UNITED STATES HAROLD SCARTI-I, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
TILE oriosunn.
Application filed April 9,
' My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a tile closure and is adapted for use in closing the ends of hollow tile used in constructing buildings, so as to prevent concrete, which is poured to form the beams and columns of the building, from entering the ends of the hollow tiles positioned adjacent the position of pouring the beams or columns, or other portions of the building.
In constructing fireproof buildings, hollow tile are generally used for supporting the floors of the buildings and concrete beams are positioned to traverse the floors of the buildings and to support the same.
In the customary method of'construction,
the hollow tiles are positioned in close en gagement with the beams and form a part of the form into which the concrete is poured. The form generally projects considerably below the floor, so as to form a beam in the ceiling of the story beneath and the ends of the tiles, themselves, are usedto constitute a portion of the form. In pouring the form full of a plastic material, such as concrete, a portion of it enters the hollow ends of the tiles. This is undesirable as it does not add any particular strength to the structure and consumes or wastes a large amount of convcrete.
Various means have been employed for closing the ends of the hollow tiles at these portions where they form .a part of the form into which the concrete is poured, such as, stuffing'the ends With paper, blocks of wood, etc.
' In" the present invention, there is provided a device adapted for engaging in the hollow ends of the tiles which may be positioned in the tile before the same is laid in position.
An object of the invention is the provision of a tile closure of this class which may be quickly and easily inserted into the end of the tile and serve as an efiective closure of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tile closure of this class made from a thin strip of suitable material, and having afiixing means adapted for engaging in the ends of the tiles for efficiently closing the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tile closure of this class formed from a sheet of metal and having tongues projecting therefrom adapted for engagement with the tile for effectively closing the same.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
1924. Serial No. 705,162.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view or" the blank from which the invention is made,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a beam showing the invention in operation,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on substantially line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on substantially line H of Fig. 3.
As shown in the drawings, the invention is.
adapted for use in closing the ends of the hollow tiles 7, which are supported by suitable supporting material 8, projecting downwardly from which isone wall 9 of the form, which has the bottom wall 10 and an additional side wall 11 to provide a container for the plastic material, or concrete, 12, which is poured therein to form a beam of the building. The floor 13 is positioned on the'upper surface of the tile 7 and may be formed from any suitable material.
The tile, as shown in Fig. 3, is made with the openings 14 projecting therethrough,
the central opening being separated from the side openings by suitable ribs 15. Various forms of tiles may be used and the openings may be of various shapes and sizes, as Well as numbers. lVith the use of the various types of tiles, a modified form of the closure would have to be used, providing affixing means for entering each of the closures. The closure comprises a main body 16, having projecting from opposite sides tongues 17 which are separated by suitable spaces 18. After the blank is formed in this shape, the tongues 17 are bent on the lines 19 to form an angularly extending tongue, as shown in Fig. l. which is adapted toengage the inner surfaces of the openings 14 in the tile 7 It is to be noted that the spaces 18 are slightly wider than the ribs 15 and that the tongues 1? are bent slightly above the base of these spaces 18, so as to provide a spring effect on the tongue. By forming these spaces 18 slightly wider than the ribs 15 any inequalities in the formation of the ribs and tile may be accounted for and any spurs, or projections, which may be formed. on the inner surface of the tile be compensated for, so that,
when the tongues 17 are sprung into the forms shown in Fig. l, the same may be inserted into the openings of the tile, the tongues engaging the tile against the inner surface of the openings. The main body is preferably made from some sheet metal which will give a certain amount of resiliency to the tongues 17, and these tongues, because of their angular formation, are provided with a certain amount of resiliency which tends to keep the tongue against the inner surface oi the openings it, while, at the same time, permitting a flexing of the same for their entry into the openings. The main body 16 of the closure will then be projected across the major portion of the openings 1st, so to securely close them against the entry of concrete, or other plastic material, thereinto to any great extent, a slight amount of this material being permitted to enter at the slots 5%, which are slightly larger than the ribs 15, as stat-ed. As shown in Fig. 3, the main body projects, atoppos to sides of the end tongues, so as to engage the side walls of the tile.
lVith a closure of this class. constructed in this manner, the same may he very quickly and easily engaged in a tile in operatire position and the engagement of the utilizing tongues in the openings of the tile are sulticiently snug to prevent any undue removal of the closure from the tile when the same is being placedin position.
The closure may he made from a single blank, as shown in Fig. 1, stamped but in the form therein shown, or in any other desired form. depending upon the nature of the tile with which it is intended to be used. The tongues 17 may then, by a stamping process, be curved or bent to the desired form, so that the closure is one that is easily made and cheaply n'lannfactured.
l t to be noted that the closure may be easily removed from the tile after being placed therein, should closures be inserted in a larger nun'iher of these tiles than is desired to use. The closure, while serving its function therefor, is quickly and easily detached from the tile at any time previous to the pourin of the plastic material against the same.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise form of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tile closure of the class described adapted for use with a tile having a plurality of openings formed therein, adjacent openings being separated by a comparatively thin partition, coniprising a main bodyportion made from a stamping; a plurality of tongues projecting outwardly from each of the longitudinal edges of said main body portion. the tongues on each edge being in spaced relation and separated a distance greater than the thickness of said partition, said tongues being angularly turned to said main body portion and adapted for insertion into said openings for retaming said main, body portion in position as a closure for said openings, said main body portion extending across the spaces separating said tongues, lying in engage ment with said partition and the ends of said main body portion being projected be yond the edges of the cndmost of said openings.
A tile closure of the class described adapted for use with a tile having a plurality of openings formed therein, adjacent openings being separated by comparatively thin partitions, comprising: a main body portion made from a stamping; a plurality of tongues projecting outwardly from each of the longitudinal edges of said main body portion, the tongues on each edge being in spaced relation and separated a greater distance than the thickness of said partitions, said tongues being angularly turned relatirely to said main body portion, and adapted for insertion into said openings for retaining said main body portion in position as a closure for said openings, the tongues projected into each of said openings being bendable independently of the tongues projected into the other openings, said partitions engaging said main body at the portion .line between said tongues.
In testimony whereof, I have signed the foregoing specification.
