Application filed April 1, 192 6. Serial No 99,099:
The invention relates to instruments adapted for use upon aerial, submarine or land vehicles to which the craft or vehicle is standing at any desired time, and-it is the object of such invention to provide a device of this character which is of simple and inexpensive construction, yet is highly eflicient and desirable and can by no possibility get out of order unless .seriously injured by some accident.
Vith the foregoing in view, the invention .resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and'claime-d, the description being supplemented by the drawing.
Figure 1 is an elevation "of an inclinometer constructed in accordance with my invention, showing it mounted upon a vertical support,
such as an instrument board. a
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device mounted upon the support.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the inclinometer, showing the support in horizontal section.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View on line 4:4 of Fig. 1.
-Figure 5 is a view similar to Ft 4 but showing the support disposed at an inclined position instead of vertically as in the other views. p
In the drawing above numeral 6 designates a face plate adapted to' be secured by screws or the like 7 to an 'instrumentboard or other support 8, said faceplate having a forwardly bowed-portion 9 shaped to correspond toa section of a cylinder, this bowed portion being formed with a view opening 10. across which an indicator 11 is secured. This indicator may well be formed from a length of wire having its end soldered or otherwise secured in place.
briefly described, the
19, the periphery of this wheel being disposed at. the rear face of the forwardly bowed plate portion 9,-so as to be readily vis- 1ble through the opening 10. The wheel is provlded with a weight 20 which is preferably located within it as shown, said weight being spaced from the shaft 15 and secured suitably to the wheel, so that said wheel will be held against rotation, regardless of the angle.
to which the face plate 6 and the support 8 turn with respect to said wheel. The periphery of this wheel is divided into degrees and its graduations are read in connection with the indicator 11, so that by merely glancing at t h1s indicator and the degree designation .behind it, the inclination of the airship, submarine, land vehicle orthe like with respect to the hor zontal, may readily be ascertained.
The device is of extreme simplicity and can by no possibility get out of operative condition unless accidentally injured, and
it will be efficient and in every way desirable.
On account of the excellent results obtainable from the details disclosed, they are b preference followed. It will be understood: however, that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor variations may be made. I
I claim: An inclinometer comprising a face plate having a forwardly bowed portion shaped to correspond to a section of a cylinder'and formed with a view opening, an indicator spanning sa'id'opening, a yoke of substantially u-shaped form disposed behind said face plate and having its ends bent laterally and secured to saidface plate, said yoke bemg dlsposed in a plane at right an les to the plane of said face plate and havlng in its arms bearing openings, a-w-heel dis 'osed between the arms of said yoke and havlng a shaft the endsof which engage and project through thebearing openings in the arms of the'yoke, collars hired on the projecting ends of said shaft, said wheel having its peripheral portion disposed at and close to the rear side of the forwardly bowed portion of said face plate, said peripheral portion of the wheel being provided with degree designations, and a weight arranged eccentrically on said wheel.
" In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
' CASSIUS COLLINS.
