, a base having a rounded socket and a slot in the wall of said socket and also having a marginal flange, a semi-globular body dis posed in said socket of the base and having a threaded aperture and also having a diametrlcal aperture intersecting said threaded aperture, a threaded pin disposed in said threaded aperture of the body and having a d ametrical aperture in coincidence with the dlametrical aperture of the body and also having a-collar arranged at the opposite side ofthe wall of the socket in the base with reference to the semi-globular body and further having a wooden screw portion, a casin ,melnber surrounding the outer re duced internal shoulder at an intermediate point in its length, a diametrical pin extending through and connecting the said casing memher, the body, -and the threaded pin in the body, a tubular member telescopically arranged in the casing member and having a flange at its inner end to bring up againstsaid internal shoulder of the casing member, a pad carried by said tubular member, and a 'sprlng of expansion type housed in the case ingmember and the tubular member and interposed between the outer portion of the latter and the body; the said tubular member having a plug fixed in its outer end, and the said pad being opposed to said plug and being provided with a screw threaded 1n the plug and having an enlargement embedded in the pad.
3. In a door bumper and in combination, a base having a semi-globular socket and also having a slot in the wall of said socket, a portion having a spring-backed pad and also having a rounded end disposed in said socket of the base, and a pin connecting said portion and base and adjustably fixing the former to the latter and having means adapted to be secured to a support.
4. In a door bumper and in combination,
a base'having a semi-globular socket and a slot in the wall of said socket, and a cush- 'ioning portion having a rounded end disposed in said socket and also having a pin extending through and adjustable in the slot of the base and terminating in. a wooden screw portion. y
