VANITY CASE.
Application filed .Tune 24, 1925.
This invention relates to a compact holder comprising a case and cover preferably hinged together and a compact backing member in the form of a flat dish which has the general configuration of the said case into which it is designed to lit. The case is formed with upwardly and laterally extending sides, and the backing is formed with a lateral projection or projections from the edge thereof for engaging the inside of said sides to hold'it therein whereby backings of various sizes may be accommodated in the case of a standard size. The cover is formed with an annular upstanding edge for engagement in the closed position of the cover, with the upper edge and the said projection of said backing for holding the backing against -movement in the case when the cover is closed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form of compact holder with certain modifications thereof embodying the invention, in which- Fig. 1is an elevation view of the vanity box of my invention showing the cover opened and showing the case and the backing thereon in mid-section;
'Fig. 2 is a vertical mid-section in part of the backing with the compact therein showing said backingas having formed at the edge thereof on this point a lateral projection which serves'to engage the bottom of an inturned edge of the casing;

and adapted to conform in shape to the interlor of a vanity case having a correspondingly shaped interior. In this backmg or holder is provided a compact of powder or cosmetic which fills the holder to its brim and it has no lateral projection;

In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings is shown the casing 1 which has ,a fiat bottom 2 and sides 3 which taper or curve upwardly and outwardly along the upper edge of which is formed an annular channel 5, the upper member of which forms an inwardly extending fiat edge 6 about the casing. At the hinge 8 there is fitted to the casing 1 a cover 10 whose outwardly extending edge 11 fits closely to the inner side of said edge 6 and with which edge 6 the projection 12 on said edge 11 opposite the hinge 8 serves as a snap opening and closing cover retaining means. The flap 14 formed near the projection 12 serves as a thumb engaging means for opening and closing the cover.
l Vithin the casing 1 there is provided a removable compact backing 18 formed of metal and having a shape substantially conforming to the inside of the :said casing 1. Said backing 18 is of such height that when it is in the casing 1 its upper edge will come to about the bottom of said channel member 5. Said backing 18 has formed thereon at one point on its edge as by stamping an inwardly extending projection 20 whichserves to hold the compact 19 insaid backing and whenthe cover 10 is closed the edge 11 thereoi will ,bear against the top edge of the ,side 3 atone ormore points, whereby said backing 18 with the compact .19 therein will be kept against movement and rattling in its casing.
In Fig. 7 is shown a backing or holder 18 which is dish shaped. that is, it is of comparatively shallow depth, has a substantially flat bottom and has curved sides which extend upwardly and outward-1y .and terminate in a circular rim to the top of which rim is provided a filling 19 of powder or cosmetic, the formed lips at the edge being omitted as not necessary in that embodiment.
In Fig. 8 is shown the backing 18 as having formed at its edge inwardly extending projection 21 and outwardly extending projection 22 which is formed to extend over a considerable are along said edge to insure contact with said edge 11 of the cover, particularly when a portion of said edge has been cut away to form said thumb piece 14 for the movement of said cover; and
In Fig. 9 there is shown backing 18 as having iormed thereon a plurality of out wardly extending projections 22 for insuring contact with said. edge 11.
While I have shown and described and have pointed out in the annexed claims certain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a Vanity box, a case having upwardly extending sides, inwardly projecting edges on said sides, a cover for said case having edges projecting thereirom fitting closely within said inwardly projecting edge of said case, and a compact carrying backing in said case having its upper edges formed to insure contact with said projecting edge of said cover, whereby when said cover is closed said backings of varying sizes are held firmly in the vanity box.
2. In a vanity box, a case having upwardly extending sides, inwardly projecting edges on said sides, a cover hinged to said case having edges projecting therefrom fitting closely within said inwardly projecting edge of said case, and a compact carrying backing in said case conforming in shape substantially to the interior of said case and having its upper edges formed to insure contact with said projecting edge or" said cover, whereby when said cover is closed said backings of varying size are held firmly in the vanity box.
8. In a vanity box, a case having upwardly extending sides, inwardly projecting edges on said sides, a cover for said case having edges projecting therefrom substantially normal to the plane of its face fitting closely within said inwardly projecting edge of said case, and a compact carrying backing in said case having its upper edges formed to insure cont-act with said normally projecting edge of said cover, whereby when said cover is closed said backings of varying size are held firmly in the vanity box.
4. In a vanity box, a case having upwardly extending sides, inwardly extending edges 011 said sides, a cover hinged to said case having an edge formed thereon fitting closely within the said inturned edges of said case, a compact holding backing conforming in shape to the inside of said case and having an outward lateral project-ion therefrom to insure contact of the upper edge of the backing with the interior of said case at a pluraliity of points whereby when the cover is closed said projecting edge or the cover engages the edge and said projection on said backing to hold the backings of varying size firmly within the case.
5. In a vanity box, a case having upwardly and outwardly extending sides, inwardly projecting edges on said sides, a cover for said case having edges projecting therefrom fitting closely within said inwardly projecting edge of said case, and a compact carrying backing in said case conforming in shape substantially to the interior of said case and having an outward lateral projection on its upper edge formed to insure contact with said backing by said projecting edge of said cover, whereby when said cover is closed said backing will be held firmly in the vanity box.
6. In a vanity box, a case having upwardly and outwardly extending sides, inwardly extending edges on said sides, a cover for said case having an edge formed thereon extending substantially normal to the plane of said cover and fitting closely within the said inturned edges oi said case, a compact holding backing conforming in shape to the in side of said case and having an inward and an outward lateral projection therefrom to insure holding of the compact in the backing and to insure contact of the upper edge of the backing with the interior of said case at a plurality of points whereby when the cover is closed said projecting edge of the cover engages the edge and said projection on said backing will be held firmly in the vanity box.
7. In a vanit box, a case having upwardly and outwar ly extending sides, a channelled bezel having inwardly projecting edges on said sides, a cover for said case having edges projecting therefrom fitting closely with said inwardly projecting edge of said bezel, and a compact carrying backs ing in said case having its upper edges formed to insure contact with said projecting edge of said cover, whereby when said cover is closed said backing will be held firmly in the vanity box.

