Description

SAMUEL M. CARPENTER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN TURN-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,741, dated May 4, 1875; application filed December 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. CARPEN- TER, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turn-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,-and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in turn-tables.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a cross-section of my invention; Fig. 2, a view of the bearings of the table with the table removed; and Fig. 3, an inverted View of the table-plate.
My invention consists in the following parts and combinations, as hereinafter specified and claimed, wherein- A is a suitable frame, made preferably in circular shape, in which are placed the standards a, converging toward the center of theframe A. Upon the standards a rests the removable and elevated circular groove or gutter 13, (this may be permanently attached in castii'ig or otherwise,) which is filled with the balls 0. D is the plate or turn-table proper, upon which the track is laid, constructed substantially as shown in Fig. 3, and suitably strengthened by a bracing device, and provided with a counter groove or gutter, D, in which engages the balls 0, which serve as friction-rollers to the table D, in a manner sufficiently obvious not to demand detailed description. E is a plate covering a man-hole for the usual purposes.
The operation is as follows: The different parts of my invention being adjusted as shown in Fig. 1., the balls 0, acting in the groove or gutter B, serve as friction-rollers to the plate or turn-table D, and insure its circular motion. The groove B in my device, by being elevated from the earth or any floor, resting as it does upon the standards a, is not liable to become clogged and impaired in its function by dirt and debris. This device dispenses with the central pin or pivot, which is always a source of trouble by binding in case of slight settling of one side of the table.
What I claim is l. The frame A, provided with the standards 60, upon which rests the elevated groove or gutter B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the frame A, provided with the standards a, the elevated groove or way B, balls 0, and platform D, provided with its counter-groove D, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of December, 1874.
SAMUEL M. CARPENTER.
