SHERWOOD M. CHASE; OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO- THE CHASE FOUNDRY & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
COUPLING nnvron.
Application filed November 3, 1926. Serial No. 146,050.
My inventionrelates to coupling devices. It is the object of my invention to provide a coupling device which will automatically operate in the making of the coupling and in which the coupling member will move downwardly in the coupling operation and uncoupling operation, thereby allowing a load to be placed over the coupler without interfering with the coup-lers movements.
It is a further'object to provide a coupler which may be operated by the hand or foot of the operator when it is desired to uncouple the couplers bein so arranged that this is possible without respect to the location of the load on the truckwith which the coup ler is a part. I
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a truck with one portion of the coupling unit which is placed upon the handle of the truck in section;
I Figure 2 is a side elevation of the springactuated coupler partially in section to show the arrangement of the spring; I
Figure 3 is a section through the release projection on the coupler head; 7
Figure 4: is a section through the complete coupler combination.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 11 are wheels supporting a truck frame of any desired kind. The type of vehicle is not important. I
Mounted. upon the rear end of this frame is a casting constituting the coupler head. This casting consists of a supporting portion 3 mounted in the frame 2 of the vehicle. The supporting portion 3 has a pair of outwardly extending spaced parallel portions designated 4, through which passes transversely a shaft 5 supporting the coupler hook arm 6. This hook arm is provided with an internally disposed space 7 on one side of which is the eye 8 for mounting the hook on the shaft 5 and on the other side of which is a partition 9.
In the space thus formed by the side walls of the hook 6 is located a helical spring 10,
the bottom of which is supported on a transverse bottom plate 11 carried between the side walls 4. At the top, the side walls are closed by the guide plate 12 which projects rearwardly having a downwardly and forwardly extending cam face 13, against which the eye 14: of the handle 15 rests and along which it travels as it passes by the nose 16 of the hook into the space designated 17 which is the finally locked engaging position.
This hook 16 is provided with the arcuate face on the exterior thereof, designated 18, on which this eye '14 rides into engagement with the face 18. A depending loop 19 is provided, which may be engaged by the hand or foot of the operatorfor depressing the hook to permit the coupling to be uncoupled.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.1. In a coupler, a frame having a hook supporting portion and a stationary eye guiding portion, a hook mounted therein, yielding means to maintain said hook in engagement with said guiding portion, whereby. the eye may be pressed againstthe exterior of said hook passing over the end thereof along the guiding portion to a point behind the hook into locking position.
2. In a coupler, a stationary supporting and guiding member, a hook member and yielding means to maintain said hook member normally in locking position and means carriedon said hook member for moving it to unlocked position.
8. In a coupler, a supporting member having a stationary guiding surface, a hook pivoted thereon, yielding means to maintain said hook in looking position, said hook and guiding surface of the supporting member being below the loading surface of the vehicle to which said coupler is attached.
4i. In combination in a coupler of a sup porting member adapted to support a coupling hook and having an overhanging ledge, the upper surface of which is adapted to support a load, a coupling hook pivotally supported on said member beneath said surface, a stationary guiding surface on said member disposed adjacent the nose of said hook and yielding means to maintain said nose in engagement with said surface.
5. In combination in a coupler of a supporting member adapted to support a coupling hook and having an overhanging stationary ledge, the'upper surface of which is adapted to support a load, a coupling hook pivotally supported. on said member beneath said surface, a guiding surface on said member disposed adjacent the nose of said hook and yielding means to maintain said nose in engagement with said surface, and means for normally engaging said hook to move it to uncoupling position.
6. In combination in a coupler of a supporting member adapted to support a coupling hook and having a stationary overhanging ledge, the upper surface of which is adapted to support a load, a coupling hook pivotally supported on said member beneat-h said surface, a guiding surface on said member disposed adjacent the nose of said hook and yielding means to maintain said nose in engagement with said surface, and means for normally engaging said hook to move it to uncoupling position, said means consisting of a loop projecting from said hook.
7 In combination in a coupler, means for attaching the coupler to a vehicle, a hook supporting portion for a hook consisting of spaced side walls and a transverse bottom, a hook pivoted therebetween, said hook having an internally disposed downwardly opening socket, a spring located in said socket and between said hook and said transverse bottom, a downwardly disposed stationary guiding face mounted above said hook on said hook supporting means adapted to guide an eye over the end of said hook into locking position and an eye for that purpose in combination with said coupler mechamsm.
8. In combination 1n a coupler, means for mazees attaching the coupler to a vehicle, a hook supporting portion for a hook consisting of spaced side walls and a transverse bottom, a hook pivoted therebetween, said hook having an internally disposed downwardly opening socket, a spring located in said socket and between said hook and said transverse bottom, a downwardly disposed stationary guiding face mounted above said hook on said hook supporting means adapted to guide an eye over the end of said hook into locking position and an eye for that purpose in combination with said coupler mechanism, said hook having an arcuate head directed upwardly and inwardly towards said guiding face first mentioned whereby the eye is guided to the guiding face by the head of the hook.
9. In combination in an automatic coupler, a hook support, a hook having a guiding head, said support having a stationary guiding face adjacent the nose of the hook and yielding means for maintaining said hook normally in looking position with its nose against said guiding face.
10. In combination in an automatic coupler, a hook support, a hook having a guiding head, said support having a stationary guiding face adjacent the nose of the hook and yielding means for maintaining said hook normally in locking position with its nose against said guiding face, and a depending member to permit of the manual operation of said hook.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
SHERWOOD M. CHASE.
