UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESLIE R. N. CARVALHO, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CLOSURE SERVICE COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
'nEcEr'rAoLE CLOSURE.
Application filed July 5, 1923. Serial No. 649,576.
My invention relates to receptacles and" closures therefor. An objectof the inven tion is to provide an improved form of closure or cap, simple in construction, inex- 6 pensive to manufacture, which may be repeatedly applied to the container, and which is free from various defectsfound in clo sure devices at present in use.
It is also an object to provide highly effective yet simple retaining means for a closure or cap, said means including circumferentially spaced lugs stamped inward- 1y from the metal making up the cap and so located that they present a maximum degree of resistance to yielding under pressure.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation of a receptacle and closure constructed in accordance with the present invention, part of the receptacle being broken away.
Figure -2 is a top plan view ,of the closure or cap.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cap on a larger scale, parts being broken away.
Figure 4 is a part sectional plan of a portionof the cap. i
The closure or cap comprises a cover portion 6 and a skirt orflange portion 7. The flange portion is formed with a circumferential rib 8 or apron which is preferably located a short distance above the lower edge 9 of the flange and has an oblique top ortion. The lower portion of the skirt 7, Beneath oblique top of the rib 8, is bent inwardly and then outwardly to provide a flat annular surface 10 at the bottom of the cap. In other words, the lower portion is folded upon itself, the margin of the lower fold terminating at a point inwardly from the rib periphery to prevent contact with a users fingers. At intervals along the rib 8, the metal is bent inwardly to provide in-.
vides a tight seal when the cap is placed in position on the container. *By forming the rib 8 and the holdin ribs 11 from a portion of the material aiove the lower edge of the skirt 7 and separated from said edge, the strength of said ribs is increased as compared with the usual constructions in which the lower margin of the skirt is shaped to form means for holding the cap on the contamer. Moreover, with the present construction, the lower side of the cap presents a smooth unbroken surface '10.
Modifications may be resorted to within the splrit and scope of my invention.
l/Vhat I claim is:
1. A sheet metal cap comprising a cover portion and a flange portion projecting downwardly therefrom, said flange portion being bent outwardly to form an annular rib, the bottom portion of the flange bein bent outwardly horizontally beneath sai rib closely adjacent thereto and parallel therewith to provide a smooth substantially flat annular double fold surface at the bottom of said flange.
2. A sheet metal cap comprising a cover portion and a flange portion projecting downwardly therefrom, said flangeportion being bent outwardly to form an annular rib, the lower side of which is horizontally disposed, the bottom portion of the flange. being bent outwardly horizontally beneath said rib to provide a smooth substantially fiat annular two-ply surface at the bottom of said flange, said rib havin portions thereof bent inwardto form holding lugs at. intervals along said rib, said bent inward portions so shaped as to maintain the rib in substantial continuity; I
3. A closure for a receptacle comprising a cover portion and a depending skirt or flange portion, said flange portion being shaped to provide a circumferential rib, a strengthening horizontally disposed fold under said rib, and forming a substantial integral part of said rib, said rib being slitted at intervals, and sections of the rib between adjacent slits being bent inwardly to form holding ribs for attachment to a receptacle.
4. A closure .for a receptacle comprising a cover portion and a depending skirt or flange portion, said flange portion being shaped to provide a circumferential rib, the lower side of whichis reenforced by a fold of the margin of said flange upon itself, said vhorizontally disposed annular reenforcing strip forming the bottom surface of the cap.
5. The combination of a receptacle having a neck portion provided with external spiral threads spaced at intervals around the neck,
and a cap forming a closure for said re-" ceptacle, said cap comprising a cover portion and a flange portion, the latter provided with an annular rib intermediate the top and bottom of the flange portion, said rib com-- prising portions projectin outwardly from the body of the flange an alternating with inbent holding portions, said holding portions positioned to cooperate with said threads for holding the cap on the receptacle, the portion of the flange beneath said rib being bent outwardly at the lower edge of the rib to form a smooth unbroken bottom surface for the cap.
6. A closure for a receptacle comprising a cover portion and a depending flan e portion, said flange portion being shaped adjacent its lower extremity to provide a circumferential apron horizontally disposed,
said apron consisting of an oblique top por-'-- tion, and a double walled horizontal flat lower portion, said apron being slitted at intervals to provide segregated portions, said portions being bent inwardly to form holding lugs for attachment to a receptacle.
7. A closure for a receptacle comprising a cover portion and a depending flange portion, a part of said flange portion being shaped to provide a circumferential apron horizontally disposed, consisting of an oblique top portion and a double folded horizontal flat lower portion, said lower portion formed by bending the margin of said apron inwardly beneath said oblique portion, and again bending the margin so as to be disposed under said inwardl bent portion, thereby forming a double fol ed annular flat surface, and holding means formed in Said flat surface for attachment of said closure to a receptacle.
8. A closure for a receptacle comprising a cover portion and a depending flange portion shaped adjacent its lower extremity to provide a circumferential apron, said apron comprising an oblique laterally extending ortion folded inwardly at its outer edge to orm ahorizontal portion, and a ain folded back on itself, forming a two-pay flooring for said apron, and interrupted screw threads. formed fromsaid apron for engagement of said closure with a receptacle.
Signed at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, this 30th day of June,
LESLIE R. N. GARVALHO.
