Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEc FRANCIS STEFFANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
lMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-CASES.
Sprciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,321, dated April 20, 1875; application filed January 11, 1875.
of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Cases for Stem-Winding \'Vatches, which are simple in construction and use, and save nearly oue-half the gold or valuable material in the cap, and at the saine time render the cap more attractive; and it consists in cutting out the central portion of the cap, and providing the same with a iian ged ring iitted therein, and a bezel, by which means either one or two pictures may be placed-iftwo, one facing out and one in 5 or a glass may be used, if desired, all as hereinafter more fully set forth; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear and exact description ot' the same, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it al'ipertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, with letters oi' reference marked thereon, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure l is a View of a Watch-case from the back, with the back and Acap partially open, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is au out side view ot the cap with pictures removed, and Fig. Sis an inside view ot' the cap with the pictures inserted.
A represents the central rim, and B the back, of a watch of the usual form, and a is the cap, of the usual stemwindiiig watch to which my improvement is applied. This cap a is attached in the usual manner, and from the center is cut out a large piece, of circular or oval form, around the edges of which is fitted and pressedaring, c, having an inwardlyprojecting portion and vertically-extending part, as shown in Fig. 2, and spun down on the inside of the cap, as shown in Fig. 3. On the outside of the cap, and over the vertical part of the ring, is 'litted a bezel, e, as shown in Fig. l.
y this invention a large quantity ot' valuable material is saved from the cap, and at the same time the cap is rendered more attractive, as a likeness or picture can be placed in the cap, looking outward or looking inward, or two pictures may be used, if desired, and can readily be put in, taken out, or changed, by any one having the watch.
I am aware that a separate cap has been used for pictures in watches, and also that the cap ot' key-winding watches has been out out and another pieceinserted with keyholes 3 andi do not, therefore, lay any claim to such devices, as they do notin any manner embody my invention, which is to save a part of the valuable material oi" the cap in stem-winding watches, and at the same time make the cap more attractive and desirable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In stein-winding watches, the cap a., cut out in the center as described, and provided with the ring c, having an inward and upward eX- tension on the inside ot' the cap, in combination with the bezel c, whereby material is saved, and the recess formed for the insertion of one or two pictures, all as and for the pur-
