The invention relates to new and useful improvements in jar closing machines, and mere particularly a jar closing machine wherein the jars pass continuously and in succession through the machine, and wherein the securingmeans operates to secure a metal cap to a without stopping the movement ot the jar. By the term cap is included jar bands and other forms of closures having a depending flange.
jin object of the invention is to provide a machine et the above type wherein the 'liauge of the metal cap is turned underf neath a ledge at the mouth of the jar by means ot a stationary member with which the cap maires rolling contact,r and wherein the initial inturning of the lower edge oi the vflange accomplished by positive means while the final inturning of the flange and the sealing of the cap on vthe jar is accomipilished by yielding means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of' the above type with traveling means for holding the cap in con "-1 tact with the member which re-shapes the flange. which traveling means is formed so as to yield under excessive pressure.
i still further obiect of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type which so constructed that the jar is supported by the ledge at the mouth of the jar during the sealing of the cap to the jar.

The machine embodying the present invention is an improvement upon the jar closing machine shown in my prior Patent No. 1,495,650, dated May 27, 1924.
The machine is especiallyT adapted 'for attaching metal caps, such as a metal jar band cap, to the mouth of a glass jar. The jar has a ledge at its mouth and the cap is secured thereto by turning the lower portion of the flange ony the cap underneath the ledge. The jars with the caps loosely resting thereon are brought to the machine by an endless conveyor. Just before the jars enter the machine a traveling pressure means engages the jarcap and insures that the ca-p is properly seated on the The machine includes two parallel spaced menibers, one of which is stationary,l while the other is movable. Thev movable means operates to convey the jar through the inachine and to roll the cap flangey along the stationary member. The stationary meinber is so constructed as to turn the liange ot the cap underneath the ledge on the The stationary member and the movable member are further so constructed as to support the ar from the ledge at the mouth et' the jar. rlhe stationary member at its entrance end has co-operating members held in fixed relation to each other which operate to inturn the flange of the cap underneath the ledge on the cap to a certain extent. The face of this member which engages the lower edge of the flange is provided with vtransverse ribs which operate to corrugate or break the extreme edge of the flange lo assist in the inturning of the flange underneath the ledge. The remainder of the stationary closing` means has co-operating parts Which yield relative to each other and these con'iplete the inturning of the flange underneath the ledge on the jar. lnasmuch they yield any liability of crushing the jar at the ledge is avoided. The movable member travels along a bar which is yieldinglv mounted so that. the movable member gril or moves laterally relative to 'the station member and avoids the enc ive pressure which, in a direction diamctriczlly across the mouth of the jar, might result in the crushing of the jar.
Referring more in detail to the drawings,` my improved machine includes a supporting base l, carryinga standard 2, on which the main frame structure 3 of the machine is mounted. Secured to this main frame structure are side frames l and 5. Carried by said side frames, at one end ot' the machine, is a pulley G. At the other end ot the side frames is a pulley 7. The endlos"- conveyor belt S runs over these pulleys G and 7. lillounted in the main frame 3 is a main shaft 9, arrying a gear wheel, l0, which meshes uith a gear wheel carried by the armature shaft of the motor il. t will be understood, of course, that the main sha't't may be driven in any suitable way, but l prefer the above means, l am able thereby to provide a self-contained machine.
