MUSICAL APPLIANCE.

rthe invention relates to a musical appliance consi.. ing in a device tor using a synoptical table indicating scales, arpeggios and other exercises. The said device comprises a easing externally bearing said table, and internally containing rotatable discs with the particulars ci? musi :al exercises to be seen tlirough openings in the table, furthermore a double slide with indicator' serving to point out vthe indications wanted.

The invention is illustrated by waT ot example in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l shows an elevation ot' the device;

On the baclr of the device around pivots LLEI-QH-Qm rotatable discs /l-5-67 are placed within corresponding recesses as illustrated in Figs. 5-7. The front wall ot the casing is provided with openings 12- -l--i.fl-l5 and protected by a glass. The glass iframe 9 serves as a bearing and guide i'ci.' a slide with a longitudinally running index l() within which a second slide is transversally movable.

The discs may be turned from the top side ci? the table or 'from the bottom side either from without where they project (Fig. l) or 'from the tront side by means ol gears, as illustrated in Fig'. Snail oit them bearing besides the word stop the 'following legends:

On the iront tace -8-A there are traced two or tour musical stalls in violin, bass clef, and so on. 'l1 he number of staffa-as the specilication of the clef relating to the exercises on the discs-is variable according to the musical instrument played on.

The musical statis are divided in sixteen fields of equal length and in each iield there are progressively specified the single Sharps and flats with the notes of the corresponding` tonalities, the major tones being in the upper part, and the minor tones in the lower ypart of the table.

In the intern'iediate space ot the table between the openings there is the legend of the exercise to be performed namely: scale with the distance ot tone of arpeggio on the accord ot tone ot j the asterisk indicating the note and tone to which the index has to be moved.

The device according to invention may be constructed as an integral part of the piano, as shown in Fig. 6, or is connected tothe piano7 as illustrated in adb-0, Fig. l0. Then constructed for singing, or for other musical instruments than pianos, the device will be united to the music stand7 as shown in Fig. ll.

The device may be oi Celluloid, ebonite, aluminium, mother o pearl, ivory and the like, or in metal or any convenient material or composition.

Working of the clcece.

F or the performance ot the scales the index l has to be moved and stopped on a division of the table, whereupon the internal slide (il) is moved on the upper or lower part ot the table and stopped on the stati', notes or note wanted; then the discs l and 5 are turned so that 'the tone and interval wanted appears in the openings 12-l3- Should, for instance,the scale of Gr sharp major be performed with the interval t an octave, the fundamental note G will be fixed by means oi" the index,` whereupon the disc el is so turned that the word Linajor appears, and afterwards the disc so that the word octave7 also appears.

To perform the arpeggios the preceding discs used are covered vvith the Word stop; then, after lixing, as already pointed out, the fundamental note, the tivo discs 6 and 7 are so turned that the sequence otI the notes and the interval Wanted appear in the openings la and l5. Should the arpeggio on the :fundamental perfect major accord in the tonics et C major be performed, the note et' C major is lixed in the upper part of the table by means or the index, whereupon the disc 6 is so turnel that the Words per- 'ect major appear, and then the dise 7 so that the vvord fundamental appears` Any other exercise may be pertormed in a similar Way.

In short, by means ot the appliance according to the invention the fundamental note, the tonality, the interval for the gamut oit all the scales, the tui'idamental note. the sequence ot the notes, tonics and interval ot' the principal arpeggios are indicated.

The device is capable of showing the indication ot several hundreds et exerc'ms to be daily performed Without the necessity ot consulting any sheet of music.

Having noiv iarticularly described and ascertained my said invention and the manner in which the same is to be periormed, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a musical s vnoptical table and in-v dicator serving to point clel, tonics. major or minor, tor assisting in the performance of exercises, the combination olf a plurality et indei'iendently rotatable discs having legends thereon pertaining to tones, intervals of all the scales, inversions ot arpeggios, and spaced superin'iposed casing members embracing the discs and provided vvith openings through which the legends on the discs may be seen, the face ot the casing having a series oit musical stalls indicating the sharps and flats with the notes of the corresponeing tonics.

2. ln a musical synoptical table and indicator serving to point clef, tonics, major or minor, for assisting in the performance of exercises, the combination otl a plurality of independently rotatable discs having legends thereon pertaining to tones, intervals ot all the scales and inversions of arpeggios. spaced superimposed casing members embracing the discs and provided vvith openings through vvliich the legends on the discs may be seen, the tace et the casing forming a table and having a series of musical stads indicating the sharps and flats vvith the notes of the corresponding tonics, and an indicating slide movable gies, spaced superimposed casing members embracing the discs and having openings through which the legends on the discs may be seen, the tace ot the easing forming a table and having a series ol musical stai'i's, one series above the other and indi 'ating the sharps and tlats with the notes o1" the corH responding tonics. means for rotating each disc, a. slide indicator movable, over the stalls, and a second slide carried by the iii-st slide and adapted to bemovcd over the lower I.'

6. A musical device as claimed in claim 5, including means `for attaching same to the musical instrument vvith vrhich it is used, substantially as described.
