Patented Apr. 19, 1927.
UNITED STATES 'PATENT,ori-Ica4 WILLIAM P. ARON, F DALLAS, TEXAS,v ASSIGNOR, BYDIRECT'VAND MESNE .ASSIG'N i MENTS, TO ARON ELECTRIC RAZORy COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, VA.
CORPORATION or DELAWARE.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY RAZOR.
Application tiled January 8, 1926.` Serial No. 80,014.
This invention relates to electrical appliances and more particularly to electrlcally operated razors, the primary object of whlch is to provide an apparatus of this character adapted to expedite shaving b y afordmg an improved means for imparting a reclprocating movementto the cutting blade of vthe razor.
It is a further object of the invention to l0 provide a razor of the character designated,
having certain features permitting ready removal of parts to facilitate -cleanlng thereof, and permitting replacement of s uch parts should they become worn or impa1red l5 through use.
It is further the object of the invention to provide a razor of durable and lasting construction having few and simple parts, to enable the instrument to be manufactured at a low cost.l
The invention accordingly comprises the elementssa'nd combination of elements, features of construct-ion, and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the structure hereinafter described, and the-scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated one of various possible embodiments of the invention, l
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation, .the handle being depicted in vertical section.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the invention. L A Figure, 4 is a perspective View of the shield and blade actuating member.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the blade actuating member and,
i Figure 6 is a perspective View of the preferred form of blade.
Corresponding reference characters indicatey corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In proceeding in accordance with the fore` going, the invention comprises ,a hollow handle 1, exteriorly shou'ldered an'dfthread ed at each end. This handle encloses a electromagnetic coil 2, towhich suitable electrical current is conveyed through wires 3, connected thereto.
Threaded upon the lower end of the handle 1, is a cap 21 apertured to receivev the leads 3. Across the aperture is a closure disk 22 by which the handle is sealed.
Threaded upon the upper end of the handle 1 is a cap 4, apertured to admit a magnetic pole 5 of the coil 2, and upon the cap, the blade retaining shield or head and blade actuating member are secured. The reference character 6 denotes this shield or head, while the character 7 indicates 'the blade actuating member. l
Particular attention is directed to the construction of the shield 6, as well as its relation to the actuating member 7. The shield is of skeleton construction to enable the vsame to be readily cleaned after use of the razor, adding materially to the sanitary featuresthereof, and in addition to this, is of such f construction 'as to obviate the-necessity of y requiring a cover toenvelop the blade, as is usually the case in razors of the safety variety. Particular reference to the blade 8, in Figure 6, will disclose that the latter is equipped with an enlargement 9, adapted to be received Within a clip 10 forming an integral part of the shield 6, While -a longitudinal ridge 11 in the clip 10 as in' Figures 3 and 4, engages the enlargement 9 of the blade and holds the latterpositively from displacement other than that due to longitudinal movement. the blade is provided with slots or apertures 12, which, when the blade is in its proper v position within the clip 10, registers with a small slot or opening 13 near one end of the clip.
Referring to the blade reciprocating member 7, attention is directed to the detail view thereof shown in Figure 5. This member is shown as being constructed of ayieldable spring having an armature portion 14, andan arm 25 directed upwardly therefrom at an angle to the normal to said blade. The tip of the arm 25 normally engages Within one of the slots 12 of the blade 8, thereby locking the blade in the head. It will be observed in Figure 5, that a small offset or shoulder a is formed in the tip of the arm 7, where it enters the slot 12 of the blade. When the leads 3 are connected toa suitable sourcev of alternating current, magnetic induction imparted by the coil through the pole 5 reacts upon thespring The enlargement 9 of armature 14, when in position upon the cap 4, such action producing intermittent or vibratory movement of the arm 25. The shoulder a' contacts with the edge of the slot 13 during movement of the arm to reciprocate the blade 8`within the clip` 10, in which it has free longitudinal movement, controlled by the position of the arm 25 within the slot` 12. The blade moves in shuttle fashion.
In de-blading the instrument, it is required only to' force the armature portion 14 of the spring downwardly, thereby disconnecting the arm 25 from the slot 12, whereupon the blade is free to move from its positionV within the clip 10.
It is therefore obvious that when electrical energy is imparted to the coil 2, such energy is suicient to react upon the spring armature 14, through the magnet pole 5, to
move the arm 25, thereby causing the bladev 8 to reciprocate. See Figure 2.
By virtue of the above construction, the blade is positively actuated in both directions through a predetermined stroke by a single moving element, namely, the sprmg armature 7. Furthermore, the handle 1, in which all of the electrical parts are located,
is sealed and has no moving parts therein' nor extending therefrom.
In view'of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.
As many changes could be made in carrying out the above constructions without departing from the scope of the' invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. An electrical razor including a hollow handle and a head, an electromagnetic coil within the handle; a` blade mounted forV reciprocation parallel to its edge in said head and provided with an aperture; and a spring armature interposedl between said f blade and said coil and having a portion engageable in the aperture of said blade and adapted, when actuated by the coil, to
reciprocate said bladepositively in both',
rections. y
2. An electrical razor including a hollow handle and a head, `an electromagnetic coil within the handle; a blade mounted for reciproca-tion parallel to its' edge in said head and provided with an aperture; and a spring armature beneath said head having a portion engageable in the aperture of said blade to lock the same in said head andl adapted, when actuated by the coil, to reciprocate said blade positively in both .di` rections; said armature being displaceable to effect release of the blade from said head.
8. An electrical'razor including a hollow handle and a head; an electromagnetic coil within the handle; a blade mounted for rer ciprocation parallel to itsedge in said head;
a spring armature beneath said headhaving a portion inclined to the normal to said blade and engaging said blade; and a core within said coil and extending through said handle and adapted to cause the armature to reciprocate said blade positively inboth directions; said portion releasably locking said blade in said head.
4. An electrical razor including a hollow handle; a head; a blade mounted for ref ciprocation' in said `head and provided 'with an aperture; a spring' armature beneath said blade having a portion engageablein the aperture. or' said blade; and means to attract the spring armature magnetically to move the blade in one direction; the resiliency of said armature causing the blade to move in the reverse direction.
5. An electrical razor including a hollowl handle and a head; an electromagnetic coil within the handle; a blade mounted for rcciprocation parallel to its edge in said head and provided with an aperture; an arma?