On the shaft 9 is a beveled rear i3. ji shaft lll extends lengthwise of the machine and carries a gear l2 which meshes with a gear i3. This shaft i-lcarries a beveled gear l at its other end, which in turn meshes With a beveled gear 7,6, carried b v a vertical shaft` i7. The vertical shaft l? earries a. spiral gear 13 Which meshes i .i a gear 19 on a cross shaft 20. This eros matt 20 carries a sprocket Wheel over which a sprocket chain 2l runs, and this sprocket chain 2l in turn runs over a sprocl-:et Wheel carried by the shatt on which the pulley 7 is mounted. rlhus it that the pulley 7 is positively driven from the motor and this drives the endless conveyor.
The jars enter from the left-hand end of the machine, as vievved in Fig. l. hey are fechon to the conveyor belt and are conveyed by said conveyor belt into the machine. Suitable guide rails 24- guide the as it enters the machine. The jars to be closed are provided with al ledge at their upper ends, of the Well-known character, and the metal cap has a flange which is adapted to be turned underneath saidL ledge.
In Fig. 8 of the drawings, l have shown a jar indicated at J, with a metal cap C ing lightly thereon. Said jar l is a ledge i underneath which the loiver portion c of the flange of the metal cap is adapted to be turned for securing the cap to the jar. lt essential that the cap shall be seated on the jar before it enters the closing' mechanism of my machine. ln order that this may be insured, l have provide-d a travelj pressure means underneath which the jars pass. Said pressure means consists of a travelingl belt 25, running over pulleys 26 and 2T. These pulleys are mounted on a frame 28 which is pivoted at to the frame of the machine. A rod il() extends through a b 1acket arm 3l, also mounted on the frame of the machine and this rod has a ball head connection with the frame supporting the pressure means. A. spring' 32 surrormds this rod 30 and bears at one end against the bracket 3l and at its other end against a nut on the rod. This spring normally presses the rod downwardly and thus holds the traveling' belt 25 in contact with the jai-sv; passing beneath the same. The entire frame 28 can yield bodily compre-1sing the spring 32. rlhe downward movement of this pressure device is limited by means of nuts 34.
Mounted in the side frames l and 5 is a shaftl This shaft carries a sprocket Wheel which is driven by a sprocket chain 36. rlhis sprocket chain 36 runs over a sprocket Wheel on the shaft 20. A belt tightener 37 is provided for the sprocket chain 3G to take up the slack therein as the belt is of considerable length and this belt tightener serves as a means for holding? the chain. from contact With the frame and insures the free running` of the chain. A. beveled gear on the shaft 35 meshes With a beveled gear 33 carried by a vertical shaft 39, and this shaft 39 in turn carries a beveled gear l0 which meshes with a beveled. gear on the shaft ell Which carries the pulley 27. Thus it is that the pulley 27 is positively driven and this drives the traveling belt 25. A plate 4t2 `carried by the frame 28 backs up theportion of the belt between the pulleys. The belt travels over this plate and the plate prevents the belt from yieldin except as the entire frame yields.
lt will be readily seen from the above that as the jar passes underneath 'this pressure means the metal .cap will be pressed dovvn onto the jar and fully seated thereon. The jars, of course, are supported and carried along by the conveyor belt 8 at this time.
Rising from the main frame members are four posts 43. Tivo of these posts are located adjacent the entrance end of the machine and the other tivo at the delivery end of the machine. There is a yoke i4 for each pair of posts which extends across thc machine. Mounted to slide freely on each pair of posts is a cross head llo. A rod (3 secured to the cross head and this rod passes up through the yoke member del. Located in rear of the conveyor chain formed by these plates and links is a bar 87. Said bar is carried by bolts 8S9 which extend through openings in the rail 8l and springs 89 between this bar 8? and the rail normally press the bar 87 outwardly. .Said bar is formed with projecting ledge 90 which extends between the plates '7l and 72 and further aids in holding the chain conveyor so that it will travel in a horizontal line. limit the outward movement of the bar S7. The metal cap which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 lies between these beveled t'aces and is engaged thereby.

