Application filed July 29, 1926.
The invention relates to hopper doors for hopper bottomed cars, and hoppers generally, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of door for controlling the dumping opening of hoppers by means of which the delivery of the contents of the hopper may be regulated at will.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hopper door con'iprising a curved plate having offset arms at its ends pivoting the door, and a shaft connected with the plate by means of flexible elements, said shaft being adapted to be rotated to open the door, provision being made for holding; the shaft from rotation to hold the door in open position either fully open or partly open, as may be desired.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side view of a fragment of a freight car equipped with improved construction of door,

In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
As will be apparent the improved construction of hopper door may be applied to hoppers generally, but for the purpose of illustration the door shown applied toa hopper bottomed freight car. designated A. the inclined hopper bottom being indicated at 1 and leading to a delivery opening The car A. is provided with a central loo 'itudinal beam or sill 3 that supports an angular hood l having its two sides inclined oppositely to the inclination of the hopper bottom 1. as shown at 5, and lower end spaced from the hopper bottom 1 as shown at (l, to form the opening; through which the contents of the hopper may be discharged.
The hopper doors each comprises a curved plate 7 having offset arms 8 that are pivoted. on a shaft 9 supported by supporting members 10 forming a part of the sides of the car body A and a supporting member 11 so cured to the sill 3. hen the doors are in a closed posit-ion the plates 7 rest in recesses 12 at the lower end of the hopper bottom 1 Serial No. 125,753.
and against shoulders 13 formed by said recesses, while the ends of the doors are engaged by blocks 14 secured to the sides of the hopper, thus making a leak-proof closure. t-lhafts 15 are journaled in the sides of the car body 1 and in the sill 3. and have flexible members such as chains 16 secured thereto and to the plates T. said shafts being adapted to be rotated by means of a crank handle. not shown, applied to the polygonal ends 17 of the shafts held from rotation by n'ieans of sliding latches 18 have forked otl'setends 19 to en, the polygonal ends 17 when it is desired to hold the shaft from rotation.

In combination with a hopper having an inclined bottom leading: to a deliverv opening. the lower end of said bottom havinp a recess providing a shoulder. a hood inclined oppositely to the bottom and. spaced therefrom. and a door for closing the space between the bottom and hood pivoted to move into open and closed positions through an arc, said door when closed seating in shaft suitably iourna'led. and a flexible member connecting said shaft and door.
