Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
THOMAS COLDWVELL, OF NEWVBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAWN-MOWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,626, dated April 27, 1875; application filed April 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs CoLDwELL, of New-burg, in the county of Orange and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Mowers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification,
in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front end of a machine containing my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the same upon a line passing from front to rear.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable the ready adjustment of the edge of the cutter-bar toward or from the wiper; and, to this wiper B, is placed a cutter-bar, O, which extends between the side bars A and A, and at each end is provided with-a vertical arm, 0, that is pivoted at a point just above said bar 0, to or upon the inner face of one of said bars A. The upper end of each arm O, which at that point is reduced in width, is provided with a threaded opening that extends horizontally from front to rear, and contains a screw, D, which has its ends pointed or rounded, and at one of said ends has a squared head, 61. The screw D is contained between two lugs, a and a, which limit its longitudinal motion Without interference with its freedom of rotary or vertical motion. As arranged it will be seen that, by turning the screws D and D within the upper ends of the arms 0 and C, the latter will be moved toward the front or rear, and the lower ends of said arms, with the cutter-bar 0, will be moved in an opposite direction; so that by such adjustment a cutter, E, attached to said bar 0 may be moved toward or from the wiper B untiljust the proper space is left between said parts for their perfect operation.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- In combination with the revolving wiper B, the cutter-bar (3 provided with the vertical pivoted arms 0 and O, and the screws D and D fitted within said arms, and extending between the lugs to and a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of April, 1875.
THOS. GOLDWELL.
