Description

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB HEG'KENDORN, OF lELK'ION, MARYLAND.
IM PROVEM ENT IN PLOWS..
Specification torming part of Letters Patent No. 16,277, dated December 23, 1856.
To. all whom tt may concern:
of Elkton, in the countyjof Cecil and State of Maryland, have invented a certain .new` and useful I mprovementin the Construction of Self# Sharpening-Flows, ofwhich the following is a' full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part ofthis specification, andin which-f- Figure 1 represents, partly in perspective, a mold-boa`rd side view of the plow without the beam and'handles'; Fig. 2, -allandside view of the same, and Fig. 3a similar view with the detachable landside lremoved; Fig. 4, a view in perspective of the interior of the mold-board `with its permanent landjside; 'Fig.f5, a view in perspective of Aa four-colte'red 'reversible self- 1sharpening' point; Fig. 6,- an interior face viewl of .a double-b'laded share, and Fig.'.7 an interior side yview ofthe detachable landside.'
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several-,ligeras v Toenableothers skilled in the art toA make and use my invention, I now proceed teldescribe fully and'in detail the construction and relative` arrangement of the several parts of the plow .as depicted in the accompanying drawings, commencing with Fig. 3, which represents .the plow 'with' .the landside removed V-tor the purpose of showing the positionand arrangement of the' four coltered reversible selffsharpening point F F F F," that is ,placed in a crotch formed by a projection, A, and the upper end of one of the colterport'ions of said point placed ina recess, z, that is madeby the junction in front-ot' the upper part of the main landside'H with the moldgboard, thence ex;- tendng back and :under a flange-top, p, of said main landside. 'This figure also shows the position of the securing-holt D, that passes up through the sole or base ange B of .the detachable landside l in, Fig. 7, over a colter portion of the point] ying on a curved part ot' thelwersectionof the main landside, thence over oneblade ofthe share J and another colter portionof the point lying under the upper' 'sect-ion of 'the mainlandside, and up 'through the top ange, p, of .the main landside, where and on which the bolt is held by a tightening'- mm A v lIn Fig.-4 the nioldboard Q alone is shown,
witl'rfthe main landsidc H cast fast to it, con-vv upper section, h, having the before-referredeto Be it known that I, JAcoB HEcKENDoRN,'
top ange', p. Where the lower section, h', joins the mold-hoard in front is the projection A, which forms a crotch to receive and to support en'dwise the four-coltered double-ended point, Figs. 3 and 5. The middle of the lower section, h', joins the back of the mold-board so high up as not to interfere with the edge of the blade J, Fg.3, of the double-bladed share, Figs. 3 and 6. This junction forms a stiften- -ing-brace, X. The mold-board Q'has a swell,
s, along the lower part ot' the inside, which ts in a cavity, M, in Fig. 6 of the double-bladed share,Fig`. 6, and serves to hold said share in proper place. v
ln Fig. 5 is shown tioned, and which lis made up of or forms four colters, either dt' which may be'used at pleasure, and two selfsharpening points, beingpointed and sharp at both ends, either end or either side up being used atpleasure, and all 'made of one casting. The middle of this fourcoltered double-ended selfsharpening point isopen, and it is spread or distended, and so curved or twisted, the twist being made, ,as it were, by turnin gon the whole casting from bothv endsin reverse directions, as to form four bevel- Bauges, the outer edges of which are sharpened and form'four colters, F F F F.` At the junc- Ztion of said colters with the points or ends are formed crotches f, which it vthe crotch formed by the' projection A oupthe moldfboard. Thus constructed and fitted, the one bevel-flangev serves to shieldthefront end of the mold-board,
and the one side, being concave, of ,said flange receives and protects the front'end'of the land! side. Thus constructed and fitted, as repre- .sented in Fig. 3, this twisted point has the same steady bearingwhicheVer--Way it be turned,'isv
reversible four times--that is, either endforemost or either'edgeuppermost-and forms four colter-snrfaces and two self-sharpening ends or points, vturning the end u'psidedown effectingy Selfsharpening by wear, as in other selfs'harp'ening points.
The double-bladert` share represented in Fig. 6 fits, as described, by its cavity M, on a swell,-
.s, along the lower edge of the inside face of the 'mold-hoard," the ,one blade J in Fig. 1 projecting from the outside ot themold-board in" front, to cut the ground, and the other blade .I lying c lose against the back or inside face ofthe mold-board, to strengthen' it, prevent the the point already menil accumulation of wet elods, See.; andiiot interfering with the other fitting parts, the share such of the' cutting parts as me not irl-,use -folj y cutting. It has isole or base flange., B, 0i1 which rests onerside or bevel-tlunge o t the foureoltered reversible 1ioint,\vhieh it elampslaiid holds from coming ofi',- :tnd prevents the 'point from breaking b ydownward thrust Oi being! moved from its place by oblique pressure;` and said sole B should be suitably Curved to give such bearing to the point and be ol'sueh n Width p as that t bearing@ may be formed along itsouteredge for the support of the cutting-blade J of the double-bladed Shure. `This. luudside S has n lek'ing-shouldei, o, on its insideY f21ee,
whieh serves t0 support und lock yet further the four-coltered point by the latteulting ou .and against said shoulder in one of the :ingles formed ,bythe meeting, of Ativo of the eolteis-- that is, the buck two.-
vThe securing of thelandside by bolt l) has already been described.
lL do not claim as new n reversible oi' self'- f-sliarpeniiig point; but
1 do claim vas new -mid usefulv The twisted four-eeltered double ended and reversible" 'self-shnrpening point F F FF, es-
sentially as described, and represented'in Fie. 5 of the drawings7 formed of one piece or eastiug and operating as point and eolter, as specilied.
