The die 26 for sizing and shaping the tubes to the mandrel and for polishing their outer surface is slightly smaller in diameter than the unfinished tube and is secured in the inner end of a hollow shaft 28 which is mounted in bearings 30 secured to the machine frame and so arranged that the die is in alineinent with one of the niandrels carried by the turret. rlhe die is rotated by a belt 82 passing over a pulley 34 on the die shaft and uniform rotation of the die during the full stroke ofthe turret is insured by a fly wheel 36 secured to the shaft.
A lubricant such as a suitable oil, grease or sizing is applied to the outer surface of the tube as it is about to enter the die by a lubricating device, which, as shown in Fig. fountain brush 38 arranged in front of the die. The brush is carried by an arm 40 secured to one end of a rock shaft 42, the other end of which is provided with ca second arm 44 connected by a link 46 with a lever 48. The end of the lever 48 is connected by a link 50 with the outer end of a lever 52, the inner end of which engages a cam 54 on a cain shaft 56. The cam shaft is driven from the driving shaft 22 through a gear'S and pinion 60. The cam 54 is properly shaped to lift the lubricating brush as the rear end of the tube passes beneath it, to hold it in raised position during the return stroke of the mandrels, and to again return it into a position to apply the lubricant to the succeeding tube during the next forward stroke of the turret slide.
The lubricant is carried in a cylinder 62 and is forced downward through the brush by a screw threaded plunger G4 which is advanced st'ep-by-step by a ratchet nut 66 engaged by a pawl S8. The pawl is carried by a lever 70 connected by a link 7:2 to the upper end of a fixed bar 74. Each time the brush is raised and lowered by rotation thereof about the rock shaft 4Q, as an axis, there will occur a relative movement carrying lever and the ratchet nut7 operating between the pawl ifi the ratchet nut a step and thus advancing the screw threaded plunger. Vhen the supply of lubricant in the cylinder 62 is exhausted, the plunger 64 ma)7 be screwed up to the upper end of the cylinder by hand and a fresh suppl;7 of lubricant forced into the cylinder under the plunger through a flexible pipe 767 the upper end of which is connected to a pipe 78 provided with a controlling valve 80 and the lower end of which is connected to a pump within the supplj,7 tank 82 which may be operated by the hand lever 84.
The means for feeding or automatically supplying tubes to the mandrel 4 which is out of alinement with the die and in tube receiving position, comprises tube feeding' and supporting segn'ients 86 secured upon a rock shaft 8S and provided with tube positioning notches 90. The segments are ar ranged at the lower delivery end of a hopper 92 within which the tubes to be treated are placed. The feed segments are oscillated to take a tube from the lower end of the hopper and present it in position to be entered b v the mandrel durii'ig the forward stroke of the turret slide. The segments are thus oscillated by a cam on the cam shaft arranged to engage one end of a lever 94, the other end of which is connected b'v a link 96 with a three arm lever 96 which, in turn. is connected by a link 100 with an arm 102 on the segment shaft 88. The lever 98 is also connected by a link 104 with a tube agitator 106 arranged to act on the tubes within the hopper. The rear end of the hopper is provided with a projection 166 which lies back of the end of the tnbe when in position to receive the mandrel and holds the tube against endwise n'ioveinent as the mandrel is pushed forward through it. a

Each mandrel is provided with a sleeve 112 for engaging' the inner end of the tube and preventing its endwise movement on the mandrel as the forward end of'the tube is thrust into the die. This sleeve is mounted on the mandrel so that it mav have a limited endwise movement thereon to permit the mandrel to carr)7 the rear end of the tube through the die. As shown. the sleeve is connected with the mandrel bv a pin 114 passing` through a Slot 116 in the mandrel. The forward end of the slot is provided with an off-set 118 into which the pin ma); be turned to lock the sleeve in position. lVhen the n'iandrel has received a tube and been brought into alinement with the die. as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the sleeve 112 is locked in forward position on the mandrol bv engagement of the pin 114 with the olf-set 118. As the rear end of the tube approaches the die, the outwardh7 projectformed in the projection the end of the mandrel may ing end of the pin rides up an inclined cam 120 which rocks the sleeve and swings the pin out of the off-set and then further forward movement of the sleeve is arrested by the engagement of the pin with a shoulder 122 at the end of the cam incline, as shown in 5. During the continued and final forward niovementof the mandrel, the rear end of the tube is carried through the die and the sleeve moved back on the mandrel bringing the pin near the rear end of the slot 116. as indicated in 6. TWhen this mandrel is moved into tube receiving position and is advanced through the tube held by the feed segn'ients7 the projecting end of the pin 114 rides over the end of a spring supported latch 124 and passes in front of a shoulder 126 on the latch. as indicated in F 3. lVhen the mandrel starts back, the sleeve 112 is held from movement by the engagement of the pin with the shoulder on the latch and the sleeve moves forward ou the mandrel until it reaches the forward end of the slot 11.6 when its projecting end rides over the shoulder 126, thus rocking the sleeve and bringing the pin into the olfset 116 to lock the sleeve in position against the rear end of the tube.
The turret is indexed to shift the tube mandrels successiveh7 from tube receiving position to position in alinement with the die by an indexing shaft 12S provicnd ou its forward end with a socket arranged to receive the squared rear end 132 of the turret shaft. The squared end of the turret shaft enters the socket during the latter part of the retracting movement of the turret slide and continues in the socket until the end of a mandrel has entered or is about to enter the die. The indexing shaft is oscillated in the proper manner and at proper intervals through a segment 134 which engages a. pinion 136 on the outer end of the index shaft. The segment is oscillated through a cam 138 secured on the cam shaft 56 and engaging a roll 140 on the segment.

Yilhile the machine shown a d described embodies a simple and etiicient term of the invention, it vvill be understood that the specific construction and arrangement ot parts shown and describedis not essential to the broader features ot the invention and may be varied or modified as found desirable or best suited to the condition under which the invention is to be utilized.
iVhat is claimed is:
1. A machine 'tor sizing or polishing tubes having', in combination, a revolving die, a tube carrying mandrel, a reciproca-ting' carriage on which the mandrel is mounted. and an indexing mechanism tor bi'iiigfiiri the inte position to receive a tube and into position in alincment with the die, said mechanism having,n provisien tor operative connection .vith the carriage when the mandrel is disengaged trom the die and being adapted to be disconnected therefrom when the mandrel enters the die.
2.
