Rotatably mounted on the bottom side of each of the brackets 7 is a pair of vertical rollers 11 which is adapted to track on the inner faces of the side forms l for the purpose of holding the sub-grade templatelin proper position against lateral shifting with respect to the road bed. The main TL-beam 10 is positioned with the web thereof in a horizontal position so that the flanges of the supporting beam are vertically disposed with the advance flange of the -beam having a plurality of steel scraping bars or teeth 12 rigidly secured thereon in spaced relation by means of clamps 13 or other suitable means. rlhe teeth 12 are adjustably mounted in position with the lower cutting edges thereof in a line conforming to the contour of the sub-grade which is to be produced. It will thus be seen that the teeth 12 are clamped in a position set at sub-grade elevation to scrape loose all material above sub-grade elevation preparatory to having said cut oil' material leveled to proper elevation by the template proper.
The rear 'flange of the 1-beam 10 has rigidly bolted thereto a plurality of template plate sections 111, the lower edges of which are cut to conform to the contour of the subgrade. The template plate sections 14 are reenforced by means of braces 15. Rigidly Abut removably bolted to the bottom edge of each of the template plate sections 14: is an angle iron protecting shoe 16 to protect the template edges of said template plate sections.
lt will thus be noted that the protecting template shoes may be readily replaced when worn lat a comparatively small cost. The template shoes thus act as guards for the lower edge of the template proper and thereby insure the acoriracy of the template at all times. lt will also be noted that the template plate sections being removably bolted in position permit the same to be removed or changed so that different shapes of subgrades may be readily obtained The improved steel sub-grade template is adapted to be positioned across the road as shown. in Figure 1 with the supporting rollers 5 running on the forms al.. rI`he sub-grade template is adapted to be pulled along by the concrete miner 17 having caterpillar treads 18 and a framework 19. The mixer bucket 20 is supported on a bucket boom 21 which projects rearwardly and may be swung transversely of the linished sub-grade section 1 to permit the concrete to be poured in the positions Where it is needed. The
mixer 17 is also provided with an overflow pan 22 to prevent concrete from dropping in front of the sub-grade template to clog up the template teeth. It will of course be understood that any desired type of concrete mixer may be used for mixing the concrete and for propelling the sub-grade template along the road. Connected to the concrete mixer frame 19 are the ends of a pair of pull rods 23, the other ends of which yare remov ably connected to the end portions of the template I-beam 10.
In case the sub-grade template has been advanced too far and it is desired to back the same up, a pair of cables or rods 211 are secured to the web of the I-beam 10. Said rods 24 areprovided with hooks 25 to permit the same to be hooked to the bucket 20 so that the sub-grade template may be moved backwardly as the bucket is advanced on the boom 21. Vhen this is done it will of course be understood that the pull rods 23 are released from the sub-grade template I-beam 10. As shown in Figure 1, a guiderod or bar 26 is connected to the mixer frame 19 and entends transversely to one .side of the road and is adapted to be advanced along the inner face of one of the forms l to serve as a guide for the purpose or" steering the mixer along the crown or center of the sub-grade. lThe guide member 26 thus acts as a. means whereby the mixer may be held to the crown or middle of the road thereby obvivating any undue side pulls or strains on the sub-grade template. As clearly shown in Fig. 1 the ends of the sub-grade template Lbeam 10 are spaced a short distance from the inner faces of the forms l to permit the sub-grade template to clear or pass over overlapping reenforcing rods or bars which are positioned substantially parallel to the sides of the road adjacent the inner faces of the forms 4L.
The operation is as follows:
In the construction of concrete pavements, after the sub-grade has been prepared to what is believed to be substantially the correr-t elevation and contour, side forms 4l are mounted in position along` the side of the road for the purpose of affording means for building the road to the required width. and along a predetermined er selected path. After the initial pre .iaration of the subgrade, a concrete mixer is run onto the crown of lhe sub-grade und the forward ends of the pull rods 23 are connected to the mixer framework 19 as shown in Figure 1. The rear ends of the pull rods 23 are removably clamped or engaged on the advance flange of the sub-grade template l-beam 10 to permit the sub-grade template to be pulled or dragged behind the mixer as the mixer is advanced along the sub-grade. It will also be noted that with this construction the template sections may be changed for different shapes of sub-grade and the teeth l2 may be adjusted to conform to the corrected or changed contour of the template proper.
The improved sub-grade` template is of sturdy construction and of suicient Weight to produce an accurate sub-grade for a con lil() llo crete pavement in a substantially short time hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
l. A sub-grade template comprising a beam, roller supports adjustable on the ends thereof adapted to track over forms on the side of the road to hold the beams supported in posit-ion, guide rollers for guiding the sub-grade template along said forms and over the grade, a plurality of teeth adjustably carried directly on the advanced side of the beam, and a template carried on the rear side of the beam, said teeth being set to conform tothe contour of said template.
2. A sub-grade template comprising a beam, brackets connected to the ends thereof, supporting rollers adjustably mounted on the brackets and adapted .to track on forms on the side of a road under construction, guide rollers on said brackets adapted to track on the inner surface of said forms to guide the course of the sub-grade template over the grade, a plurality of teeth positioned at spaced intervals across the advance side of the beam, clamping means for holding said teeth removably secured in position on the advance side of said beam, a plurality of'template sections removably secured on the rear side of said beam', and shoes removably secured on the template edges of said sections to reenforce and protect the same.
3. A sub-grade template comprising a steel beam adapted to be positioned transversely of a road under construction, roller means at the ends of said beam for supporting the same, teeth secured to one of the flanges of said beam for the purpose of permitting high spots in the sub-grade to be cut down, and a template on another flange of said beam adapted to permit the sub-grade to be reduced to its required contour and elevation.
4. A sub-grade template comprising a steel beam, roller means on the ends thereof for supporting the same, guide rollers carried by said roller means, a plurality of steel teeth positioned in spaced relation across one side of the beam, clamps for removably holding the same secured in position, a plurality of template sections removably secured to the opposite side of said beam, braces for reenforcing the same, and shoes on the lower cutting edges of said sections to reenforce and protect the same.
A sub-grade template comprising a beam adapted to be positionedtransversely of a road under construction, adjustable means lfor supporting the same on the forms on the side of the road, a template on one side of said beam, and a plurality of cutter teeth transversely adjustable on the opposite side of said beam, said cutter teeth being arranged so that the cutting edges thereof will form contour corresponding to the contour of the template. j c
G. A sub-grade template, comprising a steel beam, brackets secured to the ends thereof, guide rollers on said brackets adapted to track on the inner sides of forms at the side of the road, supporting rollers, means for adjustably supporting the same on said brackets to permit adjustment of the sub-grade template with respect to the grade of the road, a template on one side of said beam, and cutting means adjustably mounted on the opposite side of said beam.
7. A sub-grade template comprising a steel I-beam, brackets on the ends thereof, supporting rollers and guide rollers on said brackets, a template on one flange of said I-beam, shoes carried by said template, and cutter members on theopposite flange of said beam arranged to conform to the contour of the shoes on said-template.
8. A sub-rade template comprising a steel I-beam, adjustable `means for supporting the sameon the forms at the side of a road under construction, scraper means removably secured to one flange of said I-beam, a plu- Y rality of template sections secured to the other flange of said I-beam, and template shoes removably secured to said template sections.
