HOUSEHOLD ARTICLE. I
Application filed April 28, 1923. Serial No. 635,292.
This invention relates to improvements in household articles and has for an object the provision'of a novel form and arrangement of a clothes rack.
An object of the invention is the provision of a clothes rack which may be readily folded or collapsed so as to occupy a minimum amount ofspace, but which will provide considerable hanging space when arranged for use.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the clothes rack in set up position.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the clothes rack partly collapsed.
Figure 4 is an enlargedsectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The invention constitutes a clothes rack which comprises a top section 38, a bottom section 39 and an intermediate section 40, each of which includes spaced standards 41, 42 and 43 respectively. The standards 41 have their upper ends connected by bars 44 and to provide for this the ends of these bars have rigidly secured thereto corner plates 45. These plates include spaced ears 46 between which the upper ends or the standards 41 are pivotally secured in a manner'to permit them to fold inwardly.
The standards 41 and 43 are connected by a hinge joint 47, which joint also includes spaced ears for receiving the adjacent ends of the standards 41 and 43, while the hinge is offset. The hinge is cut away to provide an opening 48 through which passes the ends of a brace bar 49, there being one of these bars at each side of the rack. The bars 49 carry at their outer ends oppositely disposed arms 50 which act as stops to limit the outward movement of the standards 41 and 43. An offset centering block 51 is provided for each of the bars 49.
The standards 42 and 43 are connected by substantially T-shaped brackets 52 to which are connected the opposite ends of spaced bars 53. The brackets 52 include oppositely disposed spaced ears 54 and the adjacent ends of the standards 42 and 43 are pivotally secured between these ears as shown at 55 so as to permit these standards to be folded inwardly upon the opposite edges of the bars 53. The standards are connected by bars orrungs 56 which provide hanger bars.
iVhen set up for use, the rack provides spaced substantially rectangularv frames which include vertical standards, top' and bottom connecting bars. and intermediate brace bars. In addition, the bottom bars 53 are connected to the standards '42 by means.
w y ,507 i OFF CE When in thisfposition, the arms 50 ofthe brace bars 49' will overlap the bracketsi45 and 52. By breaking the joints of the inclined brace 57, the standards 42 may be folded inwardly beneath the'bars 53 so that the rack will then be compactly arranged for insertion within the frame 13 of the,
table.
description and accompanying drawings, that the invention provides an exceedingly to permitthe sections so forming the'rack as to be folded one upon the other whereby It will be apparent from the foregoing the entire rack may be compactly stored in a confined area. a
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right isherein reserved to make such. changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. 7
Having described the invention what is claimed is:-
A collapsible clothes rack comprising a I pair of spaced parallel frames each frame comprising a top section, a bottom section and an intermediate section, means hingedly connecting said sections,'the hinged cons,
nections of the top and intermediate secand being limited in outward movement by tions being each formed with an opening, said arms, oppositely inclined collapsible a brace for each frame i extending freely braces each pivotally connected at opposite 10 through said openings and being provided ends to the intermediate and lower sections at its ends'with oppositely disposed arms, and rungs extending between said frames. said topand intermediate sections being In testimony whereof I affix my signature;