In a vanity box, a case having upwardly and outwardly extending sides, a channelled bezel having inwardly projecting edges on said sides, a cover hinged to said case having edges projecting therefrom fitting closely with said inwardly projecting edge of said bezel, and a compact carrying backing in said case having its upper edges formed to insure contact with said projecting edge of said cover, whereby when said cover is closed said backing will be held firmly in the vanity box.

In a vanity box, a case having upwardly and outwardly extending sides, a channelled bezel having inwardly projecting edges on said sides, a cover for said case having edges projecting therefrom fitting closely with said inwardly projecting edge of said bezel, and a compact carrying backing in said case conforming in shape substantially to the interior of said case and having its upper edges formed to insure contact with said projecting edge of said cover, whereby when said cover is closed said backing will be held firmly in the vanity box.
10. In a vanity box, a case having upwardly and outwardly extending sides, a channelled bezel having inwardly extending edges on said sides, a cover for said case having an edge formed thereon fitting closely within the said inturned edges of said bezel, a compact holding backing conforming in shape to the inside of said case and having an inward and an outward lateral projection therefrom to insure contact of the upper edge of the backing with the interior of said case at a plurality of points whereby, when the cover is closed said projecting edge of the cover engages the edge and said projection on said backing to hold the backings of varying size firmly within the case.
11. In a vanity case, a case having upwardly and outwardly extending sides, a
channelled bezel having inwardly extending edges on said sides, a cover hinged to said case having an edge formed thereon fitting closely within the said inturned edges of said bezel, a compact holding backing conforming in shape to the inside of said case and having an inward and an outward lateral projection therefrom to insure contact of the upper edge of the backing with the interior of said case at a plurality of points whereby when the cover is closed said projecting edge of the cover engages the edge and said projection on said backing to hold the backings of varying size firmly within the case.
12. In a vanity box, a case having upwardly and outwardly extending sides, a channelled bezel having inwardly extending edges on said sides, a cover for said case having an edge formed thereon fitting closely within the said inturned edges of said bezel, a compact holding backing conforming in shape to the inside of said case and having an inward and an outward lateral projecttion therefrom to insure contact of the upper edge of the backing with the interior of said case at a plurality of points whereby when the cover is closed said projecting edge of the cover engages the edge and said projection on said backing to hold the backings of varying size firmly within the case, snap locking formed on said cover edge for engaging said case edge and a thumb piece formed from said cover edge.
