ROBERT R. LUNDiY, E SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
CROSS-'WORD PUZZLE.
Application led June 15, 1925. 'Serial No. 37,274.
' theranswer in the next issue, therefore it is necessary for a person working a cross word puzzle to wait until the answer is published before knowing if the puzzle has been worked correctly,l and the key is primarily designed to vobviate this difliculty and to allow a person vto immediately fprovethe correctness of the words or synonyms written in the puzzle sheet.
A further object is to provide a key cornprising a plurality of numbers corresponding to numbers on the blanksof the puzzle sheet and arranged in an order for vertical and horizontal words `whereby when the words are placed in consecutive order according to the ke numbers connected reading mattei` will e presented, for instance a Jingle, verse or poetry, thereby indicating to a person that they have correctly solved the puzzle, and if the reading is not connected, they will immediately know a wrong,v synonym has been inserted in the puzzle and canv correct the same.
A further object is to" provide the key numbers with indicating means whereby the number will be known at once that the nume ber is a horizontal or vertical number, thereby facilitating the selecting of the words for connected readingafter working the puzzle.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a conventional Vform of cross-word puzzle.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the horizontal and vertical numbered words for which synonyms are to be found, for the puzzle.
Figure 3 isa plan View showing the synonyms and words applied to the puzzle.
Figure 4 is a. plan view of the key.
Figure 5 is a plan view showing the resultant obtained after using the key.
Referring to the drawing the letter a designates the cross-word puzzle sheet, which is provided with a plurality of blank spaces b for horizontal words correspond-l ing to the numbers in the numbered horizontal column c of Figure 2 and a plurality of vertical word receiving blanks (l corresponding to the numbered vertical column e of Figure 2, all of which-is the same as a conventional formA of cross-word puzzle. It has been found it is extremely desirable for a person after working a cross word puzzle to have some means of provingI the correctness of the answers placed onA the puzzle without waiting until the answer is published at a subsequent time, and to accomplish this result a key is provided. The key f comprises a plurallty of numbers corresponding to the horizontal and verti` which numbers are consecutively arranged 4whereby when words in correspondingly' numbered horizontal and vertical spaces ot' the puzzle sheet are arranged according to the key numbers connected reading matter is formed, and from which connected reading matter it will be obvious to the person working the puzzle, they have correctly or incorrectly solved the puzzle, for instance, referring to Figure 5 and the key in Figure 4, 47 of the key is A, 79 is the horizontal word publicf 6, 61, 13, 72 and 44 are vertical words dispensary patient was placed on, therefore it will be seen that the resultant ,of the key is connected reading which will plainl indicate to the worker of the puzzle that t 1e same has been correctly solved, and if the reading is not connected, it will be obvious that a -mistake has been made in the selection of a word or synonym and which may be corrected and properly solved. The ke may include numbers corresponding to a l of the horizontal and vertical numbers on the puzzle sheet, or if desired a sutiicient quantity of said numbers whereby the words will be of a sufficient quantity to cross all of the words on the puzzle sheet, which in itself will indicate the words not indicated on the key are correct. The vertical numbers on the key are shown underscored to facilitate the locating of the same on the puzzle sheet without reference tothe horizontal and vertical lists` thereby allowing the words to be easily and quickly located on the puzzle sheet for writing the resultant connected reading. The resultant may be in the form ot' a jingle, paragraph, poem or any other connected reading. It. is to be understood however cal space numbers on the puzzle sheet. a, and
that any means desired may he utilized for distinguishing the horizontal and vertical numbers of the key from each other.
From the above it will be seen that. meansv is provided in connection with a cross word inserted inthe puzzle by arranging hori-V zontal and vertical words ofthe puzzle into connected reading matter according to a key having numbers corresponding to horizontal and vertical word Spaces on the puzzle sheet,
and it will not be necessary for the person to wait for the publication of answers to cross-word puzzles.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a cross word nizzle having horizontal and vertical numiiered word-receiving spaces, of a key having numbers corresponding to space numbers on the puzzle and forming means whereby when corresponding numbered words of the puzzle are consecutively arranged according to the key, connected reading is formed.
2. The combination with a cross word Lezama puzzle having numbered horizontal and-vertical word-receiving spaces, of a key comprising numbers corresponding to word numbers on the puzzle and forming means whereby when vwords are selected and consecutively written in accordance to the key numbers connected reading matter is formed, and means carried by the key numberwhereby horizontal word numbers are distinguished from vertical word numbers. 3. The combination with a cross Word puzzle having numbered 'horizontal/and vertical word-receiving spaces, of a key comprising numbers corresponding t0 the word numbers on the puzzle and forming means whereby when words are selected and con secutively written in accordance to the key numbers connected reading matter will be iormed.
l In testimony whereof I aix mysignature.
