OUTLET VALVE.
Application filed February This invention relates to outlet valves, especially adapted lor use on tank carsA and similar containers.
The object ot the invention is to provide a valve for this purpose which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, direct in its action, and easy to operate; and more especially to provide a .valve tor tank cars, which may be opened or closed from the otitside of the car Without opening the dome, or otherwise gaining access to the interior of the container,
By virtue of the construction herein described, the valve may be closed after the car has been filled, or opened to empty the car in tar less time than the style ot valve heretofore used. It is strong and durable, and direct positive pressure is applied both in opening and closingthe same,
The specific construction ot the :invention and the advantages thereof will be more tully explained in the following detailed description, which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred form thereof.

The invention is illustrated in connection with a portion oi a tank car or similar container 10, having an outlet 11 in its bottom. Leadingl :troni the outlet is a substantially cylindrical housing l2 having an outwardly turned 'Harige 13 at its upper end, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the bottoni oi the container, as shown at 14. The interior of the housing 12 formed at its up-V per end with a conical il'ace 15 for receiving the conical lower tace ot the valve 16, and a bushing 1T secured in the upper portion oi" the housing 12 terms a seat tor the valve.
The valve 16 is formed with an ul'nvardly projecting stem 18, 'which extends through an opening in a yoke 19, and `is secured therein by a rivet 2() or the like. The end ot the yoke 19 is pivoted to ears 2l integral with, or 'fastened to, the flange 13, so that the valve and yoke may be swung inwardly, indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 3.

The interior of the housing l2 is formed -at one side with a flat Wall, as shown at 22,
or vertical rib is formed on the outside, in which is 'formed a dove-tailed channel 23 for receiving and guiding a vertical rack bar 24e. In case thc vertical rib is formed on the outside oi: the housing 12, then the lower portions 39 and ile() ot' the housing are enlarged so as to permit the insertion or Withdrawal ot the rack bar 24 therethrough in assembling` or taking apart. The inner Ytace oi' this rack bar is formed with ears'25, which are connected by a link 26 to ears 27 which project downwardly from the bottoni face ot' the valve 16. The opposite tace ot the rack bar 24. is formed with teeth v28, which are adapted to mesh with teeth 29 'formed on a transversely disposed mandrel 30. The housing 12 is enlarged at one side, as shown at 3l, and formed With a transverse bore 32 in which the mandrel 30 is rotatably inounted. The housing is also provided With a stalling box 33 surrounding the outer portion ofthe mandrel to prevent possible leakage.
The outer end of the mandrel is square or polygonal, as shown at 34, and adapted to receive a handle 35 by means of which the mandrel may be rotated to open or close the valve 16. The handle 35 is preferably made easily and quickly removable. A disk 36 mounted on the end portion 34 ot the mandrel inside ot' the handle 35, and is provided With a series ot holes 37, so that Whatever the position of the disk, one of the openings 37 Will be in position to be connected by a car seal to an eye 38 formed on the adjacent part ot thefhousing 12. Other eyes 38a may also be. provided on the housing for attaching small chains, which Willbe connected to removable parte to prevent loss ot' the same.
The lower end of thel housing 12 is internally threaded, as at 39, so that a pipe or hose may be connected thereto for discharging the contents of the container. During transit, a cap may be inserted in the end of the housing as an additional precaution against loss ot the contents. It is desirable to provide the lower end ot' the housing l2 with an external flange 40, which may be used in connection with improved coupling devices forV connecting a pipe thereto.
From the foregoing description, it Will be understood that the valve may be opened or closed by simply rotating the mandrel 30.
Thus, a strong, direet and positive pressure is applied both in opening or closing, and the valve operating means is always aoeessihle. lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that various modiiieations may he made in the details of Construction, and in the arrangement oit various parts thereof Without any material departure from the salient features ot the invention as expressed in the Claims.
That is claimed is:
l. In combination, a housing adapted to he secured to a liquid Container and having an outlet passage therethrough, a valve adapted to Close said passage, said housing being formed at one side with a longitudinal channel, and a transverse bore adjoining the channel, a raeli har guided in said Channel, means connecting the rack har with the valve `for operating the latter', a mandrel in said here and provided with teeth meshing with the rack har, the overall diameter ot the toothed portion oil the mandrel being not greater than the bore, so that the mandrel may he inserted endvvibe into the here and retained therein hy the teeth of the rack, and means for rotating the mandrel to advance the raek and open the valve.
2. In combination, a housing adapted to he seeured to a container and having an out` let passage therethrough, a valve for elosing the inner end ot said passage and formed with anl iinvardly projecting stem, a yoke pivoted at one side. ol' the passage and secured to said stem, said housing' being formed with a longitudinal dovetailed Channel in its inner itaee and having an extension outside said channel with a transverse bore therein, a rack har reeiproeahle in said Channel, a linl; eonneeting the rack bar to the valve, a mandrel in said bore having teeth meshing with said rack har, and means Connected with said mandrel for rotating the saine to open or Close the valve.
3. In Combination, a housing adapted to he secured to a Container and having an outlet passage therethrough, a valve adapted to close said passage, said housing being formed with a longitudinal dovetailed ehannel in its inner tace and having an extension outside said channel with a transverse bore therein, a rack har guided for reeiproeation in said Channel, a link eonneeting the rael; har to the valve, a mandrel in said here and provided with teeth meshing` with the teeth of the rack bar, and n'ieans connected ivilh the mandrel for rotating the same to reciprocate the raeh bar, whereby to open or close the valve.
4t. In combination, a housing adapted to he secured to a container and having an ontlet passage therethrough, a valve for closing said passage, a rack har guided for move ment longitudinally of the housing, a linl; connecting the rack har to the valve, a inandrel having teeth meshing with the teeth ol: the rack bar, means for rotating the mandrel to aetuate the raelc har, `whereby to open or close the valve, and means on the mani'lrel and the adjacent part of the housing to which a ear seal may he attached.
5. In eomhination, a housing` adapled to he secured to a container and having an oullet passage therethrough, a valve lor een-A trolling said passage, a mandrel rotatably mounted transversely ol' the housing', means Operable upon rotation of the mandrel to open or Close the valve, a. disk keyed to said mandrel and having a series ot holes near its` outer edge, and an eye on the adjacent part ot the housing and adapted, in eonjnnetion with one ot said holes, toy reeeive a ear seal.