The reason that the sprocket wheel is splined to this shaft is that the sprocket wheel and the mechanism associated therewith are mounted in bearings carried by the side rail 5l and are vertically adjustable therewith so as to set the machine tor different heights of jars. Said side rail has projecting brackets 95 which serve as a bearing` snpport for the sprocket Wheel 77. At the other end. of the machine there are brackets 9G.j carried by the side rail which support the sprocket wheel 76.

Said plates will yield to any exces 've pressure caused by unerenness in the thickness of the metal or the glass formingr the ledge at th-e mouth of the jar and vill prevent said jar from beingY crushed. Furthermore. inasmuch as the jar is lifted from the conveyor belt and the pressure which turns the metal cap imderneath'the ledge is all applied directly at the month of the jar by the yielding` pressure ot the plates 62, it will be seen that there is no danger ot crushing the jar by reason of the fact that the jars vary in height and a jar of more than the average height passes through the machine. The jars when they leave the plates 62 will pass down the curved ledge TO and be gradually lowered on to the conveyor belt which will convey them out of the machine. The travelling chain which. conveys the jar through the machine ancL causes it to turn or roll alongi` the closing' rail can likewise yield to extreme diameters of jars and this prevents any liability of creating a pressure diametrically of the mouth of the jar which is lik-ely to crush the same.
Said guide rail is provided with lugs lOO.
Adjusting bolts 101 are secured to these lugs so that said bolts may be turned, but they cannot move endwise in the lugs. Said bolts are carried by threaded projecting sleeves 102 toi-mcd as u jert of the side rail of the machine. By turning these adjusting bolts 101 after the bolts have been looseiied, the upper' guide rail may be adjusted towarc or away from line center ot the ina- -chine and thus set to accommodate jars of different diameters. The entire frame can be raised and lowered by the hand wheels A8 and thus take care oit jars of different heights, as has already been stated.
At the delivery endof the machine'there is a disk 103 which disk overlies the conveyor belt and is adapted to receive the jars from the conveyor belt. Said disk is carried by a shaft 105, mounted in a suitable bearing 106 on the main frame.` This shaft carries a beveled gear 10T which meshes with a beveled gear 10SEL on the shaft 23 which carri-es the pulley 7 Byy this mechanism the disk is rotated. The edge oit the disk is beveled so that the jars may be readily forced up onto the disk by the conveyor. A guide rail 108 mounted at 109 on the main frame extends over the conveyor belt and the rotating disk and directs the jars onto the disk. A radial guide rail 110 extends to the outer edge of the disk 103 and operates to strip the jars :from the disk. In order to determine the setting ot the machine Jfor` provided gage different size caps,y I have plates 11.1, carried by the upper frame strueture and the adjustable rail is provided with a point-er 112. This gage plate has agage formed thereon and the finger cooperating therewith will indicate the size of the cap for which the machine is set. This gage is in millimeters as caps are usually referred to by their diameter in millimeters.
It is thought that the operation of the machine will be obvious from the detail'description given above. The jars with the caps lightly resting thereon are placed on the conveyor belt and are conveyed thereby underneath the pressure mechanism which seats the cap on the The caps then pass in between the spaced rails along the sides ot the machine, one of which carries the traveling links and carries the plates for turning the metal underneath the ledge on the ar. As has been described the lower edge ot the metalcap is first more or less broken or corrugated by the. ribs on the rail forming a part of th-e closing means, and the edge of the flange turned underneath the ledge at the mouth ot the jar. It will b-cnoted that the rails tor turning the 'flange underneath'the ledge on the cap which yield are made to yield in independent sections so that the jars may be ted through the machine closely 'following each other and if one rail yields, because of eXtra 1hickness of the metal on the ledge at'the mouth of' the jar, the next following jar will be properly closed as'it is only the plate which engages the cap and ledge that will be moved.
lt some times occurs that the spilled contents of a jar or broken jar will stick to the conveyor belt S,v which would cause trouble when another jar enters resting on the same. In order to avoid this, I have provided a scraper' S, carried bya yielding arm A, which presses against the lower face of the traveling conveyor belt and scrapes off any accumulation thereon.
lt is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing 'from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

A jar closing machine having in combination, means for turning the flange of the jar cap underneath the ledge on the jar, means for conveying the jar with the cap resting thereon through the machine vwith the cap in rolling contact with the iange turning means, said flange turning means in# cluding spaced devices between which the lianged edge ot' the cap passes for positively starting the inturning of the flange on the cap, and spaced devices for finishing the inturning of the flange underneath the ledge of theljar, and thus sealing the cap on the jar, said last-named devices being mounted so as Ato yield relative to each other. n

A jar closing machine including in combination, a supporting fra-me, an endless conveyor mounted on said frame, means for driving said endless conveyor, posts rising from said trame at each yside of said conveyor, a yoke at each end of the machine connecting said posts, a cross head at each end oi the machine adapted to slide on said posts, a threaded rod extending through each yoke and connected to the cross head associated therewith, athreaded sleeve on each rod adapted to rest on the upper tace of the yoke with which said rod is associated, means for turning the sleeve for raising and lowering the cross head, a jar closing and conveying means supported by the cross heads, said closing means including devices tor engaging and 'turning the flange oit the cap underneath the ledge on the jar, said conveying means including a series oic traveling plates connected to form an endless chain, said plates being spaced and positioned so as to engage the ilange on the cap and force said cap into contact With the closing means, and springs for normally forcing the traveling plates toward the closing means for yieldingly holding the cap in Contact therewith, said closing means including a series of plates adapted to yield vertically for finishing the fill means for turning inturning of the flange whereby the means :for inturning the flange and for holding the caps in rolled Contact with said closing means, both may yield to accommodate varying thicknesses in the glass and the metal.

