The invention relates to a' quick releasable light portable derailsuited to a wide ran 'e of rail sections havin an ad'usta'ble road-bed-contacting thrust=receiving membar dividing the vertical wheel thrust with the derail block a quick appliable andqui'ckreleasable adjustable clamping jaw "and other distinctive features pointed out in the following specification or made apparent to those skilled in the art. These structural cl'mracteristics though novel and of value individually are advantageously combined in the preferred form ofinvention shown in the accompanyingdrawings, in which- F 1 is a side elevation of thederail in released position;

,Rapidity and ease of application and release are a. primary characteristic of this derail. Whenonce adjusted for a given rail section, it may be applied thereto or released therefrom, as will be hereinafter explained in detail, mainly by a single rapid n anual movement which is supplemented by bringing power applying means very briefly into play to merely finish the clamping movement or begin the release movement, the application of power being rediv ed to the minimum. As portable 'derails must oftenbe removed and replaced-- usually under conditions requiring hasteand always where speedand ease'of application and release are desirableythis char acteristic is of vital importance.
The derail has a bearing on the top of the rail, a bearing on the road bed and a bearing on the underside of the head of the rail ustable up against the underside of. the rail head and thereby exerting downward. pressure on both of the other bearii'igs and clamping the derail on the rail. The derail illustrated has the derailing member consisting of the body 1 and derail block 2. having usual wheel-derailing contours made as one casting recessed on the underside for lightnessand to provideroom for and to protect moving parts, andan adustable thrust-rece ving road-bed-abutting member, the screw bolt[3, 1: assing down throughthe body and adjustable in'the fixed removable nut 4 thus dividing the vertical wheel thrust with the derail block and pro, vidin for vertical adjustment to suit'rails of heights both greater and less than those shown. The. derail block has in its underside a rail-headreceiving recess which sets down onto the rail head but is wider than the rail head to suit rails of different cross section. A portable derail having a derailing member provided with a derail block and with a body having a bearing on the roadbed, a clamping jaw extending crosswise of the rail, a screw bolt adjustably connected to said clamping jaw, and passing through a slot in the derail body, a forward and a rearward support. for said screw bolt, whereby the screw bolt when released from its forward supportmay, gravity aiding, be thrown along with the jaw downward and rearward to its rearward support.

A portable derail having a detailing block provided with wheel derailing contours and adapted to set down onto a rail head, a clamping jaw mounted on the derail and having railengaging surface, and adjustable means for clamping said jaw against the rail, said means including a spring which at clamping position urges the rail engaging surface against the rail and thereby permits the adjusting means to be backed oii somewhat without releasing the rail clamping action.

A portable derail having a screw bolt extending down through said derail and screw-threaded throtwh astationar nut a D n I o therein, a rail clamping aw carried by said screw bolt, and'a sprlng washer 1nterposed "between said nut and jaw and at clamping POSllIlOll urging said aw toward that posi tion and thereby permitting the screw bolt to be backed oil somewhat without releasing the clamping action. 7
10. A portable derail having a derailing member having a bearing on the top of the rail,;a bearing on the roadbed, and a bear-' ing on the underside of the rail head,"and means mounted on the derailing member for forcing the last bearing up and the other two down to clamp the derail on the rail.

12. A portable derail having a derailing memberprovided with an adjustable railclamping jaw adapted to be forced against the undersidesof the rail head, and an adjustable roadbed-contacting 'wheeLthrust' receiving member mounted in the derailing member at one side of thetrack.
13. A portable derail having a derailing member provided with a derail block adapted co set down on to the railand with a thrust transmitting member bearing on the roadbed, and rail clamping means mounted on said derailing member between them and adapted to action the near side of the rail.

screw bolt'having a bearing for rotation in the derailing member, passing through the same into said recess and having screwthre'aded operative connection"with said clamping jaw, anda cam incline on which said jaw may be caused-to ride by rotation of said bolt to clamp the derail to the rail.

