Our invention relates to improvements in jigs for casting metal beaings and has particular reference to a which maj.7 be used to advantage in casting bearings in various articles, but which is designed especially for casting Babbitt bearings in cylinder blocks of internal combustion engines, our purpose being to provid-'e which is simple in construction, relativelyY ,cheap and easjT to manufacture. which is compact andv capable ot' being quickly and ensi-ljT manijfnulated, which is adjustable to accommodate bearings ot different lengths, which includes selt contained means tor securing it in operative position upon an article to be supplied with a bearing, which ot such construction that Babbitt or other metal may be poured therein with facility, and which includes means whereby a minimum amount ot roughness is lett upon a poured hearing to be dressed oil.
Our inventive idea is capable oi' embodiment in differ-ent mechanical structures, certain of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that the structures shown are intended merel.;7 as disclosures ot the essential features and novel characteristics of our invention in certain preferred t'orms and that its scope is as defined in the appended claims.

Slidably mounted on mandrel l0 below the enlargement 2a is a sleeve 30 provided with a handle 32 and having a semi-circularly shaped upward extension 3a thereon which extension is disposed oppositely with respect to enlargement 9.4L and terminates in longitudinall/` extending flat ' faces 36, 36 which slidably engage the tacos 287 28 of enlargement 247 said sleeve 30 being' argot constantly towards its uppermostI limit of sliding movement on mandrel 10 by an expansion coil spring 38 which surrounds said mandrel between said sleeve i' i the collar 12 and reacts trom the latter against the former.
In the yuse ot our improved jig just described sleeve 30 is moved by means ot handle 32 downwardL on mandrel 10 against the torce ot spring 88 until the lower tace ot band 16 and the upper tace oit the entension 34 are spaced apart a distance somewhat greater than the length of the part in which a bearing' is to be casted. The jigl then is applied to the part--a cylinder block for example-in which a bearing is to be castedby engaging the lower face oil band 16 with one end ot the part 42 that is to receive the bearing and releasing sleeve 30, so that spring 38 may force the upper tace ot extension 34 into engagement with an oppo site end of the part that is to receive the bearing7 the jig thus being clamped and retained in place upon the bearing receiving part by said spring. Usually bolt receiving openings 44 are formed in the bearing receiving part adjacent to the semi-circularly shaped bearing receiving recess 46 therein, and by using the outer tace ot enlargement 24 adjacent to the tlat faces 28, 2S thereot2 as guides the jig may be positioned by means of these holes to dispose the portion ot mandrel 10 between the band 16 and the upper end of extension 34 concentric and spaced with respect to recess 46, it being understood that for a given size ot bearing to he casted mandrel 1() will be ot a diameter somewhat less than the diameter ot the rew cess 46, so that when the fiat faces 2S, 26 are arranged in abutting relation with the outer face of the bearing receiving part to either side ot the recess 46 therein, a semicircularly shaped cavity will remain between said mandrel and the part, said cavity being closed at its lower endbv the upper end ot extension 34, at its sides by the tacos 28, 28 of enlargement 24, and partially closed at its top by the lower edge ot enlargement 14 and band 16, oriiice 2O thus remaining the sole means whereby molten metal may be introduced into or whereby it may escape trom cavity 46.
With our operatively associated with a. bearing receiving part 42 just described and as clearly shown in Fig. 2, molten Babbitt or other metal is poured into the hopper provided by band 16 and the upper end ot the enlargement 14 of mandrel 10 and allowed to flow through oriiice 26 into the cavity 46 until the latter is completely tilled. After an elapse of suliicient time to permity the metal to harden the sleeve 30 is moved downward on mandrel 10 by means oit handle 32 until the upper end ol extension 34 is spaced somewhat from the lower end of the part 42, it being noted in this connection that when the upper end ot extension 34 has been moved below the lower end oit ei'ilargen'ient 24 the sleeve 30 may be rotated to engage the upper end oit said extension beneath said enlargement whereby the sleeve 30 may be locked against upward movement on mandrel 10. lWhen extension 34 has been disengaged trom enlargement 24 the entire jig' is given an upward movement by means of handle 12 with the result that any surplus metal remainingl in the hopper at the upper end of the mandrel is broken away trom the metal filling cavity 46 at the upper end ot orifice 20, leaving said cavity tilled with an accurately casted bearing having only a. minimum amount of roughness at its upper end to be dressed oit, it having been found in practice that by having the inclined upper face 22 of enlargement 14 intersect the side of mandrel 10 adjacent to orifice 2O slightly above the lower face ot band 16 the surplus metal in the hopper will be broken away trom the bearing` at said point ot intersection rather than within the limits ot the casted bearing.

Band 16 is provided with an inclined slot 52 which receives a pin 54 projecting from the inner tace o't' band 4S.y so that upon rotation ot said band 48 about band 16 in one direction said band 48 will be moved, as a result of the cam action between said pin and slot connection to the position shown in Figure 6 with its lower edge disposed below the lower edge of band 16. while upon rotation thereof in an opposite direction said band. will be moved to a position with its lower edge flush with the lower edge oit band 16, a handle 56 on said band 46 providing convenient means ot l* manipulating same.

A bearing casting comprising a cy lindrical mandrel having a hopper at its upper end terminating in a discharge orifice adjacent to the side oli said mandrel, a horizontally extending lateral surface on said mandrel near its upper end for Contact with an end surface of a bearing receiving machine part, an enlargement', on said mandrel having a longitudinally extending surface for Contact with another surface ot a bearing receiving machine part, a member longitudinally movable on said mandrel, and having a horizontally extending lateral surface for contact with the other end surface of a bearing receiving machine part, and means constantly urging said member towards the upper end ot' said mandrel, said member being rotatable whereby its lateral surface may be engaged beneath the lower end or said enlargement.

A bearing casting comjn'ising a cylindrical mandrel having an enlargement at its upper end.,l a band surrounding said enlargement and cooperating with the same to provide a hopper having a discharge orifice opening adjacent to the side of the mandrel, a sen'iicircnlarly shaped enlargement on said mandrel below said band, a sleeve slidable on said mandrel below said enlargement, a semieircularly shaped upward extension on said sleeve having surfaces slidably engaging suriaces of said enlargement, a collar on the lower end of said mandrel, and an expansion coil spring disposed between said collar and said sleeve urging the latter constantly towards the upper end oit the mandrel.
9. A bearing casting comprising a mandrel and means carried by said mandrel adjustable whereby bearings may be casted by said with or without end flanges.

A. bearing casting comprising a mandrel having a hopper at the upper end thereo'lz terminating in a discharge orifice adjacent to the side ot said mandrel, a hori zontally extending lateral surface on said mandrel near its upper end. a sleeve longitudinally movable along said mandrel and having a horizontally extending lateral surtace below said first mentioned lateral surface, and a pair or bands one of which surrounds thc part having said first mentioned lateral surface and the other oi' which surrounds said sleeve, said bands being adjustable to dispose their adjacent end surfaces flush with and also inwardly with respect to said iirst mentioned lateral surface and the lateral surface of said sleeve.
