UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
AUTOMOBILISTS GLOVE.
Application filed August 1 0, 1926. Serial No. 128,449.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in signaling devices, and particularly to devices which are adapted to be worn by automobile drivers for indicating to other drivers of an intention to change the course.
The common practice, in signaling of an intention to turn,'or otherwise change the course of travel of an automobile, is to eX- tend the arm and hand out of the side of the automobile, within view of the drivers of other automobiles. If the driver is Wearing black, or other dark-colored gloves, it is very difficult, if not impossible to see the extended hand. Especially is this true at night. It is therefore the principal object of the present invention to provide a glove, to be worn on the signalling hand of the driver, which will be plainly visible, both in the daytime, and at night.
Another object is to provide a glove of this character, and. for this purpose, which has a warning legend thereon in a color which is in strong contrast to that of the glove, and which can be readily seen and read by other drivers, approaching from the front or rear.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a drivers glove made in accordance with the present invention, viewed from the back of the glove.
Figure 2 is an elevational view from the V front of the glove, and showing the legend strip folded. back todi'sclose the closure of the glove.
Figure 3 is fragmentary elevation of the front, or palm portion of the glove, showing the legend carrying strip secured thereto.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a glove which is formed of any suitable material, but preferably white in color. The glove is formed with the closure 11 having the fastener 12 thereon. At each side of the outer end of the closure there is secured the head portions 13, of snap fasteners. On the back of the glove there is provided the legend Look, which may be painted thereon, in
black letters, or sewed thereon, as shown in the drawing, such letters 14 being sewed to a separate strip of white material, and the said strip sewed to the back of the glove. Sewed to the palm of the glove is one end of a similar strip of white material 15, having sewed, or otherwise formed thereon, the same-legend as that of the back of the glove. The other end of this strip 15 is free, and has secured thereto the socket portions 16, of snap fasteners, which are arranged to engage with the head portions 13, at the sides of the closure, whereby the said strip serves'two purposes, one of carrying the legend, and the other of forming a part of the closure of the glove, for retaining the same on the wrist of the wearer.
As nearly all of the automobiles now on the market are equipped with a steering wheel on the left hand side, the glove to be worn by the driver is preferably a left hand glove, and when the driver wishes to signal to other drivers he simply extends the gloved hand out from the side of the automobile, in such position that the legend thereon may be seen by drivers approaching from the rear, and also by those approaching from the front. Furthermore, the fact that the glove is white, renders the same plainly visible at night, as well as in the daytime. The black letters, on the front and back of the glove, being in strong contrast to the body of the glove, will immediately attract the eyes of other drivers, thus properly apprising them of the intention of a change of course, on the part of the driver who wears the glove.
What is claimed is:
A signaling device for vehicle drivers comprising a glove of light color having a legend on the back thereof of a color contrasting with that of the glove, a flap secured at one end to the palm of the glove and having a similar legend thereon in a dark color, and means for detachably sec-uring the free end of the flap at the wrist portion of the glove whereby to cover the closure of the glove, to retain the closure in closed position, and to display the legend on said flap.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
ESSIE R. PALMER.