A jar closing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, an endless conveyor mounted on said frame, means for driving said endless conveyor, posts rising from said frame at each side of said conveyor, a yoke at each end of the machine connecting said posts, a cross head at each end of the machine adapted to slide on said posts, a threaded rod extending through each yoke and connected to the cross head associated therewith, a threaded sleeve on each rod adapted to rest on the upper face of the yoke with which said rod is associated, means for turning the sleeve Jfor raising and lowering the cross head, a jar closing and conveying means supported by the cross heads, said closing means including devices for engaging and turning the iiange of the cap underneath the ledge on the jar, said conveying means including a series of traveling plates connected to form an endless chain, said plates being spaced and positioned so as to engage the fiange on the cap and force said cap into cont-act with the closing means, and springs for normally forcing the traveling plates toward the closing means for yieldingly holding the cap in contact therewith, said closing means including a series of plates adapted to 'yield vertically for finishing the inturning of the flange whereby the means for inturning the flange and for holding the caps in rolled contact with said closing means both may yield to accommodate varying thicknesses in the glass and the metal, said closing means and conveying means being constructed so as to lift the jar from the conveyor belt and support the same by a ledge thereon during the turning of the cap underneath said ledge.

A jar closing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, an endless conveyor mounted on said frame, means for driving said endless conveyor, posts rising from said frame at each side of said conveyor, a yoke at each end of the machine connecting said posts, a cross head at each end of the machine adapted to slide on said posts, a threaded rod extending through each yoke and connected to the cross head associatedtherewith, a threaded sleeve on each rod adapted to rest on the upper face of the yoke with which said rod is associated, the sleeve for raising and lowering the cross head, a jarclosing and conveying means supported by the cross heads, said closing means including devices for engaging and turning'the flange of the capv underneath-the ledge on the jar, said conveying means including a series of traveling plates connected to form an endless chain, said plates being spaced and positioned so as to engage the flange on the cap and force said cap into contact with the closing means, springs for normally Jforcing the traveling plates means for yieldingly holding the cap in` contact therewith, said closing means including a series of plates adapted to yield vertically for finishing the inturning of the flange whereby the meansfor inturning the flange and for holding the caps in rolled contact with said closing means both may yield to accommodate varying thicknesses in the glass and the metal, said closing means and conveying means being constructed so as to lift the jar from the conveyor belt and support the same by a ledge thereon during the turning of' the cap underneath said ledge, means for adjusting the closing means toward and from the conveying means for setting the machine for different sized caps, and means connected to the sleeves and to each other for raising and lowering the cross heads for different heights of jars.

A jar closing machine including` in combination, a supporting frame,l an endless conveyor mounted on said frame, means for driving said endless conveyor, posts rising from said frame at each side of said conveyor, a yoke at leach end of the machine connecting said posts, a cross head at -each end of the machine adapted to slide on said posts, a` threaded rod extending through each yoke and connected to the cross head associated therewith, a threaded sleeve on each rod adapted to rest on the upper face of the l yoke with which said rod is associated, means for turning the sleeve for raising and lowering the cross head, a ar closing and conveying means supported by the cross heads, said closing means including devices for engaging and turning the flange of the cap underneath the ledge of the jar, said closing means and conveying means being constructed so as to lift the jar from the conveyor belt and support the same by a ledge thereon during the turning ofy the cap underneath said ledgemeans for adjusting the closing means toward and from the conveying means for setting the machine for different sized caps, means connecting the sleeves where the same are simultaneously operated for raising and lowering the cross heads Jfor different heights of jars, and pressure means at the entrance end of the machine supported by said cross heads and movable up and down therewith, said pressure means operating to engage the ycaps loosely resting on the jars on vthe conveyor belt for seating the caps before they enter the closing means.

