An insulated block 23 has electrical.contact points 24: adapted to be closed by one arm of the bell crank if the wire should be out. These contacts are wired through a battery 25 and a buzzer or other sound producing means 26 mounted in any convenient place, preferably onthe inside of the door.
i The operation is as follows:
Under ordinary'operating conditions this device remains unaffected and inoperative. Should an attempt be made to force the combination lock or remove same, the contact of the screw 14: with the surface of] the door willbe altered, allowing the spring 16 to force the. front plate in, cutting the wire 18 in the shearing arrangement 12, 22, thereby causing the operation of an auxiliary lock.
At the same time the movementof the bell crank also makes a closed circuit for the buzzer or similar device 26, which is intended to disturb a burglar and discourage a icontinuation of his attempt at entry.
It is to be noted that the inertia of the member 13 would be suflicient when subjected toa shock to cut the wire even in case of failure of the spring 16 to sever the wire.
7 The long tube 17 and wire 18 are intended to be arranged around other vulnerable parts of the door locking mechan sm in such a way madeby arranging to have the wire 18 ex- I tend directly toan: ordinary spring bolt so that cutting the wire allows said spring bolt to slideinto a recess in the door frame.
A modification of this device is-shown in Figures 7 to 11 inclusive. Parts identical in 7 form and function in both embodiments of theinvention bear thelsame numerals. The operation of the wire, bell crank, etc., is the same in both forms, the difference being in the method of attachment and the means for cutting the wire. l.
The, plate 27 1s mounted over the usual permutation or time lock by the screws 28,
29, 30. Thescrew SOIis fastened to a moving block 31 which iscarrled by arecessed block 32 which "is fastenedto the'door by a screw 33. The block 31 has a large hole for the tubing and" a small holefor the wire which .registerswith a'similar hole in the block 32 when the block 31 is seated in the recess. Thearrangement of the screws 28 to 30'is such that the block 31 will normally beheld seatedintherecess; 'VVith the wire 18 threaded through these holes to hold the lock open, it will require avery-heavy jar or an attempt to force theqlockto cause therplate 27, screw 30 and block 31 to move outward thereby cutting the wire and releasing the auxiliary lock operating mechanism. In both forms of my device cutting or burning the tube andwireat anygplace will release the wire and allow it to be pulled through the remaining part of the tube thereby operating the emergency lock. In'this case the bell crank 19 is-mounted .on an arm 34: clamped by the block32, as
shown in Figure 11. It is of course ossible to adapt the signaling device to t e bell crank inthis modified form.

o I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with vault doors, in-
emergency lock, "and operating mechanism therefor, consisting of a supporting plate adapted to fasten over the regular lock,
means adapted vto hold said emergency lock in an inoperative position, and means connected with said supporting plate for cutting saidfirst mentioned means andthercby locking said auxiliary lock'when said regular lock is forcibly tamperedwith;
2. In a device of the class described, a door, a lock for the door, an emergency lock, means for operatingsaid emergency lock when theregularlock is abused, consisting of means adapted to hold said emergency lock inoperative, said means being fastened at one end in a tube which can beled to any vulnerable point in the lock operating mechanism of the door, and means-for cut .ting'said wire whereby the emergencylock will be operated to prevent unlawful entry. 3. The combination with an, auxiliary locking means, of means for controlling said eluding the locks therefor, of an additional lock, consisting of a semi-flexible tube, a1
wire threaded through said tube and fastened to one end of the tube, a bracket for holding the other end of said tube, means on said bracket for cutting said'wire when the bracket is jarred or moved, andconnecting means'between said wire and the auxiliary tube, lock restraining means in said tube and means for severing the restraining means to permit operation of said locking mechanism.
5. The combination of a closure, of' a safety locking device therefor, and a tensioned wire Within a tube normally restraining said locking device, said wire and tube being adapted to be disposed over the vulnerable parts of the closure in positions adapted to sever the tube and Wire upon an attempt at forceful entry, I

The combination with a closure and locking means therefor, of a supplemental locking means, and operating means therefor, comprising a Bowden wire extending to the vulnerable parts of the first mentioned locking means for said closure, and means whereby a forceful attempt to unlawfully release said vulnerable parts will result in severing said Bowden wire, thereby operating said supplemental locking means. v
7, In combination with a look, a lock restraining mechanism adapted to normally hold the lock inoperative, comprising a severable tension member attached at one end to the lock mechanism, and a non-compressible member attached to the free end of the tension member adaptedto serve as a strut to normally maintain the tension in said member.