A portable derail having a wheel-derailing block'an-d having in its underside a recess adapted to set down over rail heads a of various cross section, a screw-bolt constituting a road'bed abutment adjustable in the body of the derail, a clamping jaw mounted in the derail-and having rail engaging" surface, an adjusting screw bolt screw-threaded'intosaid jawifor moving it into clamping relation to. the rail, the ad justing screw bolt having a slotted handle, and a spring acting on the clamping jaw in clamping position to urge it against the rail thereby permitting the adjusting bolt to be eased off without impairing the rail clamp ing action, the roadbed abutment screw bolt having an eye with which the slot of the handle may be brought into registration to enable the clamped derail to be locked on the rail.

A portable derail having a derail block adapted to set down onto the rail and a body extending transversely'away from the rail at one side thereof and having at a distance from the rail an adjustable road bed abutment bolt passing through said body, a rail-clamping jaw movably mounted in the derail body, a bolt passing down through said body and screw-threaded into said jaw for adjusting the same with respect to said body and to the rail to clamp the derail on the rail on the side toward the road bed abutment and means for thereafter looking said bolts against relative rotation.

A portable derail comprising a derailing member having a derail block provided with wheel-derailing contours and having a depending flange for contact with one side of the rail head, and adjacent said flange a rail-headmcceiving recess wider than the rail-head, a clamping jaw extending crosswise of the rail, mounted on the derailing member on the other side of the rail and having its rail-clamping portion below the rail head, and adjustable means for moving said rail clamping portion upward and railward toward said depending flange and against the underside of the rail head to clamp the derail onto the rail.

A portable derail carrying loosely mounted thereon a floating rail-clamping jaw and having cam incline surface on which the jaw abuts, a screw bolt having supporting bearing means on the derail and operatively connected to the jaw for moving the jaw along the cam incline surface and there by camming it against the rail to clamp. the derail thereon.
23. A portable derail having a body having a bearing on the roadbed and a derail block adapted to set down onto rail heads of diflerent cross section and having an upward and railward cam incline on the underside of the body of the derail, arailclamping jaw having a portion adapted to.
contact with said cam-incline, and a clamping bolt mounted in hearings, in the derail body and having screw-threaded connection with the clamping jaw, the axis ofthe bolt intersecting the plane of the cam incline.

A portable derail having a derail block, and a body having a bearing 011 the road bed, a clamping jaw having a cam contact portion and a rail contact portion and carrying loosely in its body a nut held against rotation, a screw bolt mounted for rotation in bearings in the derail body and extending down freely through a hole in the jaw body and screw-threaded through said nut, and a fixed cam surface on the derail body, with which the cam contact portion of the clamping jaw cooperates when the screw bolt is turned, whereby the rail contact portion is cammed against the rail to clamp the derail thereon.

A portable derail having a derail block provided with wheel-derailing 'contoursiand two sets of camming and rail clamping means located in a recess in the underside of the derail and means for operating both sets at once to cam the movable members of both sets against the rail at points spaced lengthwise thereof to clamp the derail to the rail.
receiving recess of variable 'size to suit rails of different cross section and a bearing on the road bed, a floating jaw having abutment surfaces spaced lengthwise of the raii for camming contact respectively with correspondingly spaced surfaces on the underside of the body of the derailing member inclined upward and railward, and rail-headcontact surfaces spaced lengthwise of the rail, and means for supporting the floating jaw from the derail adjustably.

A portable derail having a derailing member having a derail block and a body having a bearing on the roadbed and in the underside of the body a recess and railward cam inclines abutting thereon and spaced apart lengthwise of the rail, a clamping having at the end distant from the rail correspondingly spaced abutting surfaces adapted to slide on the cam inclines and at its railward end rail-abutting clamping surface, a screw boltsupported in the body of the derail, extending down through a slot in said body extending crosswise of the rail and having screw-threaded connection with the jaw, and additional jaw supporting means on the body of the derail.
