BRADLEY P. WHEELER, OF DULUTH, MNNESOTA..
VTASTE-HEAT BLEB EUR REGENERATIVE FRNACES.
Application filed June 17,
This invention .relates to .improvements in regenerative furnaces, and more specifically to a removable slag` pocket bottom combined with a Waste heat boiler'.
In furnaces of the regenerative type the fines which carry off the Waste gases and also in turn serve to introduce the preheated gases or air, tend to become clogged with the finely divided matter carried by the gases and also with material finned from the Walls of the passages by the intense heat. Those portions of these passages located under the end of the furnace are commonly formed with enlarged portions usually known as slag pockets. ln furnaces using gases which are preheated, separate air and gas slag pockets are provided. These pockets serve in a measure to receive deposits of the finely divided matter or iuxed material, and it is necessary from time to time to stop the Work of the furnace and clean out and in part rebuild there poel;- ets. These particular points are constantly heated both when serving for the incoming and for the outgoing gases, and while their temperature toward the end of the incoming operation of the cycle may be somewhat lower than that When serving to carry off the outgoing gases, they are nevertheless al Ways of comparatively high temperature. A certain amount of steam must be provided in connection with furnace operation for use in generating power or for other purposes. The slag pocket, due to its temperature forms a very satisfactory place for the interposition of a Waste heat boiler. This pocket is considerably enlargedfrom the size of the adjacent uptakes and the passages leading to the checker chamber, and a boiler may be placed 'therein without seriously interfering With the draft of the furnace.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a removable bottom for furnace slag pockets or similar passages and to provide in association with such bottom a Waste heat boiler.
It is a further object to provide a device of this character in which the bottom and boiler may readily be removed and replaced together.
Other and further obgects will appear' as the description proceeds.
Broadly, my invention comprises a truck adapted to be run in and out of a slag pocket or similar passage and when in place to serve as the bottom of the passage. It may also, in the preferable forni, cover the lower por- 1921. Serial No. 478,258.
tion of the side walls of the passage. This truck carries upon it a boiler of any desired type, suitable connections for introducing Water and permitting` the passage of steam being provided.
T have shown a preferred form of my invention somewhat diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a fragmentary view showing a cross .section through a slag` pocket With my device installed therein and Figure 2 is a view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In the drawings the furnace structure is designated this structure forming 'the uptake 1, and the slag pocket 5. The end of the slag pocket at is connected with a flue (not shown) leading to the regenerative chambers. 'My removable truck 7 has its bottom and sides 8 formed of metal and is lined with a layer 9 of fire brick or other refractory material. The truck is carried by Wheels 10 upon track 11. Supported upon the truck is the boiler 12 which, as shown, is
of the Water-tube type. The boiler is supported from the truck by supporting members indicated at 15 to 16. As shown in Figure 1, when the boiler and truck are in place in the slag pocket, the open spaces in the end of the slag pocket are covered by a temporary Wall 13 of refractory material. The upper portion laof the boiler may be connected to a steam main in any desired manner. This portion of the boiler is shown supported by the bracket 17.
Vhen installed as shown in the drawings, the truck 8 Will receive the finely divided matter deposited by the gases and these gases Will impinge against the tubes of the boiler and heat the Water therein. It is to be understood that when the boiler is in a slag pocketserving as the incoming end of the furnace, it is heated by the preheated gases, Which may be gas or air, depending` upon Whether the device is inserted in the air or gas slag pocket. At the incoming end of the furnace these gases Will come in through the end 6 of the furnace, pass through the slag pocket 5 and up through the uptake 4l. When this end of the furnace is serving as the outgoing end of the furnace the heated exhaust gases will come down the uptake li, pass through the slag pocket and out through the end 6 thereof. Thus, regardless of the direction of operation of the furnace the slag pocket is constantly re` ceiving gases at high temperature. When it is necessary to remove the boiler for cleaning the temporary Wall 18 is broken away and the truck 8 is moved out upon its tracks 11. The boiler may then beremoved from trucks and boilers a clean boiler and truck.
may be installed immediately upon withdrawing t'lie'otlier truck and boiler and the Wall 13 quickly replaced so that there need be no material delay in the operation of the furnace.
By the combination of the truck and boiler a source of steam `which' takes its'lieat from one of the most satisfactory parts ofthe furnace foi-this purpose issecured, and this boiler'maybe readily removed for cleaning when necessary. There is furthersecured.a receptacle for the debris normally received in the slag pocket, and this receptacle is also removable, thus much decreasing the time during which the furnace nerd` be stopped forclaning and removing the slag pocket bottom and Walls.
I claim:.
