HARROW.
Application; filed Junev 24,
This invention has reference to an improved harrow, and; it has for its primary object to' provide a structure of this kind. wherein the harrowis composed, of foldable sections capable of, occupying, a comparatively small space. when, not in, use,;or being folded. into a comparatively small. 'condi tion when drawn through gateways and the like, and which may be adjusted to extend over a relatively wide. area. of; ground,
I am well. aware of. the fact that a sectional 21-]1Clf foldable harrow for this purpose is broadly old, but I believe that the structure which I employ is an improvement upon anything of this kind that has been patented or used up to the present time, this statement being made after an extensive search to familiarize myself with the general state of the art to which the invention relates.
The primary feature of construction of the improved harrow is the special hinge employed between the main central section and the end-sections, which allows these to be folded either to extend in a plane with the main section, below. it, or above it, whereby to accommodate the irregularity in the surface traversed.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an improved harrow constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the details of construction more plainly, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the parts of the improved hinge.
Referring to the drawings in detail, will be seen that the reference character 1 designates the main section, which is of somewhat customary design, the same being provided with I-bolts 2, with which rods 3 of the draft appliance are connected at their outer ends. At their inner ends, these rods are connected with an attaching eye 4 and an additional brace and equalizing member 5 is attached to the center of the main harrow 1 and at its outer end to the ring 4.
As before stated, the feature of novelty in this case is the improved hinge which is 1926. Serial K0. 113,374;-
composed of complemental parts 6 and. 7 respectively. As thehinge is the same at both ends; of the main harrow member 1, a description. ofone hinge construction will suflice fQlijbQtll. Referring. first to Figure 3, it will be seen. that the parts herereprerented; are of. channel-shaped cross section, the. same. comprisingv spaced. parallel walls 8' and a central connecting. web or, wallfQ. The walls 8 terminate in. apertiired'. ears" 1 0 and the central web" 9- isv provided with. an
extension 11 terminating in a pintle bearing.
12. The complemental part is also of channeled cross section and embodies side walls 13 and central walls 14. Then, too, as shown in Figure 1 it is provided with a pair of spaced bearings 15, for passage of the hinge pintle 16. In this connection, it will be noted that the parts 11 and 12 are disposed between the bearings 15 and the hinge pintle passes between these and also through the apertured ears 10, thus providing a hinge connection which allows swinging of the end sect-ions 17 in a vertical plane about a horizontal axis. This type of a connection, however, prevents relative side movement of the sections 1 and 17. Both of the parts 6 and 7 are secured to their respective harrow sections by connecting bolts 18.
If desired, flexible connections 19 may be connected with the intermediate portion of the draft bars 3 and with the central portions of the end sections 17 of the harrow.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that either one or both of the end sections '17 may be arranged in the same plane with the main central section 1 to. increase the width of the harrow in order that it may cover a greater areaof ground than would be the case where a single harrow bar is employed. The advantage of the structure, however, is that the central section 1 may be drawn over a comparatively flat portion of ground, the section 17 may incline upwardly on a slight hill, while the outer end section may swing to assume a downward inclination for a sloping portion of ground. The end sections, however, at all times maintain longitudinal alignment with the central section 1. The downward swinging is, of course, limited. Attention is further directed to the fact that the load is exerted upon the central section of the harrow, thus removing undue strain from the two end sections. However, the pull is distributed to the end sections through the flexible chains 19, and thereis no unusual tendency to break the hinge connection. Moreover, these flexible chains do not interfere with the upward or downward swinging movement of the end sections, and in fact allow the sections to be folded up on top of the central section so that a relative- 1y narrow harrow is provided, thus permitting it to be drawn through gateways or to permit it to be arranged in compact bundles for storage. Other advantages and features accompany this structure and will he evident to those familiar with structures of this kind. However, it is thought unnecessary to go into detail about these, since it is the structural details that are relied upon for p atentability. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
Minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim:
In a harrow structure of the class described, a main harrow section and relatively movable end sections, and a hinge structure between the adjacent ends of said sections, said hinge structure embodying a pair of complemental parts, each of which is of channel-shaped cross section and is fastened to the complemental end of said sections, one of said parts being provided with a pair of spaced projecting pintle receiving bearings, and the other part being provided with a centrally disposed single projecting pintle receiving bearing disposed between the first named bearings, together with apertured ears located on the outer sides of the first named pair of bearings, and a pintle connecting pin passing through said bearings and apertures in said cars.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
