RAILWAY-TIE REMOVER.
vApplication led October 13, 19226. Serial No. 141,357.
vA still further object of the invention isk to provide means for removing the ballast at Vthe end' of the tie being` removed, to facilitate the removal `of the tie. l
With the foregoing and other objects iiiv iview which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventionresides in the comination and arrangement of parts Vand in the details of construction hereinafter de'- scribedand claimed, it beingunderstood 'that A changes in the precise .embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made withinthe scope of what is claimed, without de arting from the spirit of the invention. eferring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the device showing thedevice in the act of re moving and replacin a tie.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. c
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device. Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
device includes an elongated body portion indicated generally by the reference character 5, the same being substantially oblong in cross section and hollow to receive the bar 6 designed to move longitudinally through the body portion 5.
At each end of the body portion 5 and extending from the lower ksurface thereof, are spaced lugs 7, the spaces between the lugs being equal to the width of the tread of the rail on which the body portion is positioned, so that movement of the body portion 5, transversely of the rails will be absolutely prevented.
This bar 6 is formed with a head 7 that has a vertical rib 8 dovetailed to fit, within the opening of the removable plow 9 shown as positioned at the Vfront end of the bar 6. set screw indicated at 10 extends through the head and has its forward end contacting with the plow to set up'abinding action between the head and plow to'prevent movement of theI positioned. p l
In connection with this construction, it
plow when the same has been might be stated that the plow 9y is removif able and is only used when it is desired to remove the ballast at the end oi the tie, and
which usually lies in the path of tra-vel of the tie which is being slid from its position under the i'ails.
Formed along theupper edge of the bar; 6`
are ratchet teethV 11 that are engaged by the pawls 12 carried at the lower ends of the levers 13, which levers are pivotally mounted between the upstanding ears 14, forming a part of the body portion. 4 n Y As shown, the upper wall of the body portion `5 is partly cut away to expose the ratchet teeth, so that the operator may by glancing through the cut away portions in the upper surface view the action of the pawls. Secured to the head are chains 15 that extend through the head, ythe ends, thereof having connection. with theA forward ends of thev rods 16 that are disposed on opposite sides of the tie being removed, the rear ends of the rods being connected with the chain 17 that has its intermediate portion spiked to the tie being removed` which spike is indicated by the reference character 18.
The ends of this chain -17 when the device is in use, arespiked to the tie which is being placed under the rails, the tie being placed under the rails being indicated by the reference character 19.
In the use of the device, the body portion ispositioned over the rails of a track in a `manner as illustrated by Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, whereupon the chains and rods are positioned as previously described, it being obvious ythat if the ballast rises'to a pointv the bar 6 in the direction of the arrow as indicated in Figure 1.
t will thus be seen that the tie will ybe slowly removed and the new tie `will be gradually moved to its position. under the rails where it 'ma be spiked to the rail in the usual, and *wel known manner@ It might be further stated that ropes or other flexible means such as indicated at 20 connect the pawls and levers in such a way that when the levers are moved to predetermined positions, the pawls are automatically moved to disengage the teeth o'f the bar-6 so that the bar may be readily slid to its position within the bodyportion 5.
From the foregoing detail description it is thought that a further detail description as to the operation of the device is unnecessary.` I claim: y
l. In a device o the character described,
Aa hollow body portionadapted to be positioned on the rails ot' a railway track, a-bar movable through the body portion and having a depending head, a chain carried by the head and adapted 'to operate to remove a tie positioned under the rails, and means for. securing a Ytie to the tie being removed, to cause the last mentioned tie to be positioned under the rails.
2. In a device ot' the character described,
a hollow'` body portion, means `for positioning the body portion on the rails of a rail.-
way track to prevent movement ot the body portion Vtransversely of the rails, a bar mov- 'able through the body portion, said bar having teeth formed on the upper edge thereof, levers carried by the body portion and having vpawls contacting with the teeth to move the bar longitudinally 'of the body portion, means forl transmitting movement` of thejbar to a tie'bemg removed, and means for transmitting moven'icnt of thetie being removed to a tie being positioned under the rails.
Y In a device otjthe character described, a hollow body portion, said body portion adapted to be positioned on the rails of a railway track, a movable bar operating through the body portion, a head formed at one end of the bar, means carried by the body portion and engaging the barfor moving the bar longitudinally of the body portion, a chain connected with the head, rods having connection with Vthe chain, said rods extending Vto points adjacent to one end ot a` tie being removed by thekdeviee, a chain connected with the rods, and said cham adapted to be spiked to a tie replacing the i tie being removed.
4. In a'device of the .character described, a body portion, said body portion adapted to bepositioned on the rails of a railway track, a bar supported by the body portion,
means Yfor moving the bar longitudinally of Y the body portion, a head forming a part of the bar, a plow removably supported on the head, means for securing the head to a tie vsupported under the rails, to move the'tie when the bar is moved, and means for sey curing a tie to the first mentioned` tie to move therewith.
Intestimony that I claim the foregoing'as I have hereto affixed my signature.
my own,
BENJAMIN J. noovna Y
