Description

t r: l
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE JAMES, OF NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERN-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,559, dated April 27, 1875; application filed March 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE JAMES, of North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lantern-Handles, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side View of my improved lantern-handle. Fig. 2 is a view of the same turned one-quarter around.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved lantern-handle which shall be so constructed that the lantern may hang straight or vertical, however it may be caught up and held, and which shall be simple in construction, neat in appearance, and readily applied to the lantern.
The invention consists in an improved lantern-handle, formed of the ring, the swinging and sliding block, and the open hook-ring, constructed and combined with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a wire ring of convenient size, and upon which is placed a small block, B, which turns and slides freely upon the said ring A.
Through a hole in the lower part of the block B is passed an open wire ring, 0, which is made with a small loop in its middle part, to prevent the block B from sliding upon it. The block B turns upon the Wire bail C, so as to enable the lantern to swing or oscillate without changing the position of the ring A. Upon the ends of the wire 0 are formed hooks to hook into the lantern, and thus suspend it. When intended for the use of railroad-conductors, a small ring is attached to the top of the block B, to receive a small hook attached to a strap, to be buckled around the conductors arm, so as to leave his hands free while suspending the lantern securely.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the swinging and sliding block B with the bail O and ring A, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
THEODORE JAMES.
Witnesses:
A. W. PRESTON, EDWARD JAMES.
