This invention relates to phonographs.
In phonographs ofthe spring motor type as heretofore constructed, two main difliculties existed. In the first case, if through inadvertence, the spring was wound tightly, the stress from the winding when the spring finally came to a compact wound formation was transmitted through the metal as a very violent stress with consequent breaking of the spring. There was no give other than through the spring itself. The second defect was due to the fact that no means for oiling the spring was provided, and it was necessary to dismantle the entire motor in order to oil the spring.
This invention is designed to overcome the above noted defects, and objects of such invention are to provide a cushion for the end of the spring so that although the spring may be inadverently tightly wound, the stress is cushioned by this mechanism and breaking of the spring is avoided, and to provide simple means whereby the spring may be oiled without dismantling the motor.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the spring motor consists of a main gear wheel or worm wheel lwhich drives the usual worm 2 carried by the spindle 3. This worm wheel carries a casing si for the spring 5 and the casing and wheel are looselyy mounted upon the shaft 6. This shaft. as in the usual practice, is attached to the inner end of the spring, and isprovided with some form of ratchet wheel and detent such as indicated at 7 and 8. It is supported hy suitable ears 9 as indicated.
The cushioning mechanism for the spring comprising` a member l() in the form of an auxiliary rectangular casing within which a pair of rubber blocks 1l are positioned. This casing has a central stud 12 riveted to the outer end of the spring as indicated in Figure l.
The peripheral portion of the casing 4; is slotted, and has outwardly turned flanges 13 which contact With the rubber blocks as shown in Figure l.
Thus a cushion is provided by means of the rubber blocks and the auxiliary casing or compartment. For instance, if the operator inadvertently winds this spring too tight, this resulting stress is borne by the yielding cushion blocks 1l. Thus, suddenly applied stresses are guarded against and a cushioning of the spring is secured.
In order to provide facilities for oiling the spring, the casing 4 is provided with an apertured iianged portion 14: to which a spring pressed covering 15 is pivoted. Obviously, therefore, oiling of the spring may be readily accomplished by lifting the iiap l5 and injecting the lubricant.
It will be seen that a very simple type of spring motor is provided in which a cushioning of the spring and an easy Inanner of oiling it is afforded.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously vembodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim:
l. 'In a spring motor, the combination of a casing surrounding the spring, .a winding shaft attached to one end of the spring, said casing having a slot therethrough, and having stops adjacent such slot, an auxiliary casing slidably mounted upon the outer side of said first mentioned casing and attached to t-he outer end of the spring, and cushioning members carried by said auxiliary casing and abutting said stops.
2. In a spring motor mechanism, the combination of a spring, a winding shaft therefor, a casingl enclosing said lspring and having cylindrical peripheral portion provided with a slot and with upturned flanges adjacent said slot, an auxiliary casing slidably mounted upon the exterior of the first mentioned casing and having a tongue projecting through said slot and attached to said spring, said auxiliary casing having ar pair of rubber cushioned members abutting said flanges.
