RAILWAY DUMP CAR.

This invention relates to railway dump cars. to-wit: cars designed for carrying lad incY in subdivided form. and which, for the sake of adaijitingr them to discharge their lading' by gravity, have certain portions of their bottom. surfaces consistingof doors movable to open or closed position at will` and other portionsthereof in the form of inclines which direct the material to the doors and insure substantially complete evacuation in response to the mere act of opening;l the doors.
One object of the present invention is to provide an improved assembly between side walls, transverse bottom frame members.,` and side wall`y inclines` whereby the said elements may stand in mutually sustaining relation each to the others. Accordingly, one feature of the invention consists in constructingr the transverse bottom frame members from channel section beams. placed with their webs vertical and their flanges horizontal, riveting' gusset plates to the backs thereof as well as to the stakes at the sides of the car. and providing` the side incline plates of the hopper bottom with vertical end flanges which overlap the faces of the channel, members opposite to those faces which ieceive the `'usz'se-t plates, as well as overlapping' the gusset plates and stakes; the outer ends of the horizontal flanges of the channel members beine' out away to receive the said flanges on the incline plates, and said incline plate flanges beine' riveted to all of said parts and constituting angle braces which stiften the lioints between them, resistance of stresses being mainly in the plane of the incline plate A further feature. incident to this part of the invention re lates to the castings which provide the pintlc bearings for the main doors and the bearers for the shafts which wind the liftinnl 'chains of doors, said casting' bein;Y produced with a pair of cheeks providing; a y pair of spaced bea rings for the doorpintle; a broad uinvardly presented face by which thev casting bears beneath and is secured to the body o f the car, terminating in a bevel throuirh which. it bears against and is riveted le incline of the hopper bottom; and

Preferably the castings are secured beneath the main1 door plate to provide pintle bearings for the auxiliary door,
and these are recessed back oit their pintle assembly of the sides and bottoms of the Cars bearings to admit the curved tail-piece ot the auxiliary door when the door is closed, thereby avoiding;` Vthe necessity tor shorten nur the tail-piece to an undesirable extent; and the taillpiece itself may be provided with ar recess ot dimension corresponding;A approximately to the thickness of the pintle castings ,in order that it may be given even a greater protecting dimension on either side ot the casting'.

It has always been a problem. in gondola cars or cars of the type with which this in vention deals to develop secure and lasting with their bracing members, and the present invention takes advantage ot tunctional members or members concerned with the operation ot the car, .in the development of iinproved conditions in this part ot the car, by making the transverse member ot the undericrame or bearer 5l of channel section. with its web 8 vertical and its flanges 8" and 3 horizontal; rivetingn the ends oiE the said bearer to the stakes 15; riveting the `ejnsset members lt not only to the stakes as usual. but also directly to the channel meinbers 8 and preferably to the backs ot' said channel members; cutting away the ends ot the horizontal iianges 8b, S" ot the channel member. as shown in Figure 2; and causing vertical attaching tlangges (iT on the lateral hopper inclines 6 to lap upon and to be riveted directly to the web 8 and to the stake 15 while maintaining the inclination which the side inclines 6 are required to have in service, and therefore7 in a position which causes the inclined plates to serve as e toctive angle braces between the sides and the transverse underffraine members, and. in such service. to receive stresses which arcI largely in the planes of the plates and theretore in the direction to be resisted most ettectively.

I claim:
1. In a hopper bottom car, a trimm/'cree bottom 'trame member having! a vertical. web, a dump door, and a pintle bearingr casting' for mounting; saidy dump door in controlling); relation to the hopper bottom; said casting' boinaformed with an upwardly presented seating' tace and a. vertical flange overlappingand attached to the web ot the trame member.
2. In a hopper bottom car` a bottom traine meniber having` a vertical tace. a dump door, and a pintle bearing' casting for mounting said dump door in controlling' relation to the hopper bottom; said castingr beine;
formed with an upwardly presented seating` tace and a vertical flange lapping upon and attached to the vertical tace of the trame member; said casting alsoh'aving a depression in its said seatingv face, providing: an upwardly opening shaft-bearing, and said attaching` flange having an openingr above the plane ot said seating tace and in regis; try with said shaft bearing, tacilitatii'ig introduction of a shaft into said bearing.
