ARCI-IIE EDWARDS BROWN, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
COTTON PICKER.
Application filed September My invention relates to an improvement in cotton pickers.
It further consists in exhaust mechanism in connection with a suction-pipe, and light and flexible hose terminating in a pouched glove adapted to be worn on the hand of the operator, whereby to withdraw and catch the cotton as fast as it is removed from the boll by the operator.
The object is to provide increased facility in the operation of cotton picking, and to 'this end it utilizes the action of the human hands in combination with suitable mechanical means to carry out successfully the operation. This invention consists in means attachable to the hands and arms of the oprator. and used in coordination with a suction oi' exhaust mechanism for drawing the cotton into a suitable receptacle as fast as it is picked by the operator from the bolls.
further object of my invention is to so arrange the vehicle that the horse attached thereto is in the rear of the machine, it being obvious that the horse may be hitched so as to push, or pull the vehicle.
in the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device,
Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of the outer ends of the shafts,
TTig. 5 is a detail view of the roll-er,
el is an enlarged detail of the glove pplied to the hand,
5 is a front view of the glove.
n Ythe preferred construction the vehicle preferably consists of frame A of steel Vubing so constructed that the shafts 1 extend krearwardly of the machine as illustrated in Fig. 1. rlhis frame is suitably supported on a drum 2 which as illustrated inFigs. 1 and B, has a concave body portion terminating in two flanged ends l-fl serving as wheels. rThe drum is journaled on an axle 5, the outer ends of which are supported in suit-able flanges 6 6 of the main frame The main frame A terminates forwardly of' the wheeled support, 4in a platform l', into a fender 8. A sea-t 9 is located upon said platform 7. y Y
The outer ends of the shafts 1 receive a removable cross bar 10 and pivoted centrally of this bar is a whiffletree 11.
Extending upwardly from the main frame is a truss frame B, and supported at the top of this frame is an exhaust fan 12 which is propelled by a motor 13 supported Serial No. 739,453.
upon the main frame at the rear of the ro` tary support, by means of a chain connection 14. As an auxiliary means for driving the fan 12, I preferably arrange a sprocket wheel 15 on the rotary support 2 which is aligned with a sprocket w ieel 1G secured to the shaft 17 of the suction fan -12.
Extending forwardly from the suction fan 12 is a suction pipe 18 to the outer end of which is attached a pair of flexible suction hose 19-19. To the outer end of each of these hose is attached a specially constructed pouch 20, which preferably consists in a more or less flexible tubular member flaring outwardly at its lower end and cut away as at 21, which as illustrated in Fig. 4 is adapted to be received in the palm of the hand with the opening 21 toward the palm of the hand, being held in place by a set of finger slips 22-22 and by a strap 23 which is adapted to pass around the wrists. By this arrangement the hand cooperates with the member 2O in forming a suction nozzle for collecting the cotton drawn in by the suction fan 12.
Thev suction fan 12 leads to a removable bag 24 which is located at the rear of the machine and suspended on a hook 25.
The lines 26 lead forwardly from the draft animal. and pass over hooks 27--27 within reach of the operator.
From the foregoing, the operation is probably clear, but, to repeat, the machine is driven slowly alongside the row of cotton, the suction fan being kept in operation, the operator picking the cotton with his hands just as he would in the old-fashioned way, the suction coming to his aid to remove the cotton and deposit it in the bag or receptacle just as it is picked from the cotton boll. It is obvious that additional length hose may be added to the fan to admit of two or more men walking in adjoining rows to gather the cotton. As stated, the machine may be operated by the horse alone, by gearing the drive wheel to the fan, or the horse may be dispensed with entirely and the engine geared to the drive wheel and fan.
I claim:
1. A suction nozzle for cotton-pickers comprising aY tubular flexible casing, said casing having a cut-out portion at the forward end permitting the palm of the operators hand to form one side of the nozzle, and straps secured to the open end of the casing in position to receive the operators,
lll
fingers, and an additional Strap around the wrist of the operator for securing the flexible casing in position to be actuated and Controlled by the operator.
2. The combination of a frame of a Vehicle, a wlieel arranged centrally of the franie upon which the latter is mounted7 shafte extending rearwardly of tlie frame, a seat extending` forwardly7 of the frame, a lteering-wlieel arranged forwardly of the seat? a receptacle lield in the Vehicle at tlie rear portion thereof, a suction fan arranged above the supporting wheel, means for driving` tlie fain a suction pipe and two flexible hose depending' from the suction pipe and terminating` adjacent the operators seat.
8. The combination of a frame of' a Veliicle7 a wlieel arranged Centrally of the frame upon which the latter is mounted, driving-shafts extending rearwardly of the frame, a eross-bar secured to the outer end of said shaft, a Whittle-tree secured to the cross-bar, a Seat extending` forwardly of the frame, steering-wheel arranged forwardly of the seat, a receptacle lield in the vehicle in the rear portion thereof, a suction fan arranged above the supporting-wheel, means for driving the fan7 a suction pipe, and two flexible liose depending from the suction pipe and terminating; adjacent the operators seat.
ln testimony whereof l affix iny signature.
