lippiimmkaml ma January. aa,v 192s. serialv 1rasaam My invention. relates to a new and useful warning signal especially useful when employed with -a devlce known as a choker, the function of which is to temporarily choke the air admission port of a gasoline carbureter so that a heavily charged gasl mixture will b e produced at the outset for starting a cold'engine. Practically all carbureters are eiuipped with such choking devices, the hand e operating portion being usually mounted on an instrumentboard within sight and easyaccess of the operator or driver. Just as soon as the engine is running properly, the chokershould be thrown oli` so as to permit the carbureter to .operate normally,
Y otherwise an abnormal amount of gasoline toforget to move his choker handle"to thev olf position after thehengineis runnmgv will be drawn into the engine which will be only partially consumed', and which will condense on the walls of the cylinders and flow down into the crank case cutting the lubrication on its way, and improperly thinning the oil supply in the base. It is a matter of -common occurrence for an operator properly, with the result that frequently engines are run for long distances before the error is detected and corrected.
By my invention I- provide .a signal which warns the operator as long as the choker remains on, which ysignal is so cons icuous that lit cannot be overlooked, with t e result that the operator will be constantly reminded to promptly move the choker handle to the oft position and thereb avoid diluting the engine oil. In the drawin 1 represents a part of an instrument boar of a vehicle, such as an automobile or boat, which board may be made of metal. 2 Ais a bushing mounted on the board 1, the latter being usually perforatedl to permit the bushlngs to be inserted. 3 is a flange on the outer end of the bushing varranged to bear against the face of the board 1. 4 isa nut which screws onto the bushing 2 and which operates to clamp the 'bushing tightly to the board 1. 5 is a handle by which the choker may be operated. In the particular form shown the handle is of the fpush and pull type. 6 is a hollow stem which carries the handle 5 at its outer end and which projects through the bushing 2. The rear end of this stem is provided with a connection 7 which may lead toa choker conventionally .indicated at 8, such devices being well understood. 9 is a head on the stem 6 toward the rear end thereof., This head is preferably made of insulating material so that a contact ring 10 may be secured to the periphery thereof. 11 is a signal which in this instance is in the form of a lamp mounted in an ordinary lamp socket in the head 9. 12 is alass cover or bulls eye at the outer end o the handle through which the light from the lamp may shine when the current is on. The lamp bulb, or glass cover, i's preferably made in some striking color, such as red, to more readily attract attention." 14 is an electrical connection leading from one terminal of the lamp through the stem 6 and head 9, to the contact ring 10, with which it may be connected in a suitable way. In this instance, this terminal is designed to coact with the usual center terminal of the lamp. 15 is an insulatin Vblock mounted on the bushing 2. 16 is alade spring contact carried by the insulating block 15 and standing in the path of movement of the contact rin 10 so as to be in electrical contact therewit when the `choker handle is ulled out to throw the choker on. It wil benoted that when the choker handle is pushed in and the choker is' off, the contact ring 10 and the contact 16 will be electrically disconnected, but so long as the' choker handle is out to,any appreciable degree, electrical connection between these parts is made and the signal will be on. 17 is a suitable electrical connection leading from the contact 16 to a battery 18. 19 is a connection from the battery 18 to the board 1, which is in ofthe lamp 11 so that when the ring 10 and blade 16 are electricall connected, current will ow through the amp lilament so 'electrical contact with the other terminal as to cause a glow that will warn the operaior that the choker is on and requires his attention.
As indicated at the outset, I have shown ni v invention in one preferred and Successiul form only, and I Wish it understood that I well appreciate that a mechanic skilled in this art may make many modifications and changes without avoiding the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A warning signal for a choker operating device for a gasoline carbureter comprising, a movable rod to operate a choker, a support therefor, a` handle for said rod, an electric signal in front of said support, a signal circuit controller' at the rear of said support, and operable by the movement of said rod to cause the signal to go on when said rod is in one position, `and to cause said signal to go off747 when in another position. 2. A warning signal for a choker operating device for gasoline carbureters, comprising a bearing, a hollow rod extending therethrough and slidable therein, a handle on the other portion of said rod, an electric signal lamp carried thereby, an electrical contact on the inner portion of said rod and insulated therefrom, an electrical connection between said signal lamp and said contact, said connection extending through said hollow rod and being insulated therefrom, and another contact for cooperation with the irst mentioned contact to put said signal in and out-of circuit according to the losition of said handle.