A jar closing? machine including in combination a. support-ing frame, an endless conveyor extending the length of said trame, a supporting structure spaced above said conveyor belt and carried by said supporting frame, a bar carri-ed by said supporti-ng' structure and extendin lengthwise of the machine parallel with the travel of the belt, a series of plates associated with said bar and lined thereto, said plates 'forming with said bar a recess to receive and start the int-urningl of the tlange on the cap, a series of plates associated with said bar and independently yielding relative thereto for engaging the flange and finishing` the inturnot' the same underneath the ledge on the jar, a conveyor means carried by said supporting` structure for engaging; the other side of the jar cap for yieldingly pressing the jar and cap into contact with said plates, said plates and conveying means being' positioned relative to the endless conveyor so as to lift the jar from the conveying belt and support the same by the ledge oit the mouth ot' the jar during the closing ot the cap thereon, and a pressure means carried by said supporting` structure :tor engaging and seating the caps on the jars before they enter the closing means.

A jar closing machine including .in combination a supporting frame, an endless conveyor extending` the length of said frame. a supporting structure spaced above said conveyor belt and carried by said supper-ting frame, a bar carried by said supporting structure and extending lengthwise of the machine parallel with the travel of the bel-t, a series et plates associated with sa-id bar and lined thereto, said plates forming with vsmid bar a recess to receive and start the inlll() turning of the flange on the cap, a series of plates associated with said bar and independently yielding relative thereto for engaging the flange and finishing the inturning of the same underneath the ledge on the j ar, a conveying means carried by said supporting structure for engaging the other side of the jar cap for yieldingly pressing the jar and cap into contact with said plates, said plates and conveying means being positioned relative to the endless conveyor so as to lift the jar from the conveying belt and support the same by the ledge of the mouth of the jar during the closing of the cap thereon, and a pressure means carried by said supporting structure for engaging and seating the caps on the jars before they enter the closing means, said yielding plates being constructed so as to lower the jar on to the conveyorl belt after the cap has been closed on the jar.

A jar closing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, an endless conveyor extending the length of said frame, al supporting structure spaced above said conveyor belt and carried by said supporting frame, a bar carried by said supporting structure and extending lengthwise of the machine parallel with the travel of the belt, a series of plates associated with said bar and fixed thereto, said plates forming with said bar a recess to receive and start the inturning of the flange on the cap, a series of plates associated with said bar and independently yielding relative thereto for engaging the .flange and finishing the inturning of the same underneath the ledge on the jar, a conveying means carried by said supporting structure for engaging the other side of the jar cap for yieldingly pressing the jar and cap into contact with said plates, said plates and conveying means being vpositioned relative to the endless conveyor so as to lift the jar from the conveying belt and support the same by the ledge of the mouth of the jar during the closing of the cap thereon, a pressure means for engaging supporting structure the caps for seating the same on the jars before they are engaged by the closing plates, said pressure means including a traveling belt, a yielding plate over which said belt travels, a spring for forcing said plate in a downward direction, and means for limiting the downward movement of said plate.

A vjar closing' machine including in combination, a supporting frame, an endless conveyor extending the length of said frame, a supporting structure spaced above said conveyor belt and carried by said supporting frame, a bar carried by said supporting structure and extending lengthwise of the machine parallel with the travel of the belt, a series of plates associated with said bar and fixed thereto, said plates forming with said bar a recess to receive and start the intnrning of the flange on the cap, a series of plates associated with said bar and independently yielding relative thereto for engaging the flange and finishing the inturning of the same underneath the ledge on the jar, a conveying means carried by said for engaging the other side of the jar cap for yieldingly pressing the jar and capV into contact with said plates,
said plates and conveying means being poi sitioned relative to the endless conveyor so as to lift the jar from the conveying belt and support the same by the ledge of the mouth of the jar during the closing of the cap thereon, a pressure means for engaging the caps for seating the same on the jars before they are engaged by the closing plates, said pressure means` including a traveling belt,la yielding plate over which said belt travels, a spring for forcing said plate in a downward direction, and means for limiting the downward movement of said plate, said yielding plate at the delivery end of the machine being beveled off on its upper face so that the jar passing off the end of the same will move down onto the conveyor belt.
