IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-LOADING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. EQEQ, dated April 27, 1875; application filed July 3, 1874.
To all whom Iit may concer-n Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH WoHLeE- MUTH, of the city and county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Making, Trimming, and Capping Cartridges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which are shown the several views of the different parts composing said apparatus.
The apparatus is constructed substantially as follows: A box is first' made. (Shown by Figure l of the drawing.) In the top of this box a hole is made large enough to admit the cartridgecase. Over this hole a slide, S, is fitted in grooves to slide to and fro, the top of said slide being made to come flush with the top ofthe box. Over said hole on the top of the box, and over the end of the slide, a conical tube, r, is set, made with a flange around its base, upon which buttons m m are arranged to bear to secure it to the box. In this conical tube the cartridge-case u is put, the slide being shoved back, as shown by the dotted lines, and the case introduced in the tube from the inside of the box, after which the slide is shoved back in its place under the lower end of the cartridge. A tube, B, is then screwed in the top of the tube o', this last-mentioned tube being screwed down until it strikes the top of the cartridge, which is thus brought accurately under the center of the tube, and held firmly upon the top of the box. A tube, O, is then screwed in the top of the tube B. A rod, t, is then introduced in the tube G, inside ot a spiral spring, which is coiled around it inside of the tube. A rod, W, fitted with a cap, is then screwed in the top of the rod t, the two rods forming the raminer by which the charge and wads are forced in the cartridgecase.
The powder-is introduced into the cartridgecase through the opening T. A wad is then introduced through the same opening, and a blow of the hand upon the cap YV forces it down hard upon the powder. The shot is then introduced, followed by a second wad, which is driven home by a second blow on the cap W. The slide S is then drawn back, and
the cartridge allowed to fall in the box below. Then, if the cartridge-case be of paper or other soft material, and is too long, the open end is slipped on a stud, n, screwed in the end of the box, the cartridge-case fitting in the vacant space P between the stud and a cap, q. A knife, o, fitted in the cap q, is then pressed down upon the cartridge-case, which, being turned by the hand, is cut 0E to the desired length, the cap g being first secured from turning by means of a set-screw arranged to bear in a groove, t', and its position on the stud n being adjusted by means of a screwnut, o, the position of which ixing the length of the cartridge.
The cartridge being thus made and cut off, the cut end will be square, the edges being full and sharp, whereas the outside edges should be chamfcred a little to facilitate its entrance in the breech of the gun. This is accomplished by slipping the end of the cartridge in a tube, y, in the bottom of which a cutting or rasping form is tted to give the end of the cartridge the proper form upon turning it with the hand.
The cartridge-charger shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing is substantially the same as that shown by Fig. l, the cap Gr, which is held in the hand, taking the place of the top -ot' the box, upon which the cartridge sits in Fig. 1, while it is being charged, Fig. 2 being merely a modified form of charger shown by Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is still another modification, consisting merely of a rammer, w, a guide-tube, H, and a cartridgecase, J, intended to be used in charging a ball-cartridge in the field, though it may be used to charge shot-cartridge, and either 0i' the other chargers may be used for making ball-cartridges, the different iigures showing simpler forms of the same thing.
It should be added that the box Q is fitted with a drawer, It, and a tray, (not shown in the drawing,) in which the several parts of this apparatus are packed when not required for use.
Having now described the nature and extent of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cartridge-charger consisting of a tube, B, made with an opening in the side, by which to charge the cartridge, combined with a cap (screwed in the top thereof) and a rammer,
