DES KOINES, IOWA, A CORPORATION 01" IOWA.
INTERLOCKING MULTIPLE SHINGLE.
Application filed Kay 15, 1925. Serial No, 30,638.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved interlockin shingle of asphalt, composition or other d exible or partially flexible characte".
A. further objectof this invention is to provide improved means for interlockinr: flexible shingles of multiple or strip form. A further object of this invention is to provide improved means for causing fies ible shingles to lie tint on a roof without the use of many nails. v
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved form of interlocking clip for shingles.
A further object ot this invention is to provide improved means for protecting the edges of shingles and also preventing the entrance of the elements when they are laid on a roof.
'With these and other objects in view, my irivention consists in the construction, at" rangement. and combination of elements hereinafter setforth, pointed out in the claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a double shingle embodying my improvements. Fig ure is a perspective view showing the lower face of one of the interlocking loo 5 adapted to be mounted on the upper face 0 a shingle. Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the lower side of one of the hooks adapted to be mounted on the lower side of a shingle and to interlock with the loop shown in Fig ore 2. Figure 4 :1 plan view showing 2:, tion of rooting for or! by my improved shingles. Figs 5 is e section on the low; iiif of lfigure "i, on on enlarger! scale This improvement relates to improved mean-'4 for laying flexible or semi flexible shingles, vshicli are ordinarily made of felt or com position and rovided with a. fireroofing coating of as. stos of other suite is mawrist, and it relates more particularly to such shingles which are of multiple shoracter, that is to say a strip presenting the appearance of two or more individual shingles.
In the construction of the shingle as shown the numeral '10 designates sv substantially rectangular body which may he of any suitable length and provided on its lower margin with projections '11. 12, in this instance .two in number and substantially trian ulavr i shape, On the upper surface oi the y l0, and arranged near its top margin and centrally of the oints 11, 12, are loop memhers of the inter ocking devices, one for each of the points 11, 12. Each loop member comprises a body 13 having teeth 14 projecti from its lower face adapted to he inserted through and olinched relative to the body of the shingle. The body of the clip 13 is slitted transversely at 15 and a portion centrally of said body and just above said slit is pressed upwardly to form a loop or keeper 16 open at its lower margin. If desired the central portion of the loop or keeper 16 may he cut out: and pressed downwardly to form a tongue 17 free at its lower margin, for a purpose which will he hereinafter made clear Above the loop or keeper 16, the body of the cli is formed with a transverse slot 18 adapte to receive a nail for attaching the shingle to a roof, The keeper cli just described is shown particularly in l igure 2, in inverted position. I
in Figure 3 l have shown a clip adapted to cooperate and interlock with the keeper clip above described, which comprises a substantially rectangular body 19 formed with projecting teeth 20 by means of which it may he firmly attached to the shingle. On one margin the clip 19 is provided with an integral project" iii or lug 531, preferably substantially semi-rirvular in outline, the main portion of which s in about the same plane as the body of the slip. The control portion of thrlug 21, however, pressed or it-idcnted to concave-convex form at 22, in the some direction as that in which the teeth Q0 proi ct. in other words toward the shingle when the clip is attached One of the clips 19 is placed on the lower surface of each projec tion 1i, :2 of the shingle near the apex thereof, and arranged with the log 21 pointing toward thr top of the shingle and up wordly of the roof when the shingle is in place.
In practical use a course of the shingles are laid end to end. preferably with a slight -ipace between them as indicated in Figure 4. and one nail is driven through the slot 18 of each clip 15 into the roof, as indicated at 3 in said F igure 4. Then another course is so erposed or: the course so laid, the lugs 21 0 such superposed course being first inserted by upward movement into the downwardly opening keepers 16 of the clips 13 on the o er cmrse, and then nails are ill) 2 row driven through lhe Sli'lhb 18 oi the :-;i.i; e;rpo-val mnrno. The inlerloihliing clips serve to guide the workmen in laying the shingles, out aho they serve to securely inter-look ihe euee sire coureos of shingles and to hold them sorurely to the roof. only one nail being need or each unit of ihe multiple shingle, The indented portion 22 of the lug; 2i fwrw--p by (OlliElCt with the lower lane of like ehingjlu on which the ip phn'wl. in in 1 margin of said hag may from the sminu u! the shingle nml facilitate its ent'mi'we in the loop or keeper 1n, rmil when lllfl'l itl such imilontml poi-lion whales in comm? .i'lllifli forcibly with. the adjacent wall of mini keeper.
