This invention relates to locks for the transmissions of automobiles and has for its object the provision of ad-evice in which are included plungers adapted to engage keepers on the shifter rods for locking the shifter rods against movement, the plungers being operated by a rack and gear arrangement which in turn is actuated by a revolvable belt of a look, a circuit breaker being included in the arrangement whereby the ignition circuit is operated when the plungers are moved to locking position with the shifter rods.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description in view of the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification: nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is vertical section of a com bined locking mechanism and circuit breaker constructed according to the principles of my invention,

Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken along the line 44 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the connecting member between the lock and operating means for a pair of plungers and which carries the circuit breaker of the ignition system.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1O designates the top of a transmission casing in which is adapted to be secured an upwardly projecting lock casing 11, and a depending guide 12 for a pair of plungers l3 and 14. The casing 11 has an internal annular flange 15 and a guide 12 provided with a flange 16, and a bolt 17 secures the flanges to the top 10 of the transmission casing.
The guide 12 has transverse passages 18 and 19 adapted to receive respectively, the plungers 13 and 14, and by which the plungers are carried in the guide 12. Plunger 13 is provided with a rack 20 which is in mesh with a gear 21. Plunger 14 likewise has a rack 22 which is in mesh with a gear 21. The gear has a spindle 23 mounted in a bearing 24 formed in the lower end of the guide 12. The upper end of the gear is provided with a pair of ears 25 pinned at 26 to one end oi" a bar 27. Said bar 27 is twisted intermediate its ends and has its upper end received within a slot 28 in a connecting member 29. The bar 27 projects through an opening 30 in the cover plate 10 of the transmission casing.
The connecting member 29 is formed of metal and is encased by a sleeve 32 formed of insulating material to which is secured a brass contact member 33 of arcuate shape thereby exposing a port-ion 34 of the sleeve A resilient finger 36 is secured by a binning post 37 to the casing 11, and one wire 38 of the ignition system is connected to said binding post. A second resilient finger 39 is connected by means of a binding post 40 to a diametrically opposite point on the casing 11 and the other wire 41 ofthe ignition system is connected with said binding post. The outer ends of the fingers are bent as shown at 42 and 43 to form contacts adapted to engage the strip 33 for closing the ignition circuit. When finger 36 engages the strip 33 and the other finger 39 engages the portion 34 of the sleeve 32, the circuit is broken.
Mounted in the upper reduced end 44 of the casing 11 is a lock 45 of any approved construction, adapted to be operated by a key 46. A look bolt 47 is rotated by a key 46 and has a reduced end 48 received by the insulating sleeve 32, and secured to said sleeve in any approved manner. The lower end of the reduced portion 48 is provided with a slot 49, in which is engaged a portion of a key 50, the other portion of the key being received within a slot 51 formed in the upper end of the member 29, so that when the bolt 47 is rotated, the member 29 will be rotated and likewise the sleeve 32 for opening and closing the circuit of the ignition system, and since the upper end of the bar 27 is engaged within the slot 28 of the member 29, said bar will be revolved as will be the gear 21 for causing shifting of the plungers 13 and 14 in opposite directions, so that the plunger 13 will be received within the perforation 52 in the upper end of a clamp 53 which is secured to a shifter rod 54. A second clamp 55 secured to the shifter rod 56 is provided with a perforation 5'? adapted to be engaged by plunger 14: when plunger 13 enga rs the perto 'ation 50 in the clamp 53. This position of the plungers obtained when the bolt -.l-? is rotated, and the sleeve 3:2 has been rotated to place the contact- 43 in engagement with the insulat ing sleeve 32 so that the circuit to the ignition system is broken.
As is Well known, the transmission lever 59, which movable to a position to engage the slot (50 in the block 61 or to engage the slot (32 in the block (32-3, may be oscillated laterally to engage either of said notches, but may not be shifted forwardly or rearwardly to move either of the shifter rods 5st and 56, since these rods are locked together and as a consequence the transmission is held in an inoperative position.
What I claim is 1. In a motor vehicle, a transmission "casing having shifter rods reciprocal therein, and a cover with an opening, an upstanding casing having an inturned flange about its base adapted to form an opening to register with the opening in said transmission cover, a locking bar mounted in said upstanding casing and adapted to be rotated by a key inserted at the upper end of the casing, a guide member having an outwardly extending flange and adapted to fit upon the lower surface oi the transmission cover bolts for securing together said transmission cover and the flanges of said upstanding casing and said guide member, a gear rotatably mounted in said guide member, connecting means between the gear and looking bar for rotating the gear with said locking bar. and movable members in said guide member adapted to be actuated by the rotation of said gear for locking the shifter rods of said t1'ans1n'.-'on against movement.
