Thisinvention relates to take-up or drawing blocks for use in drawing metal and more particularly to take-up blocks for coilin metal which is delivered from cold rolls,
5 alt ough it is not limited to this use but may be used wherever drawing or take-up blocks are used. a)
One object of this invention is to provide a novel form of block of the character de- 10 scribed which will automatically collapse when its rotation is stopped thereby facilitating the removal of the material therefrom.

Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 2 designates the shaft of 'he block, which is journaled in a bearing 2 on the take-up stand A, and upon which the hub 3 is keyed, v A drum portion composed of parts 4 and 5 is mounted around the hub 3. The part 4 of the drum is pro vided with bearings 6 and 7 and is mounted for free movement on the shaft 2. The part 5 of the drum has its one end provided with a sleeve portion 8 adapted to be alined with openings 9 and 10 in the sides of the drum portion 4, and a pivot pin 12 is mounted in the openings 9 and 10 andsleeve 8 to form avpivotal' connection. a 1

-The toggle lever 18 is provided with a lug .22 to which one end of a strong coiled spring 23 is connected. A washer-like plate 24 is secured in the spring 23 adjacent its other end, and a headed bolt or rod 24" is passed through said plate and through a lug 25 on the hub 3 and provided with a lock-nut 26 and adjustingnut 27 above the lug 25. It will be readily understood that by adjustmg the position of the nuts 26 and 27 the tension of the spring 23 may be adjusted.
The part 4 of the drum is provided with an inwardly opening transverse slot 28 which has its one wall recessed to receive an elongated dog orvjaw bar'29. The bar 29 is provided with threaded'apertures adjacent each end in which are threaded guide v rods 30 which project through suitable apertures in the drum part into the interior of the drum. Coiled. springs 31 are mounted around each of the rods 30 and areheld in position by washers 32 and nuts 33 threaded on the inner ends of the rods 30. I

Thetake-up block is provided with a brake composed of a drum 40 and brakeband 41. The drum 40 is bolted or otherwise secured to the part 4 of the drum and the band 41 is'fitted around the drum 40. The band 41 has one end provided with a threaded rod 42 on which is threaded a sleeve 43. An eye 44 is threaded in the sleeve 43 and is pivotally connected to a bracket 45. on the take-up'frame A by a pin or bolt 46. The sleeve 43 forms means for adjusting the brake-band. I
The other ormovable end. of the band is rovided with'a double e e member 47 rigidly secured thereto. A rake lever 48 has .110
its one end pivotally mounted on the pin or bolt 46 in the bracket 45 and the eye member 47 on the movable end of the brake band is connected to the lever 48 intermediate its ends by a pin 49 so that when the outer or free end of the brake lever is depressed, the lever will move about the-pin 46 and tighten the band 41 on the drum 42.
A coil s ring 50 has one end fixedly con nected to t 1e bearing 2 on the take-npframe and its other end connected to the outer free end of the lever 48 so as to normally hold the lever in raised or non-braking position. A foot-lever 51 has its rear end pivotally connected to a bracket 52 secured to the take up frame A, and is connected intermediate its ends by clevis links 53 and 54 to the free end of the lever 48. An angle-shaped latch member 55 is mounted on the floor and provided with an opening 56 through which the foot-lever 51 projects. The opening 56 is offset at 57 to form a shoulder under which the foot-lever 51 is latched when depressed.
In operation, assuming that the block is in closed or collapsed position, with the toggle operated ends of the drum parts 4 and 5 in engagement, and that material is to be wrapped on the block, the rod 34 will be adjusted to theproper length to force the jaw 29 against the material. The end of the material will then be inserted in the slot 28 under the jaw 29. The brake foot-lever 51 will then be depressed to tighten the band 41 on the drum 40 and thus retard the movement of the take-up drum when power is applied. Power will then be ap lied to rotate the shaft 2 and hub 3. The ab 3 will ro tate a slight distance relative to the drum, thereby forcing the rod 34 against the jaw 29 to engage the end of the material, moving the link 20 toward an n right position to and 18 and theredepress the toggle levers 1 by expand or spread the drum arts 4 and 5, and stretching or tensionin t e spring 23. The brake serves to retard t e movement of the drum until the jaw 29 has gripped the material to be wrapped on the block, and after the block has been extended, and about one revolution has been made the retarding ef-- fect of the brake is no longer necessary, and 1t will be released by releasing the foot-lever 51. After the above operations are completed, the force of the rotating hub will be delivered through the rod 34, the link 20 and toggle levers 17 and 18, and sprin 23 to the drum and cause rotation of t e d i'um with the hub 3. p
The rotation of the hub 3 relative to the drum is limited by the rod 34 and jaw 29 so that the link 20 is never moved into a dead center position. When the torque or ower isreleased from" the shaft 2 the rotatlon of the hub 3 is slowed down and the spring23 will automatically cause a relative movement of the drum parts "4 and 5 relative to the hub which will collapse the toggles 17 and 18 to collapse the drum parts, and move the jaw 29 away from the rod 34, thereby allow.- ing springs 31 to retract the jaw from ongagement with the material on thedrum.
After the drum is collapsed, the material may be tied together in a bundle by passing tie wires through the slots 39 in the face of the drum and around the material. The tied bundle of material may then readily be removed from the collapsed drum.
It will be understood that it is not, always necessary or desirable to employ a brake to retard the operation of the take-up drum and that if desirable such brake may be omitted.
While I have shown and described one specific form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, sincevarious modifications may be made without departing from the scope of m invention whic is defined in the appen ed claims.
I claim:
1. A take-up or drawing block comprising a. shaft, a hub secured to said shaft, a drum portion formed in two parts, one of the parts of said drum being freely mounted on said shaft, the other of said drum parts be ing hinged at one end to said first mentioned drum part, and having its other end connected by a. series of toggle levers with said hub and said first mentioned drum part, a. spring'eonnected to one of said toggle levers and said hub and adapted to norma ly urge said levers into collapsed-position, said toggle levers being adapted to be forced into extended position to expand said drum parts into operative position against the tension of said spring when said shaft and hub are rotated, and means operable by said hub for. automatically gri ing the material being drawn on said lilliek when said hub and shaft are rotated.
2. A take-up or drawi block eoni rising a shaft, a hub secure to said sh t, 'a drum portion formed in two parts, one of the parts of said drum being, freely mounted on said shaft, the other of said drum parts being hinged at one end to said first mentioned drum part, and having its other end connected by a series of toggle levers with said hub and said first mentioned drum part, a spring connected to one of said tog le levers and said hub and adapted to normally urge said levers into collapsed position, said toggle levers being adapted to be forced into extended position to expand said drum parts into operative "position against the tension of said spring when said shaft and hub are rotated, and means operable by said hub for automatically gripping the material being drawn on said block when said hub and shaft are rotated, said gripping means being adapted to automatically release the material when said drum parts are collapsed.
3.
