IMPROVEMENT IN SHlNGLlNG-BRACKETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,483, dated April 27, 1875; application filed September 19, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Anmson LOV'EJOY, of South Paris, in the county of Oxford and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staging-Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification:

The object of my invention is to produce a device for sustaining a seat or staging for mechanics while employed in the shingling of the roofs of buildings.

I am aware that devices have been invented which, when placed upon the roof of a building, furnish a horizontal support for boards or a staging, which devices also have means for securing them in position on the roof. My invention consists of a peculiar method of constructing such a device, which I will now describe.

In the drawing, a illustrates a roof. bis the upright portion of my device, which, at its lower end, is furnished with points to penetrate the shingles of the roof, and thus hold it firmly in place. 0 shows the horizontal portion of my device, or that upon which the boards or stagings rest. The parts b and c are jointed together at d, as illustrated. 6 shows a second horizontal arm, which is united with c at f, forming, with the nippers h, a pincher-shaped implement, which is employed to fasten upon one of the rows of shingles last fastened to the roof, and, by its griping upon such shingles, hold the whole device securely upon the roof. The lower jaw of the nippers h is made flat, so as to rest evenly upon the shingles. The arm 6 extends back to the upright 11, and passes through it in a slot near the upper end thereof, and is furnished with a hook, t', to fit over a shoulder, j, to keep it properly fastened. This arm 6 also has the shoulder 70, by means of which the entire device is enabled to stand in position upon a roof and support a staging, although the nippers It should slip from a shingle. If this should take place, the shoulder is would heep the arms 0 and b expanded, and thus hold the support in proper position. Without this shoulder 70 the whole support is dependent upon the bite of the nippers IL upon the shingles to keep it in place. The device will stand upon the roof as long as the point of the arm I) penetrates the roof. The weight upon the arm 0 would close the arms a and b or press them down flat were it not for the hook t and the shoulder 70. It should be specified that the arm b is double and expanded at the bottom, so as to form a base and prevent the device from falling over on one or the other sides. The nippers h are made bifurcated, so as to embrace more than one shingle, if desired.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The staging-support composed of the slotted pointed double arm b, arms 0 and c, the bifurcated nippers h, the arm 0, having the shoulder 7c and hook t', and the arm b, having the shoulder j, all as herein described.
