ICE PICK.
Application filed December 14,v 1925. Serial No. 75,428.
The object of this invention is to provide a safety ice pick, in which the pointed element shall be slidable into the handle portion, said handle portion being provided with a blade or the like permanently affixed thereto, and constituting an ice chipping device.
A further object isrto provide particular means for retaining the pointed element in either operative or inoperative position.
I A further object is to provide a device which shall-include. a handle having a longi# tudinal bore and a ferrule with an ice chip ping element formed integrally therewith, the ferrule being applied to the handle in the usual rmanner, and the chipping blade being offset to permit of the mounting of the pointed element centrally of the handleV and within the longitudinal bore thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this ap plication,
Figure 1 shows the device in'elevation,
i when in operative position.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section.`
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the awllike element constituting the working portion of the pick. t
Figure 4 is a detail view showing the awllike element in its retracted position.
rIhe handle 10 may have an enlargement 11 at the upper end thereof, and said handle is provided with a longitudinal or vertical bore 12 extending for nearly the full length.
A ferrule 13 is mounted on a reduced'portion14 at the end of the handle, and formed integrally withthe ferrule 13 is an ice chippingelement, including a shankV 15 and a blade 16, the latter having a. working edge,
such as that-shown at 17. Y,
The handle 10 is also formed with a longiltudinal s lot 18 having communication with thegbore 12 and having an offset end 19, and
another offset end 20, it being notedthat the slot is continued through the ferrule and 'that the offset endfof the slot in the lhandle registers with a similar offset slot 22v movable in the offsetpor'tions 19, 2O and 22,-
the upper end 26 of the element 24 being of substantially the .same cross/section as the bore 12, and the awl-like memberbeing slid# able within the bore, and being adapted to be Secured in operative position as shown in Figure 1, or-to be Vwithdrawn into 'the bore, so that it will be inoperative for use as an ice-pick, but the chipping blade 17 may then be employed.
An important feature of the construction is that the element 24 is so proportioned, and Y the engaging device 27 isso placed with reference to the offset ends 19 and 20 of the slot 18, that the sharp end 25 of element 24 will be opposite the middle portion of'blade 16, or approximately in thatpositiomso that element 16 acts as a guard, preventing in! jury by the pointed .end of element 24.
Having thus described the inventionwhat is claimed as new is: l Y 1. A device of the class described, comprising a handle having a longitudinal bore and having a longitudinal slot communicating with the bore, a .tool slidable within the bore, and a shield member offset from the end of the handle and extending longitudinally thereof and over the' free end ofthe retractive movement in the bore.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a handle having a longitudinal bore, a
blade connected with one end of the handle,`.
the lbore being open at the corresponding end of the handle, a toolV slidable in thebore. and movable alongside of the blade, and beyond the cutting edge thereof, the handle l l' A and blade maintaining a'fixed rela-tion, and
means for retaining the slidable vtool in an tool when the latter has'reached its limit of inga handle having a longitudinal bore, ay
ferrule carried by the handle, a. blade i carried by the ferrule and projecting from the` handle in offset relation to the bore, la tool slidable in the kbore and alongside of the blade, mea ns for retaining the tool in retract# ed position lwithin the handle, or in a position lprojecting from the end thereof, alongside of the blade, the blade acting as a guard for the tool in its retracted position. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
