DENTAL' CHUCK.
.pplieation led March 20, 1926. VSerialNo. 96,329.
This invention relates to improvements in chucks for Vdental instruments, the vgeneral object of the invention being to provide means for frictionally holding the bits or burrs in the rotary member or chuck of the drilling apparatus and in such a manner that the bit can be easily removed.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in Vthe combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully.7 described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying),` drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a view partly in section, showing a portion of a drilling apparatus with the improvement thereon. Y Y
Figure 2 is a view of the chuck or rotary member, with parts in section, showing a drill therein.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the lower Figure 4 is a view of a bit.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view showing a bit in the chuck.
Figure .6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
As shown in these views. I make the bore of the chuck or rotary member 1 of the drilling apparatus :of two diameters, the inner part 2 being of less diameter than the outer part 3 so that a smallk shoulder 4 is formed at the junction ofthe two parts, This shoulder is slightly tapered, as shown` The bit 5 used with this device is provided with a slot 6 in its chuck engaging end which makes this end of the bit forked. the prongs being resilient so that as the bit is vpushed into the bore,l it willslide freely through the large part 3 until it strikes the shoulder 4, when the prongs will be pressed together by the shoulder so that the extremities of the prongs will enter the small part 2 and thus the bit will be firmly and securely held in the chuck. However, the bit can be easily pulled from the chuck wheny it is to be ref moved, as theV prongs 7 will give inwardly under the pulling strain and thus permit the bit to easily pass from4 the small part of the bore. i Y
The member l is carried in the usual handle part 7 of the drilling apparatus and Vhas itsreduced end 8V passing through the erica.;
be drawn Vfrom the chuck with but little effort. Y
liVhile the improvement is mainly v1ntended for dental apparatus, 1t w1llof course, be understood Vthat it can be used on other apparatus.
It 1s thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novelV features of my invention will be readily apparent. p
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the y so scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is z,-
1.'In` combination with a chuck having a bore of two diameters Vwiththe largerpart of the bore opening out at the end of the chuck, a removable bit havingresilient prongs for entering the bore, the prongs being pressed together when they enter the small part of the bore.
2. Incombination with a chuck having av bore of two diameters with the large part of the bore opening out at the end of the chuck,
the two parts .forming a shoulder at their junction, a removable bit vhaving a slot in its chuck engaging. end which forms a pair of resilient prongs which are pressed toward each other by the shoulderwhen the bit is forced into the chuck so that the prongs will enter the small part of the bore.
In. testimony whereof I affix my signature.
wILLmM-F. DUNLOP.
